Mr. HookShotParticipantAccording to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein, the Spurs will ship a second-round pick to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for floor general Ray McCallum. NBA.com’s David Aldridge confirmed the report.
I don’t really like what the Kings are getting in return, but I like this pick-up for the Spurs. In an earlier post I stated they needed to find a third, young PG who Popovich can mold into the next Cory Joseph and McCallum has all the qualities needed for that. Although some say he is strictly an shoot-first PG, I really like his passing game as well and Pop will definitely develop that. On top of that, he is a solid 6’2/6’3 PG who could become a strong defender as well.
The only thing the Spurs need to pick up now is a shooting wing and a third-string big man (maybe Lallane?) to give them a solid team top to bottom.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantI really think this will help McCallum reach his potential as a back up PG, maybe a Kevin Ollie or even a Eric Snow type career. This is a likely scenario given the Spurs stellar history of developing players. The rich get richer.

BasketBalAllanParticipantI would have thought a second rounder would not have been enough to grab him but I guess not.
Obviously this is great for Ray, probably the best franchise for young promising players to develop while also being on a highly competitive championship caliber team.
This makes me wonder if the rumors of the Kings trying to sign another FA are true. Depending on how the deals they are giving turn out they could now have as much as 5 million in cap space. Though I’m not really sure they need another player at this point.

TrillaParticipantThe kid can play, great get for the spurs. Could develop into a good rotation player for them in time, given Joseph’s departure and patty mills injuries and such
