If Kobe is serious about winning more championships, it’s pretty obvious what he has to do.  He has to re-structure his contract.  In almost all cases I am for players taking as much money as they can get, and I always argue that they are worth every cent they get and that the best athletes a grossly underpaid.  But if Kobe was to play for the league minimum the Laker’s would have a such a competitive advantage over the next 2-3 years.  Kobe’s net worth is 220 mil (He has earned around 330 mil since entering the year).  At this point you could argue that winning a 6th championship would easily earn him the money he would lose by taking a pay cut. You could ask Pau to take a pay-cut (obviously the league min is out of the question), With their roster almost entirely empty they could get creativie and try and use the 7th pick to acquire something nice to pair with Kobe (Or draft a player they can immediately make them better).  Then using free agency to put a roster together would be a GM’s dream situation (given that Kobe would be playing for the league minimum).

A contract is a contract is a contract. It can’t be restructured.  Non starter. Trust me, myself and most every Laker fan wishes this was possible.

How am I getting negged for stating the rules?  I’m convinced there is some loser with 5 or 6 different accounts negging my posts. That’s like the 5th one with the same negs the past two days.  I’m sure it was that grammar Nazi.

Kobe will never do that, but I see what you are saying. If it is strictly about winning, players would do this a lot more, probably. But agents would hire a hitman to kill them, most likely. 😛

Llperez would love if Mamba did though! His hard-on for Lance Stephenson and paying him 13mil a year would be more (albeit ridiculously stupid) palatable. But any GM who can persuade a superstar to take the minimum to win more should be like the president of the world or something. That’s like convincing the Middle-East to give us all of their oil.

Afford? Yes. Any team can afford it though. It would not be wise though. And you can admit that, I’m sure of it, dude. Kobe would kill him within a week too. So you’d be out 13mil and Kobe would be on trial for manslaughter.

DO YOU WANT THAT FOR YOUR LAKERS?!?!

It would be nice for the team to have taken less. But regardless of how much money you have, its hard to turn down millions of dollars. And taking a pay cut doesnt gaurantee they build a championship caliber team.

they still have over 30 mill this summer to spend and another 9 mill coming off next summer in nash’s contract. They arent handcuffed, it’s just there arent many great free agents available.

Not yet… Soon though. And a lot of guys would love to come to LA. It’s the truth and will always be the truth. What young kid didn’t pretend like he was on the Showtime Lakers!? LA will always be a prime destination for FA’s.

If that happens from a smartly run franchise, I will write you a genuine "I am so sorry" post. I am a man of my word. But some franchises are very VERY stupidly run.

Y’all act like there are a ton of players that can go to LA this off season…  He has 2 more years on this deal…  I’m sure if the opportunity presents itself to obtain more pieces he would restructure his deal, but right now he doesn’t need to…

If the Lakers can’t get any free agents the next 2 years does it even matter that Kobe makes that much money?

He CANT restructure his deal.  Even if he wanted to, if he came out and publicly said that "I Kobe Bryant want to restructure my contract that the Lakers organization mistakingly gave me" he wouldn’t be able to. Its not permitted by the CBA.  The players union won’t allow it.  It is not possible.  Can’t explain it any better than that.  Its not up to Kobe.

        • A new "renegotiation and extension" provision allows an existing contract to be renegotiated so the player is paid a smaller amount over a longer period, but the player’s salary cannot decrease by more than 40 percent. Renegotiations previously could only increase a player’s salary.

Per Larry Coons NBA Salary Cap FAQ –

A contract for four or more seasons can be renegotiated after the third anniversary of its signing, extension, or previous renegotiation (if the previous negotiation increased any season’s salary by more than 4.5%). Contracts for fewer than four seasons cannot be renegotiated. A contract cannot be renegotiated between March 1 and June 30 of any year.

Only teams under the cap can renegotiate a contract, and the salary in the then-current season can be increased only to the extent that the team has room under the cap (and cannot increase the player’s salary beyond the maximum salary). A renegotiation can only be used to provide a salary increase — players can’t take a "pay cut" in order to create more cap room for the team.

So no, Kobe does not qualify to have his contract restructured.  I’ll take the salary cap master Larry Coons word over an ESPN article that was printed after the new CBA was signed.

Nash can be waived and his salary extended up to 3 years. He was a great player and he has the right to claim his money, but now he’s done and parting ways is the best for both the team and him.

good point, i read this before and forgot. but IF the lakers want to be really active this summer and go after multiple guys, they can always cut nash and pay him out over 3 years and thus free up an additional 6 mill this summer against the cap. If they were to do that, would put them at under 30 mill in salary. Last i heard, the cap might be close to 68 mill this summer. Lakers could have close to 40 mill to spend. Kobe isnt handcuffing them from being active regardless of how anyone feels about his contract.

I think it’s better to bite the bullet this year and have Nash’s deal at the end of this season.  That 3 million in the next 2 years could be the difference between a quality role player or not.  Sounds strange I know but you never know.  If the Lakers were to sign every top free agent this summer not named Lebron, they still wouldn’t be a Championship team, a playoff team definitely but not a contending team.  The extra 6 million for Nash isn’t needed unless they have a way to land Melo and Lebron, and I put that at about 0%.

Lol… people neg me for saying something that is true? The Lakers are always in win-now mode. They can’t afford to miss the playoffs again. Nash WILL be waived using that stretch provision.
