Is he basically a real good combo guard instead of a point? Is he a creator really?

C’mon man. Kyrie has no one to pass to that can finish reliably to have his assist average a little higher. Passing to Waiters on the wing shooting 39%, dumping it down in the post to Zeller who is shooting under 42%, or Gee barely shooting 41% is going to kill your assist totals and average.

I agree totally but do you ever see Kyrie not leading his team in scoring? Not saying its a bad thing because he is one of the best scorers in the game but is that really a pure PG?…do you ever see him getting to say 9 assists a game?

I wouldn’t say he’s a combo guard but he’s more of a scoring point(possibly due to lack of teammates), he does need to work on his passing and playmaking but he’s the best scoring point guard in the league and is only 20, so he has alot of time to improve. His defense needs major improvement though

People don’t always agree with me but I think if Kyrie, Westbrook, and Rose are PGs than so is Kobe, Lebron, Pierce, George etc…

These are all really great players who have the ball all the time but a PG is a distributor to me…I think of Rondo, Paul, Kidd, and Nash when I think of PG’s…those other guys seem like shorter SG’s or SF’s to me kinda like I would’ve never considered Allen Iverson a PG..

“People don’t always agree with me but I think if Kyrie, Westbrook, and Rose are PGs than so is Kobe, Lebron, Pierce, George etc…”

I see where those people are coming from. Dumb statement to say the least.
And yes, you can say Lebron is a PG….. or a SG….. or a SF. maybe even a PF.

People don’t like realism…and you didn’t say why its’s dumb…so what makes these guys PGs? Height? Is Kobe a PG? He averages the same number assists as Rose and Kyrie and basically plays the same role.. Was Iverson a PG?

@scout I kinda agree, Irving is naturally a scorer not a creater at heart, he had a loaded duke team but in his few games he played he looked for his own shot first

Sorry I had to ask. I think Cousy,Magic,Rondo,CP3 as PG. They really create. I am a Kyrie fan just have not really seen him create, seems suited as a scorer. He takes over the scoring 4th quarter no doubt. Just curious what others thought. I agree he lacks weapons but at Duke he was the same.

    Kyrie Irving

He’s a scoring Point Guard, plain and simple. The fact the he happens to be one of the best shooters in the NBA (even off the catch and shoot) doesn’t change a thing.
He has one of the nastiest handles in the NBA.

A shot by Kyrie on his team is statistically a better shot than anyone else on his team shooting sans Tristan Thompson.

Just look at the FG% of his teammates. It’s pathetic. I think Kyrie realizes that the Cavs have the best chance of winning with him taking a shot.

A combo guards is usually a SG in a PG body. Players like Irving and Rose have decent enough playmaking to be considered just scoring PG’s.

I think he is at the disposition of being the best scorer on his team. I think if you put talent around him he’d be a 18 (a very efficient 18) and 9 type of player. He would get his teammate more involved and score when its needed (4th quarter). I don’t know if I worded this right but in my mind he is definitely a pg.

18 is a bit low imo…once he gets good players around him to be honest I see him averaging 23 ppg and 8.

He’s already averaging 24ppg as a 20 year old point guard with insane efficiency numbers. I expect those efficiency numbers to go up, his ppg to dip a little, and then his assist numbers to skyrocket.

The guy scores so naturally I just don’t see him averaging less than 20 ppg.

that’s fair and he has really efficient numbers despite being the only player capable of putting the ball in the basket with consistency. I was more going for the idea that his scoring and assists would be more balanced once or if he gets more players around him.

In terms of positional fit I liken him to Gilbert Arenas in his prime, not to say their games are similar as Gilbert was a superior finisher and Kyrie a superior shooter, but their PG skills and scoring mentality is the same. People forget that Gilbert had 3 straight monster years in a row pre injury leading his team, consecutive seasons in which he averaged 25.5 ppg/5.1 apg, 29.3 ppg/6.1 apg, 28.4 ppg/6.0 apg, all while consistently being near the top of the league in spg.

Such a dumb post. I dont know whats with everyones infatuation with having a “true” point guard. Whats wrong with a team that has a shoot first point? A player doesnt have to “fit” into a role. Westbrook Rose and Irving are all scoring point guards. Comparing Kobes and Paul Georges point guard ability to Irving, Rose, is ignorant.

What I can’t stand about basketball fans is their obsession with positions. Over the past 20 years, the Bulls have 6 titles and the Lakers have 5. The PGs of those teams were John Paxson, BJ Armstrong, Ron Harper, Steve Kerr, and Derek Fisher. Guess how many of them were the true ball handlers of their team? 0. Positions don’t matter, formulating a system around your players is. Teams that have Rajon Rondo or Steve Nash base their offense on the PG penetrating and finding their man. Teams that have Kyrie Irving, Derrick Rose, or Russell Westbrook are going to let those players shoot 20+ times a night because that is how good they are. These players aren’t combo guards, they aren’t shooting guards, they are just revolutionizing the PG position with their skill. I admit Westbrook is way too turnover prown and should defer more seeing as the leagues leading scorer is on his team, but with Irving and Rose, I can’t take threads like this. Both of them are excellent at every aspect of basketball. They do pass, they do set teammates up, they have great ball handling skills. But their supreme scoring talent allows them to be more than a PG. Think of them like smaller versions of LBJ. He is his teams primary ball handler, and scorer, and is unselfish, all at the same time. You just don’t think of it like that because he’s a “small forward”.

PS To avoid stupid responses, no, Kyrie and Rose are not as good as Lebron.

positions were created so a novice could follow the game.
