I follow this site for a few years now and the more I see here, the more I’m really getting into all this pre NBA talk. Every year there are dozens of players, who slip deep into the draft coming draft day or don’t get picked up at all mainly because they are lacking the multidimensional aspects needed in the league or just because their overall "player 2k points in talent" is just to low to really make it playing significant minutes somewhere.

There are shooters who lack size and skills like Jimmer who is someone beeing a prime example of a talent sitting on the bench in Sacto way long because a player is asked beeing more than just a gunner. On the other end there are a lot of so called tweeners on the frontcourt too. Players who are cordon bleu kind of ballers but lack size at the 4 and speed at the 3 like Jeff Green. HE pretty can asked to do everything cause he has tools to allow him playing 40 mins a game as a power forward holding his own okay but in reality are lacking the power to check bigs like Monroe, Love, Dirk, LA or even ‘wings’ (cough) like Josh Smith who is even stronger than himself playing the 3. It aint easy beeing a forward in todays NBA if you are 6’8" and can’t play down low while beeing not elite quick enough to check the wing.

Then we come to the 5 where we have seen guys like Chuck Hayes, Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan, Roy Hibbert, Marc Gasol, Joakim Noah, Pek, Bosh or Dirk. So basically everything the NBA has to offer beeing 6’8" or higher even if mutants like Hayes are even shorter. But still the 5 spot is a pretty tall position to play. Even if the changes could be seen every game nowadays, most of the teams have classic starting NBA center caliber bodies and are all around 7 feet. If you need to bang down low with Hibbert, Noah, Dwight or DeAndre, you need to be tall and crafty.

I have seen Patric Youngs stock fall from year to year since he came to the Gators. Everyone was waiting for him to cash in on his incredible physical gifts but not much has happend since his sophomore season. After he had a lift up to 1.6 BPG in his 3rd year he is almost scaringly exact back at his career averages of

    26 MPG on 0.590 FG% / 10.5 PPG / 6.3 RPG / 1 APG / 0.8 SPG / 0.8 BBP / 1.4 TOPG

over the last three season. I didn’t count the freshman year but this stats are pretty much exactly the same this season counting.

This isn’t exactly bad for a player to get but if you have seen this guy go to work then you really wonder why he is not dragging everyone down and starts a riot everytime. This Rhino of a manchild looks the guy from Green Mile walking around. Who to compare this guy to? The only real NBA body in the league right now I can compare him to just physically is Reggie Evans. The problem is, while both are similar build and stong as hell, Patric somehow is not able to clean the boards on the defensive end or is blocking as many shots as you might expect cause in college HE is the mismatch.

So what is holding back Patric Young is the question everyone asked and that is not easy to answer and his low ceiling is undeniable when you basically see no progress in numbers. It’s flat out not accepted in todays basketball sports to say somebody did better when his stats don’t back that up.

But I don’t want to know what you don’t get when you think about drafting Young somewhere in the 2nd round of this years draft. This site has him ranked as the dead last position at 60 going to San Antonio. There basically no risk in selecting a guy like him with a low pick and that’s the reason why I would never ever give away my 2nd round draft picks for nothing or as throw ins in trades. What I want to know what I get when I bring in this monster of a player? I never followed him and just tried to find out more about him over the last couple of weeks. I have to say that I’m somehow still impressed with what I see from him. His biggest plus to me is his toughness. You can’t buy toughness and heart, in no sports in the world. He is a warrior, looks like the 6’9" version of Nate Robinson, not the bounce but a silhouette of a boxer. I think there is always a place in the league for guys like him and I’m not just buying this insane build body and hyping his ‘athletism’ (and this word is used way to much in general to describe somebody. Wiggins is athletic and Jabari not. It ain’t easy like that!) but I like having a guy on my team who will be cheap as hell over his first few years, is a fantastic teammate, stands up for his teammates and plays his heart out every single game. And honestly his 10 ppg in 26 mins are not impressive but not bad either for a guy shooting almost 60 % from the field.

I’m not saying that he is Ben Wallace or something but Ben Wallace was undrafted because he not much to offer aside from his instincts on defense and his build. He was an undrafted 22 y/o and bounced around 4 years before coming to the Pistons where he finally arrived when he was already 26 and hasn’t really shined before in Washington for 3 years and in Orlando in his 4th year he averaged 5PPG / 8 RPG / 1.6 BBG in 24 min.

I personally think the draft is always about opportunity for both the teams and the players. It really doesn’t make a difference to a player at which number he is drafted. Guys like Pierce were completely upset that he fell a few spots and swore to destroy all who have been drafted before him. But how many players careers have been better because they have been drafted higher? It all comes down to the team where you go to! Imagine Jordan on the Blazers? Shaq with Webber in Orlado? (Orlando traded Webber on draft day for Penny).

Ireally think that aside from his impressive physical tools he has very nice feet both on the offensive and on the defensive end. He has a jump hook that is can be very effective. In this scout video from preseason below you can see two versions of his jump hook. When he makes it when they show his strenghts, he doesn’t fade back from the basket like he does when he makes them. I mean he basically get’s 10 ppg in the flow of the game with very good numbers. Around the rim he is almost unstopable and I have absolutely no doubt that if he ends up with the right team and coaching staff he will be rock solid if not close to the borderline where basketball autistic phenomen like Ben Wallace or Jerome Williams start to flourish.

Patric Young may not have a high overall ceiling but he might end up beeing fantastic at what he already can do. Imagine him beeing selected by the Heat or Spurs! I have no doubt that Patric Young finds a team in need for what he has to offer and will have success at some point. Maybe he is just the player who needs some extra years to finally find a place to stay or find his own patch and image he develops?

Patric Young is one of the few people that could benefit very nicely from not being as talented as other players.  If he gets picked up he’ll likely get picked up by a team that doesn’t need him to produce right away.  For his sake, I hope he ends up something like Dejuan Blair (picked up by SAS)

I really think you can say he is a high character guy and very his mobility is very impressive to if you consider he should be ligit 6’9" in shoes after the combine. I bet he bench press but also his mobility and other athletical tests will be crazy. I’m excited.

Patric has weight lifted his way out of the NBA. While being strong and a good character guy, he is no longer agile or quick. I appreciate his motor , his interaction on the court with his teammates but he cant rebound of of his area , which is important for a guy with no real offensive skills. I like Patric Young dont get me wrong but to me he looks to be laboring up n down the court with all that upper body mass.

That was excactly my concern when I saw him play on a few highlights but watch the football link up there and you will think different about that. He is a crazy athlete and I don’t think there are a lot of players with a better mobility compared to his size. His footwork is very good and he is not just a pumper.

I’d love to see my Bucks take a chance on him with one of our 2nd round picks. I’ve always liked him and I’m surprised his stock has fell as much as it has. Just looking at the guy you can tell he has an incredible work ethic. Also, seems like he has pretty good athleticism. Wherever he lands, I believe he’ll be a solid role player.

Good post. Patric Young will most likely go in the 2nd round, a great value pick. He’s not the most talented player on the Gators, but he is arguably the most important player for the team. He’ll always box out his man and always rotates on defense… NBA coaches will use him.

I’d compare him to Glen Davis. Obviously there body types are wayyyy different, as are their skill sets: Big Baby is probably a little more skilled but Young is by far a more committed defender. But think they’ll have similar careers as that 3rd/4th big off the bench that brings energy to the floor.

To me his strength is the only thing he has going for him…his basketball skills are very limited and he isn’t a defensive player…I see a Joey Dorsey clone at best.

     Thanks man.

Sorry for the typos, I’m not a native speaker and not always easy for me especially with this spam alert when you want to post links or videos. Why is that so hard here?

Off topic: I’m going to change privately to a new city in Germany in 5 weeks and I thought about writing an english written Basketball blog when I moved over as a hobby cause I enjoy sharing opinions about young prospects and teams. What you think about NBA players blog from Germany, would you read that too?

Thanks for the answers and sorry for disturbing!
