If you haven’t seen the play here it is.

Look, I’ll admit I dislike Kobe a lot and I may be biased because I am a Suns fan. Even though I despise him, there is no doubt in my mind that he is a top -10, maybe even a top-5 player of all time. It just seems to me that any time he does something different, no matter how hard or easy it was, he will get all the attention in the world. And before you Kobe-fans get mad at me, I think Lebron and Wade are the same way.

Don’t believe me. Check out almost every major basketball site and you’ll see a video or link of Kobe doing his lay up over the backboard. It seems like videos are all over the place and that it is being over-hyped, FOR NO REASON! Its not that hard! I just don’t see the big deal with it. It shouldn’t of even counted because Harden was even touching him when he went up! The contact was way before the shot and it should have been out of bounds. Anyways, most of the guys I know who play basketball can do that at least 25% of the time they try it. One time Rudy Gay was fouled hard, flipped it over the backboard, and got the AND-1. Here is that clip.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H3Jow4IAE4

Who here has seen that clip before? Most of you might have seen it before but it didn’t get nearly the hype that Kobe’s did. Its way more impressive because he was actually fouled. I think Harden played great defense and Kobe got bailed out because he’s the best player on the planet. If it was a foul, then call it, no big deal. If he wasn’t it shouldn’t have counted. I don’t know what the deal is?

Ok, Kobe is a great player and maybe that and him playing in L.A. is the major reason why this is getting this so much attention. I can’t think of any other reason why. Any opinions on the subject? Anyone agree or disagree?

#1) Know the rules, only if the ball TOUCHES the top of the backboard its out of bounds… And the foul shuld have been called and it would’ve counted its called continuation!!!

#2) That shot from Rudy was from 2007-2008 season… If my memory serves me correct it was one of the ending seasons Top ten plays…

#3) Its KOBE!!! He did that shot without a foul called AND gave them 26 points, 7 dimes, 6 boards, 2 steals and NO turnovers… How about you do this- Ask EVERYONE you know that follows basketball if Rudy Gay is their favorite player, then see about Kobe… I guareentee you Kobe will get the nodd… Its not about being overhyped, its about one of the best players doing a crazy shot and you’re in awe… Its no different from Ben Gordon making Wade fall… I bet you no one seen that but they can recall when Wade made E. Snow fall… If majority of people are fans of Kobe than Gay of course you want to showcase Kobe… Its common sense…. NOT OVER HYPING….

    LOOK: I bet you’ve never seen this…

Everything happens to everyone sometimes LeBron gets blocked. Kobe does something bad and same up there with Wade. I still think Wade’s good though.

thanks for the opinion tuck. I happen to agree with you that its about being a superstar that makes great plays remembered and not always the play itself. point up!

I was just stating that it’s almost everywhere on the web when Rudy Gays was on nba.com and that was about it. I guess I kinda understand what you are saying tho.

and tuck if the ball goes over the backboard its also out of bounds, unless they made that change this year, which would not surprise me.

to cp33, yes they did change the rule. It used to be that the ball could not go over the backboard. Not sure when they changed it to be honest becuase I just found out last night when Kobe hit that shot. I don’t see why they wouldn’t count it. If guys can hit that shot they deserve 2 points.

Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Micheal Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Jerry West, James Worthy, Julius Erving, Clyde Drexler(MJ of the west) this would be my top ten maybe take Clyde out and put Larry Bird in

I’m a laker fan, but Worthy over Kobe? not even close. Kobe is top 5 all time. If I had to rank top 10 off the top of my head it would be:

    1-Michael Jordan
    2-Kobe Bryant
    3-Wilt Chamberlain
    4-Kareem Abdul Jabbar
    5-Bill RUssell
    6-Magic Johnson
    7-Larry Bird
    8-Oscar Robinson
    9-Hakeem Olajuwon
    10-Karl Malone

West and Shaq are very close. Lebron, Wade and aybe even Paul should join this list eventually.

Are we ranking these players based on their championships, statistics or just how good they were as players? Ranking the top ten players of all-time is almost impossible to do. For one, the game has changed. The players now are stronger, faster, more athletic, etc. There’s no way a prime Bill Russell or even Wilt Chamberlain could defend Shaquille O’Neal in his prime lol. O’Neal would dominate them. For two, majority of us weren’t alive when a lot of those older players were in their primes.

agreed tezo, Bill russell was 6-9 220, Shaq would eat him alive. It’s impossible to compare eras. I was just going by career accomplishments i guess. If all those guys were put on the same court in their prime, the players from the 60’s and 70’s would have trouble staying on the court with todays guys. Even in the 80’s, guys like Magic, Bird and Dr J all had some weaknesses that would be more exposed today. I think guys like Jordan, Olajuwon, and Malone would be just as great today though.

I think some people are underrating Dr. J… Julius Erving was as talented a wing as anyone who’s ever played. Probably the best post player for a wing, best shot blocker and rebounder as well… His ball handling may not be elite two guard level, but his mid range game, length, athleticism and defense most definitely were. As good an all around player as anyone in NBA history, give the Doctor his respect.

Same for Wilt. This guy is the same height as Shaq, 7’1″ without shoes, with the athleticism of at least Andrew Bynum, in his prime, Dwight Howard-esque. Not to mention a very good passer. He toyed with his era, he just decided one year, I’m soo good I’ll lead the the league in assists.. and he did. I don’t care who he was playing against… averaging 50 points a game is bananas…

Did you ever see Wilt or Dr. J play? Or have you just read articles and watched highlights like the rest of us?

I hear what you’re saying. No disrespect to the old school guys who dominated their era, but I just don’t think they could dominate today. Majority of them would be just good or average players at best. The game has changed and grown leaps and bounds since then. I mean, Russell was only 6′ 9″ 220 pounds. He had great defensive-rebounding fundamentals, but I think he’d be a role player in today’s game. Wilt no doubt was before his time size and athleticism wise, but I seriously doubt he could defend a prime Shaq. I mean, come on now lol.

I think the Dr. would be a good player in today’s game, but there are a lot of athletic guys with size and length. A 6′ 7″ – 6′ 8″ guy with a 40 inch vertical and 7 foot wingspan is a norm in today’s game.

No disrespect to the old school guys, but the game and players have both evolved.
