What is going on with this guy?  He was a top CG who was recruited by Calipari, but ultimately chose his in-state option at Miss State.  At the time, he was giving interviews saying that he wanted to get to the NBA and thought that Ben Howland was the coach to get him there.  Especially he thought that Howland’s experience with helping guards make it to the NBA swayed his decision.

There was a lot of hype before the season started that the SEC was more than just UK, and UF, with LSU, and MSU getting big name recruits.  But although I think he is having a decent season so far, the Malik Newman hype train seems to have run out of steam.  Just looking at some stats, it seems that he takes a lot of 3s, and doesn’t make it to the line very much.  I know that he wanted to be a PG, but he is averaging 2 apg.  For what it’s worth, his PER is 12.3.

Any thoughts on this guy?  I really thought he would be blowing it up, but he is just so-so thus far.  Was he over-rated, was he under-coached in high school, or is he just not as dominant at the college level as he was at the high school level.  I haven’t seen him play so take my assessment for what it’s worth.

He is overrated. Short wingspan (too often overlooked by members of this site), undersized for position, and is a ball-hogging chucker.

I was a big Malik fan coming in and thought too that he would be a big time scorer at Miss. St. I’ve got a handful of games so far and biggest issue to me is his his shot selection- he will routinely walk over half court and without even so much as a thought of passing will pull up for a quarter court 3. Now, that’s not to say he hasn’t been hitting a few of them, which is impressive, but its the signs of a young guy who doesn’t know how to fit into a team yet. He is a great athlete and he hasn’t been using it, like you say he rarely gets to the line and that’s because he hasn’t been attacking the basket, he way too often settles for jumpers. I think he needs seasoning before he’s ready for the big leagues, but he certainly has all the necessary attributes of an NBA player- just needs to get the mindset right, which is something some guys never quite get, look at Nick Young or JR Smith, but I don’t think Malik is quite as bad as that. I think he’ll continue to be up and down this season and come back next year and be a closer approximation of what we thought he would be this year.

uggh I just typed up this entire response, got stats and everything to show my point, and then my internet crapped out on me. So here is just the overview of what I wrote, and sorry if the stats aren’t 100%, i’m just going off of my memory, but I think it’s worth posting.

Malik Newman reminds me of Randy Foye.

Both players were undersized shooting guards who attempted to play shooting guard.

Royes freshman year at Nove: 10 PPG 3 RPG 2.5 APG on 36/30/83 in 28 MPG

Maliks freshman year at MISS: 12 PPG 3 RPG 2 APG on 37/35/70 in 26 MPG

What made Roye a productive NBA player was his ability to stroke the deep ball, and not turn the ball over. He also learned to play off the ball. These are the things that Malik needs to work on, and like Roye he is probably going to need a lot more time in college to realize his potential.

He’s Daniel Gibson with a crossover, that’s it. I told everyone who’d listen that he’d struggle in college and everyone told me what an idiot I was. He’s extremely ball dominant, not overly athletic, needs a lot of shots to score and doesn’t have a great feel for the game. Again, he’s Daniel Gibson with a crossover.

Malik seems like he is a good player he’s just not the same threat he was in highschool. His hype suggested he should be able to immediately dominate division 1 players but his season has showed that the size and athleticism on the college level has affected his game. He seems like a Ben Gordon type, could potentially start for a nba team or be a super 6th man. Maybe his lack of help on Mississippi state influences some of the deep 3 pointers he takes but he has good skills and a nice 6’3 frame. I’d like to see him commit to being more a passer his 2 assist needs to rise and I’d like to see him get to the basket more, creating more free throw oppurtunities but he’s a good shooter nonetheless and that should create a spot for him but he has to round out his game more to become a Ben Gordon(Bulls level) starter.

The problem is us as fans.. Not the Malik Newmans or Ben Simmons.or the Skal’s. Malik has some decent upperclassmen on his team. So i think his progress at this point is not bad.. The internet is full of mixtapes and not actuall full game footage which has fooled us all. So we expecting highlight proformaces from FRESHMAN right away.  Malik knows how to score..but its gonna take some time. as far as NBA prospect.. I hope and pray he plays at least two years..

Spaceghost – I do agree with you about a lot of players that get hyped in high school.  Players like Anthony Davis, John Wall, Jahlil Okafor, Kevin Durant, are the exceptions.  Even Andrew Wiggins didn’t dominate during his one year at Kansas.  Most one-and-done players are good to decent during their one year in college and are drafted on potential mainly.

But Malik Newman is slightly different in that he contributed to the hype in some ways that other top players did not.  He created the alter ego "The Machine", and even has his own website.

I called it. I wrote paragraphs on why I thought he wouldnt be good and got plenty negs. All the guy in HS was shoot with the defenders hands in his face, and he could make them because he is a good shooter, but what happens when defense level rises?

Newman had a nagging turf toe to start the season and missed weeks of practice over it. He started out slow but his shooting %’s are on the rise. Mississippi state isn’t a very good team.. Abdul Ado is going to look like a god of rim protection next year compared to what they have now.

Malik’s got a great 3pt shot and that will be his saving grace as an NBA prospect. He’s got the tools to light up individual workouts for NBA teams.

He’s a SG IMO, His decision making seems poor as a PG, seems very forced/predictable in halfcourt offense.

Best suited next to a big PG, like Dante Exum in Utah.

I still think he’s safely in the 1st round, probably in the 20-25 range. I don’t think its safe to say Trier’s overtaken him at this point..

You guys have to give these guys time. Not every freshman is going to dominate from day one. Just because he is ranked in the top ten in high school rankings doesn’t mean he is going to be some type of hero. I agree with Spaceghost, HS rankings and mixtapes make players look better then they actually might be. I think a lot of people just look at the ESPN 100, Rivals150, etc. and think they know how good a player is without even watching them play. I credit you for admitting that you haven’t seen him play because a lot of people on here would not admit that, but I personally would not make a topic about someone with out at least seeing them play on T.V. a few times.

He started out the year with a toe/foot injury and I think he missed some practice time before the season because of that. Maybe he is still dealing with some of that injury, who knows. Players develop at different rates and I think he will end up being fine when it is all said and done. Lets revisit this topic in March.

I remember watching some of his nationally televised and always walked away disgusted with how much of a shot chucking ball hog he was. Even on team USA he didn’t seem to entrust his teammates with the ball. His game is great for high school but doesn’t translate well to college. Ultimately, I think he’ll have success but his feel for the game needs a complete overhaul.
