 If Lin’s play continues like this until the end of the year, what happens for him in free agency? He is only on a one year deal and will be an unrestricted FA this off-season. The Knicks will be at the cap level and will only be able to offer a finite amount. 

 

Could another team with significant cap room come in and offer a 7-8 million a year multi-year contract hoping for continued success and an uptick in ticket sales? 

 

I’m sure Lin’s preference is to stay in Dantoni’s system and stay with the franchise who gave him his shot, but it’s hard to say no to significantly more money to an under-the-cap team. It makes me think of Wesley Matthews with the Jazz…..he went undrafted and played really good ball for a season or two before Portland came in and just offered crazy money the Jazz didn’t want to (and really couldn’t due to the fact the are a mid market team) match (he was a restricted FA, unlike Lin).

 

How will that work? Thoughts?

 Please someone tell me he will be restricted…….the Knicks could match any offer and pay a luxury tax with out batting an eye….that would be great for the Knicks and the NBA in general.

 

But I’m thinking he will be unrestricted.

If he’s smart, which we all think he is, he will either stay in New York for hte full MLE(assuming it’s 5.76 million, not the half one they’ve installed in the new CBA.) or if he does need, he would have to be sure that wherever he goes that that team is running a hihg pick and roll offense. He doesn’t seem like a hasty decision maker that would chase the money, but you never know.

Knicks will keep Lin for sure as Neo has said, he is a restricted free agent also, with the New York media, he is probably starting to make more money off of endorsements than his current contract.

Thanks guys for the responses…..I just verified he WILL be restricted. Phew. Knicks will keep him with ease. 

 

Now I can enjoy his game knowing he isn’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future…..

 

And all I know is this makes me want to call all the national networks and demand they put more Knicks games….they are fun to watch now…..this will also be the only Lin topic I post…….for god sakes he has already blown out the summer phenom known as Bismack Biyombo.

 He is restricted free agent and further more the other teams cannot offer him more than the average NBA salary (Arenas Rule). I’m a big Lin supporter but I don’t think he will continue doing this. Assuming he "comes down to earth" but still continues to be a good starting level player, he will get a solid $4 to 5 million deal, which no team will be able to beat and he will sign with the Knicks. There is no need to panic. Just like most rookies, his current team controls his fate for a number of years. Let’s not speculate about what would happen if he kept playing like this because (a) that isn’t going to happen and (b) the rules don’t really have a place for a guy to be salary capped at NBA average and put up MVP numbers.  

His current contract (which is the GSW contract he signed as a rookie) is $788,000. His agent is fielding calls night and day (especially because of calls from China) and I agree that Lin will make more in endorsements this year than salary. Tonight’s game winner 3 kind of took the legend to a new level.

the Knicks have his "Bird rights" and will be able to offer him $5 Mil per. If another team signs him to an offer sheet for a higher amount, the Knicks are allowed to match that without the extra $ counting against the cap.

I agree that even if he did get potentially bigger offers elsewhere, the Knicks would match and he could make more in endorsements staying in NY especially with the Cantonise community.

 I believe no other team is allowed to offer more than league average. Basically he has a special rookie cap on him as well as the Knicks being able to match any offer. I thought league average was about $5 million, but I now think it is lower, like $2.5 million. 

Anyway, Knicks will resign him. And if he settles into being a 16 point, 9 assist starting guard, he will be a bargain at under $3 million. Heck, the Knicks will probably make that money back just on the marketing rights for his jerseys.
