binetParticipantI am wondering: how much is Monk’s stock inflated by his alleged fit with the sixers and Ben Simmons? Various mock drafts rank Monk in the 3-7 range always associated with Philly, as it’s more the team fit than anything that puts him there.
Is he really a better prospect than former Kentucky 3pt volume shooters Jamal Murray and Devin Booker? Where would we have Murray and Booker in this draft?
There is a lot of hype for Monk in Philadelphia right now when I am not sure it makes as much sense as advertised. I get the idea of him playing alongside a forward primary ballhandler and Ben Simmons being a good fit because of that, but I don’t think Philadelphia and Colangelo would want a rookie like Monk to start in the short term, so the vision of his potential fit with Simmons is overthinking. That team will probably try similar options like Jerryd Bayless and the addition then waiving of Chasson Randle illustrates that as well, but I don’t think they would spend a likely top 5 pick on that experiment without being absolutely sure of Monk’s talent (and that means his ability to fit a team without Ben Simmons, coming off-the-bench at times, etc..). There are still some interrogations on Simmons position and what looks a right fit on paper may very well not be. Shooting Guard is also a position where Philadelphia as a lot of "prospects" (Stauskas, Luwawu, Anderson, possibly Korkmaz) to develop and up to two veteran under contracts (Bayless, Henderson) while being (assuming Simmons takes the PG role) probably their weekest position. Some of them will get cut or traded so my issue is not necessarily the depth chart (especially given wing versatility in today’s nba, them possibly playing 2-4 or 1-2 for Bayless) but rather that I feel it’s where it makes the most sense for them to try to bring a proven guy: either via free agency or trade. If they do so and draft Monk, that puts Monk in a position where he would share subsitute minute at the 2 with several other prospects while not being able to play the 3 because of size and not likely not getting minutes at the point either given the depth chart there.
In my opinion, Monk should not be considered a great fit with the sixers more than any other franchise, given there is a good chance he does not start alongside Simmons and a good chance they don’t mesh as well as some may think.
Where should he fall based on his talent only? Is he still in that 3-7 range? (I personally have him at 7 right now and am still high on him, just wondering if we are all kind of biased by this alleged "fit" and should rate him lower…)

Andrew1984ParticipantI know Malik Monk can be a premiere scorer at the next level, but it seems that the Sixers want willing passers. Brett Brown spent 12 years with the Spurs, so they’re his model for success. They move the ball. Can Malik Monk fit into that? Or is he more of an iso guy? I have only seen a little bit of Kentucky, but from the box scores, he seems to me to be more of a "if he’s got it, it’s going up" guy. Maybe someone on here who has seen quite a bit of them can chime in on that?

SubZeroParticipantHe’s definitely not a selfish player and I believe would be a willing passer. He is looking to shoot almost at all times for us but that’s because Cal wants him to play that way because he’s so good at making difficult shots and creating his own (and we’ve all seen how Cal can hold players back)

holefillers1ParticipantCovington takes like 8 threes a game. Plenty of room for shooters

SubZeroParticipantOh I don’t disagree, I was just referring to his question of how he’d fit in a system that likes to move the ball around

holefillers1ParticipantI would hope he is an upgrade to Stauskas. I don’t see Beal or anything like that but who knows maybe he can defend well in the NBA and become a two way player

Sewok15ParticipantAsking where Murray and Booker are taken in this draft is difficult. You must remember nobody thought Booker would be as good as he is. He didn’t score 20 points once at UK. He came off the bench for a great team and averaged a respectable 10 points per game. So Devin Booker right now probably goes 4th in this draft….Devin Booker back then probably finds himself in that same 12-14 range.
Murray was a model of consistency at UK…much like Monk he was a scoring machine. I thought he should have went top 5 last year and he dropped to 7th….this year he would be in that same range of 5-8 in my mind.
Monk doesn’t have the size of the other two but he makes up for it with superior athleticism. He should at the very least be a capable defender. He seems like a better scorer off the dribble than either of the other two UK 2 guards. He reminds me of Lou Williams with his quickness and ability to get shots off.
The Sixers not only need shooting but they need a guard they can give the ball to as the shot clock runs out to take and make some tough shots in the half court for them. This could also be Dennis Smith especially if the Sixers are picking just at 5 and don’t get the Lakers pick. Clearly the top 4 are set in my mind with Fultz, Ball, Jackson and Isaac. If you don’t get any of these guys the player with the highest ceiling might be Malik.
Most teams might prefer Smith in this spot as he is a more natural PG than a combo guard but for fit in Philly I take Monk. So I don’t think the fit jumps him up draft boards all that much…in my mind it is one spot exactly.

kindofblueParticipantA lot people thought highly of Devin Booker. Colin Cowhered thought he should have been picked higher. He was thought to be an marksman, but not a super athlete.

MopgrassParticipantIf Monk were 2 inches taller and, therefore, clearly a SG, I’d take him 3rd. But I still like him top 5.

tuck243ParticipantThe top SG’s in this league are mostly 6’3 to 6’5. I would bet the median height at that position around the league is around 6’4. There are 6 starting SGs out of 16 teams 6’4 and under starting tonight. You bump it up to 6’5 and it’s 9. He’ll be fine.

kindofblueParticipantNot all he is more like a cross between Ben Gordon and Lou Williams. But if develops point guard skills he could be a little like Westbrook.

r377ParticipantI have had Monk @ 4 or 5 on my mock for most of the season. I don’t care about his size, he can flat out shoot.
He is listed at 6″3 200lbs with a 6″6 or 6″7 wingspan. Joe Dumars was 6″3 190lbs and he used to have to guard Jordan, Reggie Miller and Reggie Lewis on a regular basis both regular season and playoffs

SlickBouncePassParticipanthave you seen Monk play defense?
Different frames, no handchecks. Its speed based now and Monk is a great athlete, but he’s NOT a good defender.

tuck243ParticipantWhen you have Simmons who can operate the offense along side a scoring PG, it’s good to have players like Monk. I don’t see who else would be better if they get the Lakers pick. Perfect case scenrio for them is to get the number 1 pick draft, Fultz, and get the Lakers pick to draft Monk. They have a PG that isn’t exactly a prototypical PG and more of a scorer (Think Kyrie to Simmon’s Lebron). Have a 2 guard that can shoot and athletic (his defense is decent when engaged actually), Saric or Simmons at 3/4 with Simmons playing mostly as the PG, and Embiid who can stretch the floor at 5. That lineup is perfectly put together and scary. With Okafor off the bench? Whew.
Dennis Smith would be a good fit if they can’t get Fultz or the Lakers pick. I wouldn’t draft Lonzo Ball if I’m Philly because you already have someone that can set people up in Simmons (honestly you want him dictate the offense because he’s his best when he does). Malik is ONLY an option if they can get the Lakers pick too. If not, I would look at drafting Dennis Smith or Fultz first.

EndlessknightParticipantSlightly bigger Lou Williams. He’s like 6th or 7th on my Sixers wish list, even have Ntilikina over him.

kobyzParticipantMonta Ellis with j.j redick shooting range, that will be great for sixers to add, better fit than all other guard in the draft…
