I know there is already a Mayo thread but read this…

“Stephen Jackson was backing me down and hitting jump shots,” Mayo said. “For the first time in my entire life I had to sit down at the end of a game because I couldn’t guard my man. From that day on, I was like, ‘I have to get better at ball handling and being a lead guard.”

Or, you could get better at defending.

    Silly Mayo…

Anyway, he would still be a shooting guard. He would just get a few extra minutes as the back-up point.

Silly Mayo!!! Love it … That comment is the mark of a non-winner. Here is how the winner would respond …

    (Not an actual quote!)

“Yeah … that guy ate my lunch tonight! Not going to happen again, because I am going to D up every guard teams throw at me from now on … At the same time, it made me realize what I could do as a point guard. To be a good point guard, I’ll have to tighten up my handling, and become a much better facilitator … I want to go out there and light other point guards up like Jax did to me. At the same time, next time I play Jax, I am asking coach to throw me on him, and I’ll shut him down!”

The Pharcyde said it best back in the day, “you can’t keep running away …”

As per the previous thread and those asking if he can be a #1 on a good team, and what it will take… D-up and do what ever it takes to win. Would Kobe say something like that? He would not say a thing, he’d just go out and drop 81 on the Raptors … Sad day in Canada.

If Mayo does go to PG they have 2 options for their backcourt

    PG- Mayo
    SG- Brewer
    SF- George

    PG- Mayo
    SG- Bradley
    SF- Brewer

1st one they go big at the 3 guard spots with Z and Baby Gasol down low and play a power game

2nd they allow Mayo to control the rock and have he and AB switch on D Mayo can defend certain 2 guards Capt. Jack is 6’8″ Mayo is 6’4″ thats a major difference but the average height for a 2 guard is 6’5″ so OJ wont have trouble. Bradley will give opposing PG’s fits on D very fast athletic and ball hungry I like a Mayo/Bradley backcourt with Gasol upfront=NICE

Lol silly rabbits! Mayo is a pretty good defender when guarding players his size, a 6’4 guard will never be able to guard captain Jack! That’s a mismatch anyday of the week, please name me 1 6’4 guard that could stop Jack……….

Yeah, Mayo is actually a good defender. He definitely can defend PG and most SG’s, but Stephen Jackson is a physically gifted SG who is taller and bigger than Mayo is. I think Mayo is better at SG, but I think he should see minutes at PG too. He’s not a true PG and doesn’t have great floor vision, but he can play some point definitely

D-Wade has like a 6’11 wingspan lol. Mayo doesn’t have that kind of length.

imma grizz fan and watch every game i can catch Leauge Pass… But moving mayo to point makes a lot of sense.. he is not any where as selfish as people make him to be this yr he sacrificed the most of anybody on the team .. he played a very team pass first game this yr thats why his %fg went up to 46%… he doesnt get a lot of assist because he doesn’t dominate the ball here in Memphis like roy or evans or joe johnson and he still managed over 3 a game while mostly standing in the corner and watching conley do his best rondo impersonation to the tune of 5apg.. mayo can score and defend with the elite pgs right now if he tightens up his handles we will see y he was ranked over rose he has that type of offensive firepower.. he would easily be the the biggest and one of the athletic pgs outside of the freaks wall n rose….with a jumper that paul williams rose wall could only dream of….

Mayo has average strength and isn’t long at all. He puts good pressure on the ball and competes, but he struggles defending against bigger/longer two guards that can take him into the post or shoot over the top of him.

    He defends point guards better.

I understand wanting/needing the versatility of Mayo to play and guard multiple positions. I think its better for the team for Mayo to become a better defender rather than become something he’s not, a point guard. This guy is a shoot first type of player. He HAS NEVER had the mentality of setting up his teammates and facilitating and offense. In Conley you have a guy who would rather make a good pass than score. Conley has improved by leaps and bounds since his rookie year. As long as he continues to improve the Grizz should improve.

The Grizz need to work on strengthening their bench and their team defense and not worry about putting Mayo at the point. He just doesn’t have the mental make up to be even an average point guard.

Here’s a link to an interview with Conley.

Mayo came into the league with a reputation of being a solid defensive player, but that being said I think he would be better in a backcourt with a taller point guard or making that switch to PG himself. Obviously Conley is not the answer at PG, and Rudy Gay will probably take an offer somewhere that Memphis will not match.

So it would be good to have Mayo being a hybrid PG/SG, draft a big wing who can be a spot up shooter as well as create for others (hello Gordon Hayward), because that is not one of Mayo’s strong points.

    PG Mayo
    SG Hayward
    SF Gay(??)
    PF Randolph (??)
    C Gasol

This would create a much more balanced roster, and would give the Grizz a size advantage at every position on most nights.

id love to see oj playing the point guard position. i was 1 of the people who thought oj should have been playing point when he 1st entered the league. I remember at the tim ethere was talk about whethe rhe woul dgo #2 to miami and play alongside wade which i thought would have been brillaint. but it never happened.

Hayward doesn’t even play SG that lineup would make no sense, I like Hd the Kid’s roster, you have versatile lineups and can be very effective, plus drafting George would be a win win situation, if Rudy stays, George can come off the bench and score and if Rudy leaves he provides them with a solid starter. I really like Mayo actually, he can actually be a Billups type PG if he wants to make the full switch, obviously he needs a lot of improvement, but he if he makes those changes to his game whose to say he won’t be their starting PG a few years down the line?
