EspressoParticipantSo I go to school for management and I associate a lot of the managerial topics to basketball.
Today we disccused leadership and terms such as ”leaders from behind and the front”. "Leader from behind" is a person who doesnt exactly succeed individually or outshines, but is able to rally the troops and guide them towards the desired goal. From the "front", is a person who’s more capably skilled-wise and technically, often setting the standard by example.
So what "leaders from behind" come to mind?

T RexGerald Wallace with the Celtics last year.
But when i think of the term lead from behind, I think of fake leaders who wait until they see what’s cool, and then try to be all about that and act like they were the first, never giving credit to the real innovators.
Like Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook.
Or Adam Silver with the Donald Sterling situation. Acting all brave after the only clear choice to be made was completely obvious.
Then these fake leaders get tribally minded media members to hype them up as super innovative and/or courageous.

T Rexthe animation company Pixar has been lauded for it’s lead-from-behind success, as your professor defines it. They higher the most talented story-tellers and artists and trust them and encourage them to be their best selves.
Brad Stevens is the same way, showing great confidence in his players, which brings out their best performances, especially in the clutch.
For the other definition of lead from behind, the negative version that I described above, think Bernie Sanders with his "Black Lives Matter" bandwagon jumping, or Hillary Clinton in her fake anti-wall street/corruption rhetoric.

NBAjunkie81Participantfirst – he (or she) wants Everyone on the team to experience growth & success & the Leader seeks to use his talents to help others become better & as a result the whole team wins – a leader will challenge his people in private, but Never embarrasses them or puts them done… It’s All about building them up…. And most of all, the leader is a person who in times of emergency – when everything is at risk steps to the front, rallies the troops with Action (not talk) and if he must, takes control & propels the whole team to their goal, sometimes by the sheer force of his will… The "leader" leads by example, he doesn’t talk about "it" he Does it… & he Never asks a teammate to do something he has not or would not do himself… A leader is humble & a leader holds himself to an ever higher standard of conduct than anyone else – not only in his professional life but in his personal life as well….
I can tell you that I have seen people grow into Leaders who were originally shy or young & they doubted themselves – many times they did not even know they had it in them… But when a crisis occurs, the person w/ Leadership ability emerges & steps to the front & wins the day…. We have all seen this in our lives… It’s almost like a movie, but it’s truly how it happens… But Leaders don’t "lead" from the back… People follow men & women who demonstarte the courage to step up… It takes courage & ability & selflessness and many people seeks to hide when their is risk… That is why Leaders are so admired… But I have never seen anyone lead from "the back" either in the business world or in sports… There are many valuable people behind the scenes that are crucial to success & they set a great example everyday, but that isn’t Leadership…. In any organization, everyone plays a role, but very few people are able to lead & it is never done w/ talk…
In the NBA – right now – I LUV Steph Curry’s leadership skills… His teammates LUV him, he never wants to make it about himself but you better believe when his team is on the ropes, he steps up, demands the ball & Knocks Out any team that threatens what his team is trying to accomplish…
Jordan, Bird, Bird & Isaiah were All great leaders – absolutely amazing… I know a lot of people hate Lebron & he can def say some dumb things after the game, but on the court he is unselfish but when things get rough, he steps up – he may not always win (no one does) but he has the courage to do it…
Tim Duncan is one of the best Leaders in NBA history – even in college at Wake Forrest – Duncan’s maturity & leadership were Legendary…
Paul Pierce is a great leader, Kevin Garnette is a great leader…. These are special, special people & it is hard to define Leadership quality in words but we all know it when we see it….

T RexPierce grew into a good/great leader. He wasn’t always that way.
KG just seems like a leader from day 1, like Marcus Smart or Jesus Christ.

ChoppyParticipantHe was the guy I always felt ‘led from behind’. Not always the flashiest stats but managed to inspire those around him.

Rip256Delly. Leads with intensity, work ethic, energy and desire to win. Not the best player but his intangibles are off the charts at the PG position where leadership is the most important.
Surely you cant neg me for this one. Delly was a pure leader last season while other sophomores were still determining whether they belong in the L.

tuck243Participantdoesn’t make someone a damn leader. Also, you need to understand his "intangibles" aren’t real. He’s not a defensive player that you think he is at all… Face guarding someone 94 feet isn’t defensive genius.. You’re just trying to get the ball out of someone’s hands (I do this all the time at LA Fitness when someone is going off). Then the Cavs left other players WIDE TF OPEN to double team/triple team Curry off screens. This is why Iggy won Finals MVP. He walked up below the free throw line and shot jumpers. Harrison Barnes had SO many wide open 3’s because the Cavs abandon them to help Delly out with Steph. When Delly was on an island alone with Steph he was on SKATES. Delly isn’t a damn leader because he had 1 or 2 good offensive games (it’s the NBA) and had help stopping Curry. Stop it… He’s an energy guy off the bench (that might also be a dirty player) and plays rough. That’s it. He’s not good or great at anything else, so stop all this nonsense.
Sometimes I can’t tell if you’re the mild version of T-Rex or not.
