 It seems likely that Orlando will trade Howard before the deadline, so the Knicks have to come up with an offer to compete with the Nets and Lakers. Here’s my suggestion:

Knicks trade:

• Amare Stoudemire
• Landry Fields

Orlando trades:

• Dwight Howard

As a Knicks fan I appreciate that Amare came in last year and re-lit a fire in the Knicks locker room. However, I lost a lot of respect for him when he did not come out after halftime in the playoffs last year due to back spasms. The Knicks were playing for their lives and he did not help his team. This rubs me the wrong way because I work for a living and its not like I can call out because of back spasms. 

Anyways, a duo of Dwight and Melo is vastly more dynamic and effective than a duo of Amare and Melo. 

This trade also seemingly keeps Orlando in the playoffs. They will have a very similar team to the Knicks last season pre-Melo which was also on track to make the playoffs.

 I think the Magic would want young players and draft picks. We know what Amare is. He is a guy who makes 20 million a year with a history of injuries. Don’t get me wrong… I love Amare. I have been a suns fan for years, but what do the Magic do with Amare? They still have no cap space and now they would be sitting there with a 1st round exit team.

It might sound like nothing but you can’t even stand up let alone play. Its a debilitating injury if you can’t get them loose, and very often they are deep in your muscle tissue. Its night night, end of story, no matter whats on the line. Its not even just about pain, you can’t really move.

 I dont want Dwight Howard for 1 reason……..Mike D’Antoni is the coach, if we had any other coach I’d take him but as this point Chris Paul should be looking for a house in New York and New Orleans should just send him to the Knicks and take back, Billups, Fields, Douglas a 1st, a 2nd and 3mil cash, they can then use the MLE on Thorton and get back in Louisiana, and potentially re-sign West

This trade gives Orlando nothing. It a given now that if teams want Howard, they are going to have to take a bad contract in return, and give up their young players. The Knicks lost the majority of their trade chips when they recieved Melo.

Plus why take on another big contract if you are Orlando? If they are losing Dwight, they are basically losing thier win-now formula as well.

 Canesboy: I’ve never had them but I have worked with broken bones for much less than what he’s making. Guys I work with have had them. Larry Bird played years with extreme back pain. I think he could have toughed it out for a half.

What was the point of him toughing it out? There were not going to beat Boston if he was playing hurt and Billups couldn’t play. Yeah they might have won a game, MAYBE two games, but you gotta protect your 100 million investment. Theres a reason you don’t want players rushing back from injuries.

 Amare try to get back into the game last season but he just could not help the team playing with a bad back. larry bird had to end his career early because of those back pains. Nicksfreak i dont know were you work at or do for a living but im sure it doesnt require you to sprint up and down a court and do explosive moves. Dont forget that unlike Larry bird, Amare’s game is based on athletisism. I dont even like Amare but even I got to admit that noone could play with back pains. if yo dont believe me just look at Tmac’s career.

They have no reason to trade Howard unless they get Durant or Lebron in return. Anyone else gets them further from the title this year (and they’ve already got minimal chance).  What’s the point of trading him for guys that allow you to maybe get the 8th seed? Anyone want to be Phoenix or Houston right now? In the NBA, mediocre teams have the worst future. They’d be much better off letting him test the market. Nets and Celtics would be the only big market teams that might have cap room.  If those teams are dumb enough to waste their cap space this offseason (extending Jeff Green), Howard re-signs.  Then you try to pair him up with a star PF or SG when you have room in a couple years.  If he leaves, tank the following season and hope you draft Shabazz. I rooted for our 2003 team to lose and it gave us Howard and a really good look at a title in 2009.

The goal is to acquire superstars or potential superstars; acquiring guys like Amare, Pau, Brook Lopez, or other names out there would set the franchise back about seven years.  Getting draft picks wouldn’t really help either. Do you really think any team acquiring Dwight will miss the playoffs?

I think the Magic will trade Howard to the highest bidder because this is the same team that chose to acquire Grant Hill and Rashard Lewis via sign-and trade(to give them sixth year+more money) than sign them outright for a five-year max contract. I mean, we started the Pistons Eastern conference dynasty by giving away Ben Wallace and outbid ourselves $28 mil for Lewis b/c we gotta have that guy for the sixth year! Who doesn’t want to pay 33/34 yr old non-superstars $20 mil on the sixth year of their max contract?  Yeah, that’s why the lockout happened, stupid owners.
