With their backcourt of Oladipo and Payton they are really going to be able to lock people up and get in on them. Add Aaron Gordon at the PF spot and you now have 3 athletic freaks that like playing D.

I’m looking forward to seeing these 3 grow together with the Magic. Because I feel they can become something special on the defenivse side of the ball. And if Gordon gets his O anywhere near his D he’ll become a superstar.

And if you’re looking to build around the 4 of Gordon, Oladipo, Payton and Vucevic. The one player would fit perfect with this young crew. That would bring everything they need in the starting lineup. Danilo Gallinari, a long sweet shooting SF.

Don’t get your hopes up about Gordon’s offense ever getting near his defence. Although it will be lots of fun to watch them try and build a strong defensive reputation in the league, I cannot help but worry their lack up jumpshooting. Gordon and Payton do not have much of a consistent jumper, and Olidipo is improved but far from reliable at that particular area of his game. Further, they lost Afflalo who gave them this shooting. So, although they will be fun to watch defensively, it comes at a real cost I think.

I think we all know the cost. The games they lose 74-95. Cause if they can’t turn the ball over and get out and run. Some U G L Y will be going on if the Magic play halfcourt O

with what the Magic should have did in this draft and I have come to the conclusion they made the right decision…

If they would have drafted Marcus Smart or Exum, then Gordon would’ve been gone by the 5th to 6th pick…

The top 3 PF’s would have been off the board still by 12, leaving you with just Adrien Payne in the lottery…

With Nikola Vucevic not really a defender that can block shots, it makes sense to not draft Julius Randle or Noah over Gordon… Even though I think Randle is significantly better, but they need someone to alter shots since Vucevic is their big for the future…

Then you can use that 12th pick to select a PG that’s possibly still on the board… Payton or Ennis… Since they explored with Jameer Nelson (not saying they play anything alike) I think the Magic didn’t want another small PG on their roster… So, they went with (traded for) Payton instead of Ennis… Very logical…

I know you didn’t ask this, just my thoughts on what the Magic did, because I was iffy on their draft and roster…

So, to answer your question… I think they will be pretty damn good come next year defensively…  Just need to get a defensive minded coach…  I hate to say this, Mike Brown anyone?  I would like to see them add a SF this off season that can score 17-20 with ease… They will have to overpay (I’m talking max $), but that person wouldn’t need to do too much, just score…. Rudy Gay would have looked great with this team…

you suggested Mike Brown as the coach and Rudy Gay as the player we should splurge all of our FA money on.

But he was the only FA coach that came to mind and Rudy is the only guy that is set on not doing too much but score…  *drops head in shame*

I believe they are in the right track. Players like Jordan didnt come to NBA with 3pts shooting. It can develop, even you and i can develop a consistent jumper if we study it as our job. So i dont believe it is necessarry for a young player. What is important is work ethic. If they have it, i believe so, they will be much better in 2 years.

That being said, i love their defensive potential even Vucevic isnt a rim protector. However i believe they should have a rim protector, and a 3pts specialist out of the bench. Players like Morrow and Stiemsa. So they would have versality.

And for their SF spot, Jabari parker would have looked great, however i see Parsons as an excellent piece too.

Payton Oladipo Parsons Gordon Vucevic would be hellofateam.

The Magic are way way under the salary cap, they could easily throw money at Parsons or wait a year or two when they are in the playoffs and want to contend.

Drafting Smart or Exum doesnt help in their shooting woes either, guess Magic made the appropriate choice.

I think that they have a good foundation (would’ve taken Exum instead of Gordon though). I think that they will struggle to score efficiently and they will turn the ball over like crazy though.

I think they do have a good defensive foundation, but although Gordon is a pogo stick, and a guy who can do some rim protection, he’s a 4 and will probably be more of a weak side shot blocker. I still think Orlando could stand to add a legit rim protecting center who won’t be drawn out away from the basket as much as Gordon will ( every NBA team has a stretch 4 or two these days).

Orlando wasn’t a terrible defensive team last year. They were ranked 17 out of 30 teams, and although two rookies will probably make a huge jump in their defensive rankings, I do feel they’re good enough right now to probably push them into the top 15.

They’re going to miss Afflalo’s scoring, but the free agent market isn’t open yet, and I’m sure the Magic will try to make something happen as far as nabbing a complimentary piece or two. Defense only gets you so far if you can’t score…ask Chicago.

Don’t want to go off on too much of a tangent, but I think the Magic does have a high defensive ceiling, especially since Coach Vaughn played the majority of his pro career under Jerry Sloan and Pop, and started his assistant coaching career under Pop.

I really believe Gordon will eventually play the 3. He’ll get minutes at the 4 always but he will be a good 3 point shooter sooner than later IMO. I think you’ll see him grab boards and ignite the break. He won’t need to handle the ball in the half court with Oladipo and Payton.

Obviously I see them with a lot of defensive potential but it’ll be a couple years before they get even that all together. I see Gordon being the main defensive stopper on most 3s and 4s and maybe even some 2s(the bigger 2s like JJ and Kobe). I like the direction they’re going and think in a few years this core can be good offensively.

to me, they are putting a team together that has a lot of resemblence to the 2011-2012 nuggets.  that starting lineup had the following:

ty lawson, iggy, gallo, faried and koufas

    orlando has:

payton, oladipo, harris, gordon and vucevic

both have tough perimeter defense guys to go with a high energy pf that can run.  the only difference would be that orlando needs to add some depth and some shooters.

Harkless is also a defensive stud. The Magic have a lot of great pieces, there issue is going to be scoring the ball. Harkless, Gordon, Payton, Oladipo are all great upper tier defenders. They will need to rely on Vucevic and Tobias to score the ball. I love their team they just need a scorer to solidify the roster.

Their defense could be very special.  They just need to find a way to put the ball in the bucket.
