By now everyone should have heard about Derek Fisher signing the $25million/5year deal. I had a few questions of what the direction of the team. So I am wondering what everyone thinks the Knicks need to do to be contenders, and not just reach the playoffs in a weak Eastern Conference. Should they scrap the team and build from Tim Hardaway Jr., or should they go all in on retooling this team? Should they trade into the first or second round? Or not at all?

Their next priority should be to do whatever they can to keep Melo. If he leaves I think this is a really bad overall team, they have talent but I don’t think JR smith and Amare should be leading the team in scoring. The bad part is they really can’t do much until the contracts come off the books and I’m pretty sure they don’t have a 1st round pick next year but I may be mistaken. I can see them making noise in a couple of years when they have cap space.

Stupid spam filter won’t let me edit it. I basically wanted to say that the Knicks do have their pick for next year because thy can’t trade picks in consecutive years, and that they should focus on a trade involving Tyson Chandler and Roy Hibbert or Andrew Bynum and George Hill.

I don’t think that Derek Fisher will be a good enough coach to lead a team to a title and I don’t think that Tim Jr. is good enough to have a team built around him. I agree with Ballin’ they need keep Carmelo before anything else.

We have absolutely no idea what kind of coach Fisher will be, except a young, inexperienced one who has the advantage of playing against most of the players he’ll coach against, and also being able to lean on one of the most decorated coached of all time who happens to be his boss, and was his boss once before, with some level of success. Whew. For all we know he could be the next Spolstra, but I dont see Lebron on this team. So ideas of success should be tempered. If I could move Chandler for a ok big and a first rounder, maybe the Suns, Charlotte or Jazz’s pick…. well, maybe the Suns, I would do it. And draft the best point guard available. Christon can at least slow down opposing guards, unlike Felton. And the Knicks need a PG they can develop.

If they are looking for success quickly they have to keep Melo and get rid of guys like JR, Amare and Bargnani but this looks really hard considering huge contracts.

They need to keep Melo at least for asset purposes. They should keep Tim Jr and Shumpert. Maybe keep Chandler for a bit and trade him later. Shump doesn’t have high stock right now. See if he plays better. JR I think they need to just cut. I am not sure the implications of that but get rid of him any way you can. Bargs and STAT may have to stick around. Don’t think its a bad thing to keep Amare. He is a decent vet. , Very overpaid but not much you can do about that now. They are very old. Play any young guys and buy a couple second round draft picks if you can. I think coming away with one young guy from this draft would be big. Also there will be some good undrafted players. Get a couple into camp.

To summarize, keep Melo. I know it isn’t up to them but that is the most important thing. Play the younger guys like Shump and Tim Jr. Still play Chandler, felton, Bargs, and STAT but keep them healthy for possible trades. Get rid of JR any way you can. He is a good player but I’d rather play Shump and Tim Jr. Bring in a couple young athletes via draft if possible and undrafted FA. Biggest of all though is stay the course!! No quick fix chances!!

Its busted already, id blow it up totally by trading Chandler and Melo for as many draft picks as possible and tanking hard. Amare and Bargnani have 35mil in player options coming to them. When that diabolical number comes off the books, you will have high lottery pick/s, draft picks/young talent from the trades, plus space to sign multiple free agents in a big market. Go back to go forward. Sell Melo now. I know he’s being a queen and saying he wont play in certain locations, but someone will bite and pull the trigger.. Cleveland? Phoenix? Philly?

Sign and trade Melo to Chicago and bring Felton and Smith with them. Bulls are cheap they aren’t paying Boozer to not play for them. Trade Chandler for a 1st. Trade Bargnani expiring contract for a bad one and aquire a 1st. Obviously you guys will be bad for 2015.

Add me to the few who say blow it up.  They have a couple huge contracts on the books for a few more years so just bringing Melo back for two more years doesn’t get them anywhere as they will not be able to bring in veterans due to cap issues.  In a couple years when the big contracts come off the books Melo will be two years older.  (he is already 30)  How good will he be then or how many years will he have left at elite level?  New York will be one of the few destination stops for NBA players so getting FA’s in a couple years will not be impossible for them like it will be for other places.

Trade every player who has value (current and future #1 picks) who will not be part of your winning team in 3 years.  A good young core in NY is different then a good young core in Minny or Cleveland or most other places in their ability at bring in FA’s.

If Melo doesn’t sign long term this summer the Knicks need to bottom out.  It will take a couple years to clear that cap mess, but then they’ll be free again – possibly with a couple lottery picks in house.

I think I’d be looking to deal Melo with some of that crap to accelerate the rebuild.  I really don’t see a great path forward for them if Melo stays.  Just a couple more years of road playoff games and then what?  NY has not proven itself to be the free agent haven some suggest it is.

I personally think that Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr. need to be in the starting line-up together. Shump would play the point guard, with Hardaway Jr. as the combo guard. I think JR Smith and Raymon Felton have been bad role models for Shumpert’s development. Fisher could use Shumpert to play a similar role that he (Fisher) played on in L.A. Hardaway Jr. is a gem for the team, and they should not lose him to players like Felton and Smith. They could focus on a trade of bringing back Jeremy Lin and Asik. Their contracts would come off the books before the 2015 Free Agency. (Lin and Asik NOT for Melo.) They could move Chandler for someone like Emeka Okafor (sign and trade to a one year deal, because he needs to prove himself) and the 27th pick. I believe they should be in it for the long haul. Just don’t make a mistake of signing overpriced players and taking on bad contracts.
