Lotto StudParticipantWhat is Marvin Williams ROLE as a player for Atlanta?

I May Be WrongParticipantI thought he would have been traded by last year. I have NO IDEA what he does for the Hawks (not an average shooter, modest defender, tall enough for the 3 but short for the 4 spot) … with that being said, I think if he got 35 minutes a night as a starter on another team and played along a good distributor, I could STILL see him putting up 16-18 and 7 rebounds (kind of like an athletic Luol Deng)

SwatLakeCityParticipantThat’s what I think every time I watch him. Luol Deng fits him perfectly. Although I still don’t why he was drafted so high. With what he has done so far, yes he should have been drafted in the lottery but not with the 2nd pick. Maybe the 10th but not #2, ahead of Dwill and CP3.

ghettosermonParticipantMarvin is bleh. He’ll have an 18 point burst here or there but he is the definition of mediocre. Decent defender, decent ballhandler, pretty good mid range shooter, but no 3 point range, can’t finish at the rim, and is an ok rebounder. He also isn’t nearly as athletic as you might have thought coming out of UNC. All in all a Deng comparison is not really on line, he’s a decent starter but can easily be upgraded if ever given a chance. Should definitely be making the MLE or a little bit less instead of that abortion of a contract he got. BTW he struggles with quick wings all the time, his footspeed is pretty bad.

Meditated StatesParticipantHe would look better with a PG who’s main focus is distributing. His strengths are not shown much with that teams style of play. With that being said he is no where near as good as he was hyped. Has never lived up to the hype and won’t.

cabbycabParticipantI remember the Buck’s GM contemplated on taking Williams with the 1st pick ( they ultimately chose Bogut ). I recall thinking how dumb it was even to consider that choice. Williams did not show any signs of being a bonafide superstar in his one year at UNC. With five NBA years under his belt, he has pretty much shown his true worth. To me he is a poor man’s Al Harrington.

HitsterParticipantWilliams has a very good all round game but not one part of it is outstanding, he’s a good role player perhaps in a similar mould to someone like Prince or Battier but he has never been a star that his draft position promised. He was 6th man during his year in the NCAA so was purely drafted on potential, he has had a very solid NBA career but in hindsight should probably have been in the 5 to 10 draft range.

PureshooterParticipantYeah, I’d side with the poor man’s Al Harrington comparison. He was dubbed a freak athlete coming out of high school, and while he’ll have a nice dunk here or there, he just really hasn’t developed much. I did notice last night that he looks much stronger, but it hasn’t resulted in consistency.
