Chilbert arenasParticipantESPN reporting that it’s official that Melo will opt out of his final year of his contract making him a free agent. In equally bad news for the Knicks Andrea Bargs opted in

UnbiasedObserverParticipantMelo could realistically end up in Chicago, Boston, Houston, or LA. I personally think those are the best places for him and he’s probably considering all four.

doubledribblerParticipantBoston? Why would he go there? To play with Olynyk and Sullinger? Might as well stay in NY and collect paychecks if he won’t be winning any time soon.
I think at the moment it is in this order: Chicago, Houston, NY, LA, Dallas. Problem is that Chicago and Houston have to clear space. Can they do it soon enough for him and what damage will be done once they do so? Dallas has money now and just took Spurs to a 7 game series so pretty good roster wise…LA is not in great shape at the moment, but he could step in and eventually be the face of that team and also an ideal place for wife’s career, but I don’t think the Lakers want to tie up someone else in a long term deal yet. He can stay in NY because he likes it and all that money.

Nick YoungParticipantThat’s some tough luck for the Knicks. Well, they missed the playoffs, so at least they’ll have a lottery pick in a strong draft. Oh wait…
Jokes aside, I believe the Knicks should just take the one year of awfulness that next season will be. After that they’ll have an actual pick, and a lot more cap room. I’m pretty sure Bargnani’s contract will be over by then, so they can use the whole ‘biggest media market NA’ thing in a loaded free agency.

tblazer_NZParticipantThe Knicks are now at the same place as the Lakers were last year with Dwight if Carmelo does leave. Their contracts will be up and they will have a 1st rounder. Only difference is the contracts of Kobe and Nash.

HitsterParticipantMelo wants to look at FA options but you do wonder what Phil Jackson’s thinking is, might he be looking at a Knicks team that may not include Melo or at worse he doesn’t give Melo the 5 year max deal that he may want to stay in NY.
I would not rule Melo out of remaining in NY but I think any deal has to include a year 3 player option so Melo has a possible route out and the Knicks can still get trade value for him if they move him to an acceptable team he’d opt in at.

BallinmvpParticipantI think he is going to the bulls, it just seems like a forgone conclusion.

bkb77ParticipantThought he should have Opted In. Here’s why, it would have been just 1 year and he was Guarenteed 23m. After next year he would haven been a FA in a loaded FA Class with The Knicks,Clippers,Rockets,Celtic,Lakers, all having good amount of cap room. He would have made more Cash and possible chosen to team up with another Star player next year.
This Makes me think what are his options? Does he re up in NY, does he get pulled to the dark side to the heat for much less money, do the Clippers or Rockets free up cap space and sign and trade for him? Going to be very interesting to see what he chooses to do.

tblazer_NZParticipantIf he had opted in and got injured (bad injury) he would have risked tens of millions.

CavFanPRParticipantCleveland should trade the #1 straight up for Kevin Love and try to lure Carmelo with Love and Irving on the roster. We would have our own big three!

nill650ParticipantWHY WOULD LOVE WANT TO PLAY IN CLEVELAND? He wouldnt imo.
love for a one year rental is not as good as wiggins will become longterm ,so its a no brainer to keep the pick and draft the most marketable prospect since lebron james.
If cleveland trades this pick they better trade it to philly for the 3 and the 10 and walk away from this draft with joel embiid and fringe all star / solid starter at 10.
