Rdf1212ParticipantAnother thread brought up an excellent point I would like to hear everyone’s thoughts on.. Why is CP3 not held in a similar capacity to Melo? Melo has led more teams to the playoffs and been deeper in the playoffs than CP3 has without playing with near the same caliber of players.
I’m not saying CP3 is not a great player.. But he should be in viewed in a similar way to Melo.

Memphis MadnessParticipantBecause point guards don’t win?
Isiah was the top dog for the Pistons and won a Finals MVP trophy.
Other than him and the freakish, uber-talented Magic Johnson, point guard-led teams don’t win titles.
Wing players have done better. Guys like Bird, Jordan, Kobe, and LeBron each have at least 2 Finals MVP trophies.
Then, big men have dominated the title chase. Russell, Kareem, Wilt, Shaq, and Tim Duncan. Those five have combined for 28 titles.
Carmelo is a silky smooth scorer and a solid athlete who can also rebound at either the 3 or as a small ball four.
Maybe we expect more out of a guy like Carmelo. He won a college championship as a freshman. How many guys can score like him?

tuck243ParticipantTony Parker is a PG that won… Clyde Frazier… Jerry West… The list goes on.. The fact is some of the players you named didn’t win by themselves… Russell had some the most stacked teams of all time… Magic had Kareem and Kareem had Magic and Oscar Robertson… Wilt didn’t win until he played with Jerry West… Shaq couldn’t win until he had key players and a Superstar in Kobe… Jordan couldn’t get out the first round without Pippen… LeBron went to Miami with 2 other superstars to win his…
The fact is Superstars are Superstars… For a player of Chris Paul’s stature and for someone who dictates so much of the game, he has fallen short in comparison to other players… He doesn’t catch any flack for the simple reason that he isn’t preceived to be a cancer to his team like Melo… People tend to look at Melo and the first thing they bring up is his past ways… No one here mentions that he NEVER missed the playoffs before last year? That he was actually playing MVP caliber basketball last year and even guarding the best player defensively?
So, its safe to say Melo, CP3, and Dwight Howard should all share the same bashing… *If you going to bash a player for not winning*

MorseWillParticipantPeople don’t view them the same way because while Melo is mainly a high Volume Shooter/Scorer, Chris Paul has not only Averaged 10 assists per game for his career but also led the NBA in steals for 6 seasons. He’s a two way player that also seems to be one of the best leaders in the league. Not knocking Melo as he’s great at what he does, just most people that know basketball realize CP3 brings more to his team and gets more respect for what he does and has done

Memphis MadnessParticipantFor guys that good, I think it is all about the titles. How much higher can you move up the food chain?
If Chris Paul gets a ring, I think he gets into that Isiah Thomas category as being one of the top point guards in NBA history not named Magic Johnson.
If Carmelo gets a ring, then it would be fair to say that a guy like Durant would be chasing Carmelo. Both incredible scorers while Carmelo would then have a college ring and an NBA ring. You could then say that Durant couldn’t pass Carmelo on the all-time list (definitively) until he won a title. Even though Durant already has an MVP trophy.
The kicker for both would be getting rings in top markets. Getting a ring in LA (albeit for the Clippers) would be big. Carmelo getting a title for the New York Knicks would be HUGE.
Right now, a regular season MVP trophy wouldn’t mean as much to each player’s legacy as an NBA title.

Skeating12345ParticipantDeron Williams, in his second year in the league, led the Jazz to the WCF in the 06-07 season. They lost to the eventual NBA Champs, the Spurs. Paul has not done that with a much more talented team.
