bloodshyParticipantKobe had a great game tonight, finishing with a triple double and getting his team a great road win. He had 23 points, 11 assists, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block on very efficient shooting: 6/11 fg, 3/5 3pt, 8/11 ft. Great game by Kobe, who has really impressed me this year.
One interesting note is that Kobe also had 9 tov. One more and it would have been an odd quadruple double.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipanthaha, interesting I just made a post where I said he was the 6th best SG in the league this year. The negs are bound to rain in.

bloodshyParticipantAnyone who’s read my posts on this site in recent years will know I’ve been highly critical of Kobe historically. I think his historic greatness is exaggerated by many, though he’s certainly on the short list. However, you have to be impressed with what he’s done this year. I expected him to be washed up, but he’s played some very solid ball. Whether you love or hate a player, credit should be given when earned. I’m not sure where I would rank Kobe this year, but he’s certainly much better than I expected him to be.

HitsterParticipantKobe was going to get loads of shots this year and we all know Kobe is a quality shooter. He may have lost a bit of quickness from his peak but he is an all time great scorer and knows how to position himself to get openings etc.
Also having missed the bulk of last season, some people may have written him off so Kobe had the extra incentive to prove people wrong.
His FG% is a career low this year but he’s still scoring at an elite level so good luck to him.

TallmanNYCParticipantYou recognize that his FG% is at career low (and also league low, I believe, at 37.5%), but then you say his still scoring at an elite level. Don’t you realize that he pretty much was just taking a ton of shots at the start of the season? Any SG with the green light from his coach could get up 20 shots a game (there are about 95 possessions in a game, getting up 20 shots isn’t that hard if you just go out and shoot it) and probbaly most would hit at higher than 38%.
He raised his FGA to the second highest level in his career, while his TS% is at the lowest. Much lower than his rookie year even.
What he has done has been pretty neat when you factor in age and injury, but it wasn’t good basketball. The crazy thing is that Kobe can do stuff like this tripple double. He can actually help a team win without shooting 20 times a game. It will be interesting if he changes a bit and focuses on the other stuff. Certainly the shooting a ton was not working out for the Lakers.

Toronto16ParticipantYou can’t get a triple-double or quadruple-double for the turnover stat.

HitsterParticipantTallman – very good points, I’ll agree that Kobe is shooting inconsistently and is taking a load of shots but he is still 4th on ppg list this season so he is still an elite scorer even if it isn’t highly effective.
Without any decent support, I cannot see what else Kobe can do, he could spread the ball but would his team mates hit more baskets than him I wonder. He is almost back to the same position he was in the first post Shaq year when he had to carry a below average Laker team. But he is now a decade older and cannot quite carry the team as before.
Interestingly in 2004/05 he took just over 20 shots per game, this season he is taking 21.6 shots per game so the need for him to shot less is very valid. In 2005/06 he took over 27 shots per game but he averaged 35ppg that season so that was fully justified.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI like Kobe in the facillitator role, especially at this point in his career. He really is an outstanding and underrated passer who has that rare ability to see how a play will develop and who will be open one or two steps ahead of the defense. I’ve always said that he could average 10 assists a game if he had the desire to do so. The only problem is that he gets careless with his passes at times (hence the high turnover numbers).
If Kobe continues to play this way for the remainder of his career, and is kept to 30-32 mins he can still be highly effective. The key is that last night the Lakers were making shots and built a nice lead, which prevented Kobe from feeling like he had to take over the game with his scoring. It will be interesting to see if he can continue this more patient approach, even when things aren’t going as well, or if he will revert back to forcing shots.

HitsterParticipantKobe with ball in hand will almost certainly draw a double team so he can be a good facilitator to the open men if needed but does he have the confidence in his team mates I wonder. If Pau Gasol was still there then it could be a different situation.
