In the I did not expect this category, CBS is reporting the Lakers signed Kobe to a two year extension.  No numbers disclosed….yet.

He tweeted a picture of his signature on the contract (along with Mitch), but that was all.  Very curious to see what the salary is.

ESPN reports the deal is for nearly $50 million, with $23.5 in 2014-2015 and $25 million in 2015-2016.

I think the Lakers payed way more than they needed to.  I realize Kobe is the face of the franchise and has more value than just on the court, but even taking that into account I think 20 mil a year would of been PLENTY… no one on the open market would offer Kobe more than 15 mil a year.  I also think this was selfish of Kobe knowing this will be his last two seasons, the Lakers will have a ton of cap room this off season, and need all the space they can get to have any chance of building a championship level team this summer.

Lol so much for hoping Kobe would take a paycut.

I understand this is Kobe, but he’s 35 and coming off of a devastating injury. Why sign him before seeing how he returns?

    I don’t get it smh.

I don’t think the timing says it is a basketball decision. It is certainly a sound business decision in that having him under contract is good for season ticket renewals, advertising renewals, and whatnot. From a cap standpoint, if Nash retires, they still will have plenty of space to work with.

I figured it would be in the 20-22 mill range so it wasn’t extremely higher then I was hoping. He did take a big paycut from what he could have demanded. Honestly, looking at this team right now, im beginning to think we wont be players in the free market at all. We might need all our cash just to keep this squad together. Lakers are playing really well right now and have played the second hardest schedule in the nba and are 7-7 and improving as they figure out their rotations. Shoot, Jordan hill alone might demand 10 mill per this off-season the way he is playing.

This is contract is a joke.

Really Kobe? You need 24 million a year, when we aren’t even sure you are still great, and no matter how much cap space the Lakers have, paying a 35+ year old player this kind of money is just terrible.

It just guaranteed the Lakers are stuck in mediocrity for two more years. Kobe will take them to the postseason and get bounced early, killing their chances to get decent picks and his salary will keep them from being a true contender by limiting who they can sign. Pretty obvious how terrible this move was.

you see the future? Even with this move they have around 26 million in cap space this summer. They also are looking like a better team this year then they did last year and that’s before kobe comes back.

You can’t be that delusional to think they are going anywhere in the next two years. I don’t care how big of a Laker fan you are, that can’t be possible, you can’t be that out of it. By the way, the cap situation is explained quite well in the Lowe article on ESPN.

are they gonna win it all? probably not, but what do you mean going anywhere? Competing? Making the playoffs? Trying to get better with each opportunity that presents itself? If that’s not goo enough, then about 25 teams are probably stuck in mediocrity according to your criteria. West is wide open. Lots of good/very good teams, no dominant teams outside of maybe san Antonio.

I understand Kobe has value that isn’t on the court. He will sell a ton of tickets. As a business decision, it’s not a bad move at all. If anyone could come back from an injury like this, it’s Kobe Bryant. I don’t doubt he’ll come back a great player. But strictly from a basketball perspective, it was a terrible move. They will be stuck in mediocrity. In the NBA you must have a direction. There are three acceptable directions a team can have. You are either a contender, rebuilding, or a team that has been bad for so long that just making the playoffs is an accomplishment (and even then after a few years this strategy must come to end ala the Hawks). The Lakers don’t fit any of those categories. There aren’t 25 teams in mediocrity, but there are several and the Lakers are one of them. They won’t win a title. They won’t make the WCF. They won’t get good picks. The next few seasons for the Lakers are meaningless, the only thing they have to play for is Kobe breaking records.

I know your blind Laker love leads you to making completely irrational and subjective comments on the matter, but this contract is just stupid.

The Lakers goal, like all teams, should be to win a title. It doesn’t matter how much cap space they will have, or how good Kobe will be, paying 1 player 24 million dollars a season is not good for the team.

Whether or not Kobe is elite is besides the point. Kobe didn’t need this contract. Because no one else would have paid him anywhere near that amount, and because his thought process should be how many other players can we bring in to win a title, not how much money can I squeeze out of this deal.

Here’s another thing. Having no one except him and Nash signed for 2015 sounds great. But the catch is this: signing FAs is a lot harder than trading. I believe that Cap is around 60 million dollars. In trades, you can go way over this. In FA, you cannot. So take Kobe’s 24 million, and Nash’s roughly 9 million, and you are already at 33 million dollars. You already cannot afford two max contract players. Let’s say you get one. YOu now have 11 million dollars plus a mid level exception to sign 9-10 players. Do you think Kobe, Nash, Melo, on mid level player, and 8 scrubs is a championship team? Or even close to one? No. The flexibility of that extra 11-14 million a year he took will hurt the Lakers.

I don’t think there is any blindness in anything I have stated. In fact I have brought up very reasonable thoughts. I don’t know how the lakers will do. but kobe had to return. His value goes beyond the court. The lakers still have cap flexibility and the team isn’t that bad right now as is. Who knows who is on the roster next season. Who knows how they do this season. Glad you guys think they are stuck in mediocrity and kobe is not worth 15 million dollars and all that. Im gonna wait and see how things play out.

nash  contract is not fully  guaranteed. I don’t care what Duncan or LeBron make, if they want to accept less, then good for them. , the lakers are like the Yankees, they can afford to go into tax. They may have to take a few years to do whatever, but well see. And your opinons that continuously bash kobe and laker fans in general imply you have more bias on this topic then I.

Again, you make points with no relevance.

"His value goes beyond the court"

Explain that one to me. Would he not have that off the court value at $14 million a year? What exactly has he done off the court other than possibly rape somebody?

It has nothing to do with LeBron or duncan "accepting less", it has to do with both for Kobe and the Lakers this being stupid. Had the Lakers not offered him this contract, no one else would have.

And your point about the tax is pointless. You can’t get to the luxury tax through free agency. You get to the luxury tax when you have had tons of players under contract for multiple years and all of their salaries begin to creep up. I never questioned the Laker’s willingness to pay it, but you can’t go over the cap with free agent signings.

Btphard said it best: it’s a good business decision.

However, the lakers organization has always spoiled kobe. Kobe knows how to get what he wants and it started ever since he claimed he wouldn’t play for any team that drafted him except the lakers. In addition, the lakers organizaton showed loyalty to Kobe during:

    1. the shaq situation.

    2. caving into kobe’s demands of getting help or trade him.

    3. and this last bloated contract Kobe received. and how he claimed he would not take a pay cut to help make the team better.

If this is really true I think the Lakers are in trouble. How to upgrade the roster now?

They should have done when the season is over and they still have the cap space.

Stupid if you ask me, it’s clear he won’t play for any other team so why do it now? Only to keep the Face of the franchise at a standpoint where it’s not needed?

I was hoping it would be for <$10 million per year so they can get more stars or >$30 million so I can watch Kobe shoot 50 times per game.

I guess it officially decides whether players want money  or rings. I thought Kobe was going to sign for around 10 million per season so the Lakers could put a team around him. 24 million is insane because the more he gets the less they have to spend. I just don’t get this at all.

Based on the reports, Kobe never requested or asked for a certain amount of money. The offer they gave him was the first and only number he saw, and he accepted.

I mean, what was he supposed to do? He’d have been dumb to turn that down and ask for less lol.

In true American style he will take as much money as he can get. Forget the fact that he already has enough money as it is. He could of easily taken a pay cut so they could sign better players to help the Lakers contend.

Indiana knows all about contracts didn’t he help negotiate his best friend Eric Gordon’s contract ?

Kobe would have seen that Shaq got $20 million a year for when he has 37 and 38 years old, so I always assumed that $20 million was the starting level. I’m a bit surprised the Lakers did it for two years, why not take it a year at a time to give both sides flexability.

What are the rules about players signing extensions, I assume it is only for none rookie guys who are in the last year of their deals and not those with player options next year like LeBron and Melo etc
