He signed a 4yr/72M deal with the lakers. As a Heat fan, I’m sad to see him go but I’m very happy for him because he got a contract that he deserves. He goes to a team that needed a veteran presence and a mentor to Brandon Ingram. Congrats Lakers and good luck Deng. You will be missed.

Good move for the Lakers. Might be overpay but he was getting 3/54 easily from another team with the way these contracts were going.

He should be good for the next 2 years (more than a year younger than Iguodala) and after that Ingram should already be an established player. In the meantime, he should really help us defensively and in that young locker room.

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn’t bother learning what’s an overpay or not now since the cap will go up about another $20 million after next season.

Ingram will not be an established player at age 21.  He won’t get going until the second contract comes around.

At first I thought, what is LA thinking? But now it’s obvious they are in full rebuild mode. Deng adds the work ethic and character they want thier young players to adopt. Could also be a trade piece for a contender in the future.

He should help the Lakers be good enough to keep them out of the bottom #3 of the Lotto.  I like Deng, (but this is way to much for him, like most contracts this year)

Does this push Randle to the bench? I imagine they prefer Ingram for the spacing, and Luke Walton is very willing to go small. If so it’s a bummer, I was hoping Randle could break through a bit this year.

I would rather have Clarkson coming off the bench and start Ingram at the 2. Clarkson, Williams, Nance off the bench would bring so much energy on the court.

But I’m not Luke Walton, we’ll see.

I always liked Deng and he provides a much needed veteran presence but 4 yrs 72 mil seems like a massive overpay for a guy that is clearly on the decline. Deng has a lot of miles on his body, especially after being run into the ground by thibs for so many years. How productive is he really going to be in 2-3 years when the Lakers are hopefully going to be contending for a playoff spot. I understand the rationale behind both the Deng and mosgov signings, but both seem like contracts that could come back to haunt them.

the Lakers have committed 188 million over the next 4 years on 3 players (so far) in free agency. (Deng, Mozgov, Clarkson)

Really shows how much the cap has gone up Deng was a $10 to $12 million a year player under the old cap rules. The Lakers cap will be interesting to look at next summer if they try for other big FAs there. Deng is an excellent pro but he isn’t a young 31 in basketball terms and will be on a big thumping salary at 34/35.

I have no problem with the signing especially considering the options they had. Although at this point a far superior player I don’t necessarily say landing a Nicholas Batum would have been a signifciantly better move when you consider the money&length you’d have to commit to him plus the potential positional conflict with Ingram in the future. Deng in addition to bringing leadership and mentorship brings good versatility. He could either slide into the starting 4 spot or be the first man off the bench.

This team still wouldn’t threaten a playoff spot barring massive leaps from Russell and Clarkson but at least they are bringing in some veteran proven players preventing the young guys from running the team like a frat party.

     PG: Deangelo Russell/Marcelo Huertas
    SG: Jordan Clarkson/Louis Williams/Anthony Brown
    SF: Brandon Ingram/Nick Young
PF: Luol Deng/Julius Randle/Larry Nance Jr.
    C: Timofey Mozgov/Tarik Black

All this did was get lakers closer to reaching the cap floor . Deng leaving a playoff team for the Lakers at this point in his career proves he has an overvalued opionion of himself and actually thinks his being there will make them relavant…or he has given up on ever winning from here on out

If you forget about money, he is a great add. Lakers said they needed a veteran on the wing to help while Ingram developed. Now as for the money, not a fan but at this point as has been stated, I don’t know what an over pay is. We see guys that are 10th men like felt and Solomon hill getting 10 mil a year so 17 mil per for deng is just whatever.

Next two years they gonna keep him on the low, playing him smaller minutes in order to keep him fresh and let his body retained for the second helf of his contract, when lakers are in more advance part of their rebuild and after the youngsters have devolp and the team ready to contend, than they will use him all out!

A lot of teams are "overpaying" for veterans. It’s hard to see what’s a good market deal for certain types of  players are until this whole TV deal takes effect. I don’t think that’s a good value deal for the Lakers even though I love Deng as a player, but the lakers need some talent even though I think Dengs best days are behind him.

This is stupid. His good years are well behind and he has too many miles on his body.

This and the mozgov signing is crazy – just goes to show that no one really wants to come to LA, so they have to vastly overpay each FA to get them there.

Deng even came out and said he was only expecting half that money !!!

Well done lakers, maybe a 10th or 11th spot in the west…..
