He doesn’t fit into any role he’s kind of just there does avg some points(9) and rebound(4) but doesn’t do much. he wasn’t worth the 2nd pick in 05 draft and Hawks should have drafted there biggest need at the time pg in Chris Paul or D-Will. Maybe they trade him this season. I wander what they can get for him?

He’s a solid all-around player to me. I think he can be a 14 or 15 ppg scorer in the right role. He doesn’t have a clearly defined role with the Hawks, which leads to some inconsistent play, but he can do a bit of everything. He’s got a nice shot, especially from 15-20 ft, and he passes, defends, handles the ball, and rebounds alright. His fundamentals and smarts are also great. He also can be a mismatch combo forward, especially against PF’s. He’s at his best as a spot-up shooter/floor spacer for the Hawks, and he also is a strong transition player.

The only role I can say Williams has is as a floor spacer and transition scorer for the Hawks (I think he can be more though). He also draws the defensive assignments against big SF’s like Paul Pierce, Lebron etc.

One thing he IS doing right now…

He’s keeping the Hawks in the game right now against arguably the best team in the east.

I think Marvin Williams is better than his carreer suggest.  He just happened to go to a team that had and still has tons of swingman.  he is more of 3 but with Josh Smith, and Joe Johnson, and also Hoford playing out of position at Center.  Sometime Williams is a 3 or 4 and even then he is not really top 3 option for this team.  he is more a 4 or 5 option.  I think a trade would be very benificial to him.

Williams was a bad fit from the beginning they had virtually no need to draft him and should of drafted Williams everybody knew this even the casual basketball fan thought Paul would of been the better pick.

But is of no need to the Hawks except for the fact the Hawks switch a lot on defense and Johnson, Williams, and Smith are all interchangeable.  I always wanted to see him go to the Warriors, or this year the Cavs, Wizards, and Blazers I think would all be great situation for Williams to put his all around game on display.  He is sort of like a Rudy Gay who plays with the unassertiveness of Lamar Odom.

I still think he could average anywhere from 14 to 18 for a team if they needed him too.  He is long athletic and can really shoot plus has an amazing feel for the game.

I am starting to get the same feel with Turner on the Sixers that if they don;t make personel adjustments he will never meet his potential yet if they keep winning they will be afraid to make any big changes.

He needs to go to Cleveland or a place where he can get every shot and the offense is focused around him. Give him one year of that see what he is made of. For not doing much he is talked about alot, give him the opportunity to see what he gets. Same thing happened with Blatche in DC last year. All of the injuries he stepped up and was forced to be the man. Now he is able to do that while the team contiunes to rebuild. He has potential, just look what happened in boston, only guy who stepped up. It may be because Boston wasnt focused on him cause he never does anything but he put up numbers.

Marvin started at SG last night and ESPN noted that he was just too big for Ray Allen to defend but when Johnson comes back surely he has to return to SG unless he could be effective at SF with Marvin at SG.

Marvin developed gradually over his first 3 seasons but then his stats went backwards. From the games of his I’ve seen on TV in recent years it seems that he gives a team more than his pure stats show maybe a bit like Tayshaun Prince or even Shane Battier. He has a good all round game but not one part is outstanding perhaps sums him up best. He’d be a great option on a real contenders team as a player who could play around the franchise guys or perhaps achange of scenery where he’d be more of a shot option.

Perhaps a change of scenery would do him good, the Bobcats are looking at deals and Marvin could prove to be the sort of younger option they would consider or even Portland if they decided to try and freshen up their roster. Both Coach Brown and Coach MacMillan would love Williams’s all round solid game and his good defensive play.

Cleveland would be an ideal move for him as Hickson isn’t ready to be a major force and Jamieson is at the veteran stage and might be the sort of player that Cleveland would love to move due to his salary.

Williams came off the bench in college and his team won the national title. I kept hearing people say he should have been the #1 pick because he had superstar potential though I never really bought the hype. The Hawks had a need at point guard and were loaded with swingmen. The Hawks would have been much better off with Paul or Williams (and arguably Felton) than with Bibby running the point.

Williams tho was like the first of the mega talented and impossible long combo forwards that eventually gave us Durant and soon Perry Jones… Yes, Jon Bender came before him and flopped hard tho.  But Williams was a big deal in high school very similar to Harrison Barnes and was viewed as the number one pick going into that draft year because of his length and versatility and the fact that he had unteachable attributes in length and athleticism to compliment his amazing feel for the game.  And Williams did nothing during UNC’s title run to hurt his draft stock despite not showing the ability to take over games he proved he could be a valuable cog on a championship team.

I thought that if Williams was gonna go top 2 he should of went one to the Bucks where he would of been able to develop more and would of played a bigger role and like I said before Atlanta coming off a year where Josh Childress and Josh Smith had great rookie years and with the trade of Joe Johnson pending they had no need at all for Williams.  But 6’9 forwards with 7’4 wingspans and 37 inch verts who were also fast and fluid with a great feel for the game weren’t as common back then as they are now with Thad Youngs, Jeff Greens, Wilson Chandlers, Galineri’s so on coming out of nowhere.  These players have the ability to player either forward spot effectively and even shooting guard.

Had Marvin Williams had more success earlier maybe Durant had a better shot of going number one.  But Williams is by no means a future number one option waiting to break out.  He could be a very solid number two option but more realistically he is a great 3rd option on a contending team.

I could never see how a guy who could not crack a college starting 5 could go so high in the draft. UNC had a great team that year and won the title but if Williams had been seen as someone who would be NBA ready then he may have declared out of High School or at least been good enough to be an NCAA regular.

Since his stats fell back he has become a better all round player but Number 2 was just too high to draft him at. If he had been in the 5 to 8 range then most people would have said he’s become a very solid complimentary starter so he has probably achieved almost what was expected of him.

There have been numerous draft busts and I’d never class Marvin as one of those, he’s a good NBA player but just hasn’t reached the upside that people hoped he would. He earned a nice 2nd contract and will surely get decent contracts beyond that but will just never be a superstar.
