Yes, he is shooting slightly below 40% this season, and yes, his shot selection has been horrid.  No, his defense is not what it used to be, and he doesn’t get to the free throw line like he did in his prime.  But holy crap, this guy is ridiculous.  He is 36 years old, coming off of a torn achilles and a season ending knee injury.  It’s his 19th year in the league, and he just tallied 31 points 12 assists and 11 boards against one of the best teams in the NBA (albeit without Demar Derozan).  Of course he’s not quite as good or as efficient as he used to be, but wow.  I am shocked that he came back as strong as he has, but I’ve come to expect the unexpected when it comes to Mr. Bryant.  He is not the greatest player of all time, maybe not even top 5, but he is definitely one of the most legendary and iconic figures in all of sports.    He shouldn’t be able to do what he can do at this stage of his career and given his injury history, but that’s just Kobe I guess.

Kobe’s stepback on T Ross was legendary. Guy waited for the defense to be set, dropped him then drew the foul (albeit with the little leg kick that’s supposed to be an offensive foul)

Getting a triple-double is quite a performance, especially for a player that is 36 years old and coming off severe injuries. Over the last ten years, Karl Malone is the oldest player to record a triple double. After him, Divac recorded a triple-double after this 37th birthday and for the rest only Kidd managed to record a triple double after his 36th birthday.

Karl Malone (November 29, 2003), 40 years old
    10 pts – 11 rbs – 10 ast

Vlade Divac (February 17, 2004), 37 years old
    14 pts – 11 rbs – 11 ast

Jason Kidd (March 1, 2010), 36 years old
    13 pts – 10 rbs – 13 ast

Paul Pierce (March 29, 2013), 35 years old
    20 pts – 10 rbs – 10 ast

Gary Payton (March 3, 2004), 35 years old
    24 pts – 10 rbs – 10 ast

Other players like O’Neal, Camby and also Duncan had triple-doubles well past their 30th birthday. I can see Duncan getting a triple-double again this season, with his minutes being the main reason why he wouldn’t manage it.

Kobe Bryant was ridiculous last night, even though he did miss some key free throws he still hit major clutch shots. Kobe’s intensity even when the Lakers are 4-13 he still brings it every night.

Best game of the season so far from Kobe. But even his subpar games, I’m honestly surprised at how well he has looked this year in terms of beating guys off the dribble and getting decent shots. He’s still being guarded by the others teams best defender every night and he isn’t backing down. I know the lakers aren’t going anywhere soon so I hope at least we get to see Kobe stay healthy to finish his career and go out playing at a high level

This is when it would have been helpful for kobe to swallow his pride and go somewhere to win a championship. As in leave after last season and not sign the 2 year extension. He is still a great third option for a championship team. Or a number 2 option on a playoff team/contending team. He could have taken a Pau like deal on the Bulls or even 10 million from someone not named the spurs, mavs, celtics, or any team lebron is on. He could have teamed with Bosh and wade in Miami for 2 years and went for a championship in an easier conference. I don’t care that he took the money, I just wish we could see him playing on a contending team his last 2 to 4 years in the league, whether that be in LA or somewhere else.

Kobe is playing back to an elite level but even with him averaging over 26ppg, the Lakers are still struggling. We all know that Kobe plays with as much passion as anyone in the NBA and even if the Lakers are losing, he’s doing his hardest to drag them back into any game.

Even though he is on a huge salary, I’m sure Kobe does not see this year as merely a scoring exercise. I think he wants to finish his career a Laker and if they can add a FA or two in the next year or so he can still be a force.

On a fun predictions thread pre-season I said Kobe could be a scoring title contender with KD out and LeBron sharing the load, now I wish I’d had a small wager on it.

Also Kobe is under 150 points behind MJ on the all time list so look for him to move into 3rd place over the next 5 to 7 games.

Kobe’s 30,000 points and 6,000 assists is another great milestone. I bet Toronto hate the sight of him although he was 50 points down on his greatest game last night.
