So my buddy texted me last night from a bar and told me he had just had a conversation with Larry Hughes (we’re from St. Louis). I responded "did he apologize for being a bust?" hahaha. That was harsh but it really got me to wondering what kind of career he had. Was Gatorade High School player of the year, I really respect that he could have gone anywhere and stuck around and went to SLU. Came in the league in 98, 8th overall pick by Philly where he showed a lot of promise. The in Golden State and Washington had some really nice years with that Gilbert and ‘Twan 3 headed attack. But then the whole Cleveland debacle happened. A lot of pressure was put on him but imo fairly with that contract he accepted and he did not live up to that at all. H really tailed off after that with stints with Chicago, Charlotte and the Knicks and now I don’t think he’s officially retired but he can’t find a job in the NBA. He has career averages of 14pts, 4reb, 3ast, 1.5stls with 30% 3pt shooting. I think he was definently a solid pro for the 1st half of his career but I just feel with all the promise of  him coming out of high school and then that contract from the Cavs, he never lived up. What you guys think?

He had a 22ppg season in 03-04, and that was over the course of almost all of the season. If a guy does that in any year, no way can you call him a bust.

i used to love his game, what happened to him?!  he had promise years at young age in Philly and Golden State and then some great seasons with Washington, basically it all went very well like you said until he came to Cleveland to play next to LeBron and there he started to fall, what cause this? he also had trouble in his personal life, things who bother him, also he was used in a role which didn’t suit him as a player, as more of a spot up shooter, somthing he is not.

I wouldnt call him a BUST!! But i do think he could’ve been a better player, than he showed.

During his freshman year some were comparing him to Kobe..He had great hops, ball handling skills, nice shooting touch and was an ok defender..He had a few good years in the league…But he had alot of personal problems in his life ,and the death of his brother and that might’ve affected how he played on the court..

ive learned to accept larry hughes for what he is as opposed to what he could have been…he was a gifted scorer who could get to the rim but he did take a lot of selfish shots

i think larry hughes was a good player…he balled out for the first half of his career…its jus when he got to cleveland and they needed a second option to lebron, larry hughes couldnt provide that and it hurt his stock around the league and his confidence..but overall i dont think he was a bust, st. louis should be very proud of him.

He is not a bust. He was a solid player, a borderline allstar for one or two years, and thats it. But you can not call him a bust. Possibly a dissapointment for the cavs, but definetly not a bust.

His appearance in the dunk contest was a bust.  But besides that he went from good player who played the right way and fun to watch on a good team (Wizards) to couldn’t stay healthy nor contribute consistently when healthy for a playoff contender (Cavs) to awful shot selection trying to earn another contract (Bulls Kings etc..)

The fact he didn’t have a reliable jumper did him in at Cle. He was given a contract to play his game like in Washington with Gil, and at that point in his career LBJ wasn’t willing to come off the ball for part of a game to let Larry do his thing and get going. Was expected to be more of a spot-up shooter as apposed to being a playmaker. Not to mention a couple early injuries, and a lack of confidence. Was definitely not a bust. 22,6,5 says otherwise. Was his longevity what we would have liked? Probably not but his best moments were pretty incredible and decently sustained. Otherwise we could say B-Diddy, Ricky Davis, LO, and even Shawn Kemp were busts. Not busts, just didn’t do as well as we thought they could have. Gotta show Larry some love. He was one of the more versatile guards in the L at one point.
