JoeWolf1Although Melvin Ejim lead the Big 12 in rebounding as a Junior, and has had a relatively prolific NCAA career, he was not really on my NBA radar going into his senior season in Iowa State. Mainly because he was playing the role of a 6’6” power forward for the Cyclones last season, and although he had become and improved shooter, I was unconvinced he could do much on the perimeter outside of hitting a wide open three pointer.
This season, I’ve seen a completely new version of Ejim as he has done major work on his ball handling and shot and with the arrival of Dustin Houge, has shifted a lot of his game to the perimeter. Melvin has always been a top flight athlete with a great first step, and leaping ability, but now that he’s showcasing increased ball handling, and shooting 37% from long range on double his attemtps from last year I’m starting to consider him as a 3 and D style defensive wing option in the 2nd round.
Ejim is a very athletic 6’6” 220 lbs with a seemingly above average wingspan, he’s expanded his range and is a reliable outside shooter, and can drive to the hoop better with his increased ball handling. He’s extremely productive averaging 18 ppg 8.8 rpg 2.4 apg and efficient doing this on 51% 37% and 86% clips.
I’ve seen a decent sample size of him thus far this season, and I think he can fill a role in the NBA as that 3 and D style player. His athletic ability and size at the SF position are at an NBA level, but now that he’s not playing the 4 and has really worked on his perimeter game I’m seeing him in a new light, and with the 3 and D player becoming a specific role in the NBA, I think Ejim has a chance in the 40-60 range.

zolaParticipantI doubt he can find his place in NBA, but can he be new Kyle Hines in Europe?

JoeWolf1There are a lot of guys like Ejim in the NBA, who provide energy, without having a true position at the end of NBA benches.
Quincey Acy, Dray Green, Kent Bazemore come to mind off the bat, but they’re all kind of inbetween positions, but provide either a punch of energy, athleticism and defense off the bench, and I feel Ejim is a better shooter than all 3.
No, he’s not a sure fire prospect, and he may end up overseas, but I personally think he is a guy who has what it takes even if he doesn’t get drafted. Much like I thought Davies and Dellavedova could last year at this time. Ejim may not get drafted, but I think he can make a roster if the right team gives him a chance. If not, he’ll have a fine pro career somewhere, but I like what he can do.

JoeWolf148 points 18 rebounds 1 assist and 2 steals this afternoon on 20-24 shooting, 2-2 from downtown and 6-6 from the free throw line. Easily the best performance in the conference this season.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantI’m not saying he’ll ever be as good as Paul Milsap is today, but I wouldn’t be suprised to see him carve out a nice career in the league…
