FastAndFuriousParticipantMichael Jordan or Magic Johnson? My uncle said Magic Johnson was the best player to ever play, at first I thought it was crazy, not alot, because I myself think Magic will always be a top 5 NBA player no matter who comes along, but then I looked at what he accomplished and I thought it was a legit argument.
Michael Jordan:
6x NBA Champ
5x MVP
14X NBA All-Star
6x Finals MVP
10x Scoring Champ
3x NBA Steal Champ
1x Defensive Player of the year
10x NBA All First Team
9x NBA All Defensive Team
NBA Rookie of they year
3x NBA All-Star game MVP
Top 50 All Time
NCAA Champion
Career Averages: 30.1 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 5.3 APG
Magic Johnson:
5x NBA Champion
3x MVP
12x NBA All Star
3x Finals MVP
9x NBA All First Team
2x All Star Game MVP
Top 50 All time great
NCAA Champion
Career Averages: 19.2 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 11.2 APG
Now according to the numbers I think Mike blows anybody off the map, but Magic had a few years took away from him due to (HIV) and not saying he would have caught some of Jordans numbers but I do think he could have added to his legacy a bit more.
I honestly do think it’s a legit argument, Magic was a MONSTER and changed the PG position for ever, I mean he almost AVERAGED a triple double 2 times in his career(18.6 PPG,9.6 RPG,9.8 APG) (16.2 PPG, 10.3 APG, 9.0 RPG) , All time leader for career playoff Triple Doubles(30) And second All Time regualr season Triple Doubles(138)
What do you guys think?

Tight ButtholeParticipantI think Jordan is the greatest player of all time. Magic is the greatest PG to ever play the position, I would also put him at #2 player of all time.
If you could start a team with any 2 players to have played in the NBA, most people would have Jordan and Magic as their choices.

FastAndFuriousParticipantMy uncle just was saying he thought Magic because, Magic could literally play the 1-5.
He made it to 9 Finals in the toughest era of basketball(1980’s)
And could have possibly won 1 or 2 more titles had he not retired early due to his sickness.
But once again I don’t disagree with anyone’s answers.

mosdefParticipantA person is able to play or defend 1 to 5 positions cuz of size alone, not skill. Its something the person has no control over of how big they get. Im not knocking Magic, but I think Jordan was better. Magic may have been able to play 1 to 5 positions but it took 1 to 5 positions just to stop Jordan, lol

FastAndFuriousParticipantYou make no sense, you have to have a certain skill set to play any position, especially at the highest level of basketball(NBA).
To play all 5 positions and be extremley effective like Magic did, was truly special, you don’t have a clue my man. He was super skilled.

mosdefParticipantjust becasue you are taller doesnt make you the better player. shooting, dribbling and passing are skills. defense is a mentality. height is genes.
if you guys are trying to clown a philosphy do you really think Jordan could defend the center position at 6’6”? I thought not. just cuz Magic was 6’9” and Jordan 6’6” doesnt make Magic better. A matter of fact, jordan was the better defender period

KayjayParticipantLast time I checked you need skill to defend anyone. If it was all about Magic’s size being the fact he could guard 1-5 positions then Brendan Haywood would be as good as Andrew Bynum.

FastAndFuriousParticipantI never said because Magic was taller he was better, where did you get that from?
And height has nothing to do with it Barkley was 6’4 and is a HALL OF FAME PF, stop with the excuses.
Height has nothing to do with the argument.

mosdefParticipantyou said you wouldnt disagree with anyones answers and yet you seem to disagree with my answer
so you think cuz Magic was 6’9” had nothing to do with him playing all 5 positions? seriously? Jordan was better.I consider Magic in the top 5 players of all-time. Im not knocking Magic. What Im saying is that no matter how skilled Magic was, if he was 6’2”, he wouldnt be able to play all five positions so the all five positions argument I dont really pay attention to. You can bring it up. I just choose to ignore it. You can bring it up at the barbershop talk but I consider Michael the GOAT. Wilt, Russell, Magic right below him

mosdefParticipantmy top 6 is like yours just a couple of differnt spots. who do you have from 7-10 to round out your top 10???

Mr. ChicagoParticipantMichael was the best player ever, and it really isn’t even close.
You obviosuly dissected the stats, and he came out on top. Now, while Magic did lose several years to HIV, Michael also lost 18 months to ‘playing baseball.’ (That is in quotes, because I’ve always questioned how the greatest player, in his prime, can just walk away from the game).
Magic Johnson definitely redefined the PG position, and to me as well, was the greatest point guard of all time. I also think he scores points along with Larry Bird for putting the current NBA on the map.
However, when dissecting what separated Michael, his playoff chops; there is really no one in his category. He single handedly holds the most career moments, that have truly mattered. The ‘flu’ game, the ‘shot,’ the ‘shrug,’ the pushoff, etc. But outside of this, he also continuously won on his own terms, and to me we will never see another Michael Jordan, and I think that is one of the major aspects in separating him from other great players. He was just on another level skill wise, and well as competetively. He was the greatest player of all time.
My top 6 (I believe I differ from a lot of users on this site, but mine is as follows)
6. Wilt Chamberlain
5. Larry Bird
4. Magic Johnson
3. Kareem Abdul Jabbar
2. Bill Russell
1. Michael Jordan
As always, just my two cents.

omphalosParticipantI think if you’re looking at their accomplishments and accolades there’s a pretty big difference that should jump out at you right off the bat; 9x All Defensive First Team and DPOY to Magic’s 0 of either. Offensively, Magic probably had as big an impact as MJ with his assists and ability to dictate an offense, but Jordan’s elite defensive ability is the most obvious edge he had on Magic – Jordan remains the best two-way player in the history of the game, and at this stage no one really comes close as far as excelling on both ends to the same extent.

HaleParticipantMichael Jordan. Magic was sensational but Mike took it to a whole new level. Michael was a much better two way player then Magic was and Jordan had a better jumper too. Magic was truly one of a kind as a passer, but Jordan was a much better scorer and defender. Mike also dominated the game like no before or after him has.

GrandmamaParticipantEven Magic says Jordan is the GOAT….and that’s that
