If Carmelo Anthony was on the trading block, here are some trades to get him on the Warriors’ roster. I know the Lakers and the Bulls both want him, but I think the Warriors have more assets to get him and they are a better fit for his skills.

While the Knicks may like the core package that the Warriors can offer, I think they would rather dump more of the salary to get under the luxury tax, get draft picks, and get a couple pieces from the Warriors.

The Warriors can absorb Felton’s contract with their trade excemption, but it is not big enough to absorb Chandler’s, Bargnani’s, or Stoudamire’s. For this reason, I think they Knicks want to pull another team into the trade to take one or two more contracts. The best third parties I have come up with are Pheonix and New Orleans. Here are two trades with Pheonix and one with NOLA.

    Trade One with Pheonix

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=nxaeksd

Golden State receives Carmelo Anthony, Ray Felton, Channing Frye

Golden State gives David Lee, Harrison Barnes, Nemanja Nedovic, 6.4 million trade excemption, 3.6 million trade excemption

Knicks receive Emeka Okafor, Markieff Morris, Harrison Barnes, Archie Goodwin, 3.6 million dollar trade excemption, 2014 1st round pick (from Washington, top 12 protected), 2015 1st round pick (from Lakers, top 5 protected)

Knicks give Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, Ray Felton

Pheonix receives Tyson Chandler, David Lee, Nemanja Nedovic, 6.4 million trade excemption

Pheonix gives Channing Frye, Markieff Morris, Archie Goodwin, Emeka Okafor, 2014 1st round draft pick (from ), 2015 1st round draft pick (from Lakers, 1-5 protected)

Why for Golden State? Any time you can get a top 10 player in the leage, you do it. Lee is very productive and Barnes has a good upside, but putting Anthony on this team with Curry, Igoudala, Thompson, and Bogut makes them actual contenders. Anthony can opt in for one more year and see how the team develops, or reup right away. The Warriors would get hit hard with taxes in the next few seasons, but they would have a contender.

Why for Knicks? If you have a sense that Melo is leaving, they can not only get a good return for him, but they can also get tax relief and restock their future draft picks. Of the trade options I will list, this one leans towards ‘rebuild’ instead of ‘reload,’ but they get immediate cap relief and two young prospects who could probably start right away and Archie Goodwin. The Wizards pick this year should be somewhere in the late teens or early twenties, but the Lakers pick next year could end up being in the lottery.

Why for Pheonix? Dragic and Bledsoe have willed this team into playoff contention. Lee is one of the most productive bigs in the NBA and Chandler compliment his weaknesses well. Both are great in the pick and roll, which is a great fit for Bledsoe and Dragic. Having both would push the Suns into the tax threshold, but depending on what they do with Chandler next year, they could get back under it. Nedovic is a really good prospect who is also from Dragic’s home country, Yugoslavia, which may help Nedovic’s development.

    Trade Two with Pheonix

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=n8z9369

Basically the same, except since Pheonix gives and gets less. Instead of Pheonix getting David Lee’s long-term contract for Markieff Morris and Archie Goodwin, New York gets David Lee and Pheonix keeps their two young prospects. New York doesn’t get as much cap relief here, but this is more of a ‘reload’ trade than a complete ‘rebuild’ trade.

    Trade with New Orleans

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=mtzblng

Golden State receives Carmelo Anthony, Ryan Anderson, Ray Felton, Iman Shumpert

Golden State gives David Lee, Harrison Barnes, Klay Thompson, 2018 conditional future 1st round pick

Knicks give Carmelo Anthony, Andrea Bargnani, Tyson Chandler, Ray Felton, Iman Shumpert

Knicks receive Eric Gordon, David Lee, Harrison Barnes, future draft picks (2018 and beyond) from both teams, tax relief

Pelicans give Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson, conditional future first round pick

Pelicans receive Tyson Chandler, Klay Thompson, Andrea Bargnani

Why for Golden State? The combination of Carmelo Anthony and Ryan Anderson at the forward positions would fit really well next to Iggy and Curry at guard. In this trade, the Warriors start Curry, Iggy, Melo, Anderson, and Bogut, but they still have Green, Speights, Felton, Shumphert, Crawford, and O’neil on the bench. That is a contender. In this trade they would have to get creative to avoid harsh tax penalties in a few years, but that is what it takes to win.

Why for Knicks? This is the ultimate reload option, but may not be a great one. Lee, Gordon, and Barnes could keep the Knicks in playoff contention while simultaneously getting them under the luxury tax by a few million. If they want, they could take Thompson (and Darius Miller) instead of Barnes, but since they already have Hardaway Jr., Barnes is a better fit. The Warriors could also throw in Nedovic to make this happen.

Why for NOLA? Tyson Chandler returns to NOLA and pairs up with Anthony Davis for a block party? They also get Thompson in this deal to stretch the floor and move Evans into a play-making role. If New York did want Thompson instead, NOLA would get Barnes, a natural small forward who would fit their roster well, too. In order to make this trade happen, they have to take Bargnani, but they stay under the tax threshold and Bargnani’s contract becomes a place-holder on their roster for Anthony Davis. They may not be true contenders, but they would be a very difficult team to matchup with.

Warriors get Melo, Shumpert, K. Martin

Suns get D. Lee, H. Barnes

Knicks get Okafor, K. Thompson, Morris Brothers, 30th, 22nd, from suns this year and suns 1st round (not from lakers)  next year or suns 18th this year and suns 1st round next year

Only thing is that why would Warriors want Melo.  Would be same scoring in my opinion from perimeter that Curry and Thompson share and wouldnt compliment Curry because Melo loves his points iso.  Defense would be subtracted too.  Biggest change from your trade is including Klay Thompson but you get Shumpert in return.  Might be too much but Melo is the best player out of the trade

I think if the Knicks want to trade away Melo, they will want to unload more salary to start the rebuild process. Other than that I think its a decent trade.

I believe this is a fair trade, however, with this trade they would basically break up a team that was 1 piece away of being a real force in the west (and It can be said that they already are), in order to get Melo and Shumpert?

I dont see it. I think they are not that far away from the OKC level to mess with their chimestry and roll the dice with a trade like this.

I’d prefer they trade stright up Lee or Barnes for the piece they need, or even Green for a heat check guy if that is what they think is missing (Perhaps to the Cavs to get Jack back in GS).
