Marvin has gone under the radar this season. A second overall pick, he was seen as somewhat of a disappointment for most of his time in Atlanta (especially since Deron Williams and CP3 were the two picks after him)

Playing for playoff bound Charlotte he has posted 11-7 with great efficiency 45-40-87%. Overrated Harrison Barnes, who some of us compared him to Williams is putting up 11-5 with 46-37-75%

Marvin Williams will be 30 in a few months, great to see the vets still improving their games….

Zach Lowe wrote a very becoming piece on him a few weeks ago. Said he’s been incredibly good. I haven’t watched Charlotte play much this year but he’s been what Channing Frye was supposed to be for Orlando.

Loved him when he was on the Jazz… Wish we still had him.

Hard to believe Marvin has been in the league for a decade now.  His time with Atlanta was obviously dissappointing but I’m glad Marvin has put in the work on his game and is now contributing for a playoff team.  Good for him.

Marvin is a very interesting case drafted on upside – he was the 6th man on a powerhouse Tar Heels team under Roy Williams. I think Atlanta had come off something like a 13-69 season and got 2nd pick so they took what they thought was BPA despite already having Josh Smith and Josh Childress in situ who played similar roles.

What Atlanta could have done with D-Will or CP3 alongside Joe Johnson and a prime Josh Smith we’ll never know but the flipside is they may not have ended up getting Al Horford at 2007 draft so the overall success of the Hawks without Marvin is debateable.

Marvin started to develop steadily in the NBA but his progression statistically began to fall off whilst some people said his overall game was improving. He got a decent 2nd contract from Atlanta and was eventually flipped to Utah where he was seen as a good perimeter defender but he wasn’t any kind of star and his scoring declined a bit more.

He got a nice 2 year deal with the Bobcats and has played very well this year making the PF role his own.

He was probably drafted too high, has never been a star but is in his 11th NBA season, is a solid starter so we cannot call him a draft bust as such. He’ll likely get another decent contract this summer as a complimentary starter or as a solid bench player for a contender and continue his NBA career towards the 15 years mark.

I actually had the opportunity to watch him workout a few times in Chapel Hill after that national title run and talk to him.  One of hands down the nicest most genuine people on the face of the planet.  One thing that I had noticed, which somehow did not leak out into the draft process (guess you can thank his agent for it) is that he limped everywhere and as such showed very sporadic and incosistant explosiveness.  As a youngin going into the draft that is a terrible sign.  Not sure if it ever got diagnosed or leaked what the issue was, but I wonder to this day if some hidden knee issues hindered him from reaching his full potential.

Interesting point NCballer – Marvin has been fairly durable across his NBA career, he’s missed some games but never had a major injury and I’ve never heard him having to sit back to backs due to knee issues.
