knicksfreakParticipantI think the Knicks should seriously consider trade options for Melo. Let him chase titles while we rebuild the right way. Hopefully get some draft picks for him
Draft targets:
Deangelo Russel: I love how his game translates to the league. Especially good fit for the Triangle. He has good size for either guard spot. Phil loves big guards and he has the playmaking ability as well as the scoring ability to be a major weapon for a team with few weapons. Has a reputation as an average athlete but I think he will test well athletically at the combine.
Jahlil Okafor: I’m torn on him. Very polished on offense but a ? on D and as a dominant rebounder. Has the size and the tools just hope he has the motor. Could be a good fit in the triangle since he can make the passes out of the low block.
Trade target: David Lee, lee is one of the top passing bigs in the league and a great rebounder and solid scorer. As well as being a willing defender. Passing bigs are key to the triangle’s success
Main Free Agent targets should clearly be Gasol then Monroe. But the Knicks need much more help from cheaper free agents
Possible Inexpensive free agent options for Knicks
Kyle Singler: a very smart player capable of hitting shots or making a good pass. Great BBall IQ and a willing defender
Brandon Rush: 3 and D player who might look to go to a team where he may play a bigger role. Always seemed to be a solid player and not a locker room disruptor
Xavier Henry: highly touted player going into college. Good shooter who could excel playing in an offense with good ball movement
Thomas Robinson: reclamation project. Maybe he could get some of his "the next STAT" hype back. At the least an energetic big who can rebound off the bench
Landry Fields: smart wing player who is kind of a jack of all trades but master of none. Good rebounder at the 2 spot, solid passer, willing defender, underrated athlete, and solid shooter. He excelled in D’Antoni’s motion offense so I believe he would be a good fit in triangle
Nick Calathes: big lead guard with a solid all around game. Great playmaker. Chandler Parsons played second fiddle to him at Florida to give you some gauge of his talent.
Luis Scola

juves4783Participantnot sure why you’d trade melo when you free up $45M to spend in free agency with phil jackson backing the operations. lot of big names at pf and center this year. personally, think they should draft mudiay and go after gasol, lopez, aldridge, monroe and milsap hard. hope that they can get a center and pf out of it.
they should also move one of the sg’s.

r377ParticipantThere are still a few kids on here that think Melo is a great player and worth that big contract – HE IS NOT
The guy is 30yo, not much of a passer or team mate, lacks defense and leadership skills needed to advance in the playoffs….
They are stuck with him for this season and the next four – earning $26 mill in 17/18 and he will no doubt take his player option of $28 mill in 18/19 season where Melo will be 35yo.
Just like so many we see these days, this will be an unmovable contract. No team will want to pay him that much.
Melo doesn’t care about winning a championship – all he cares about is scoring his points and getting paid.

HitsterParticipantThe Knicks didn’t enter into the Rondo stakes, they haven’t really been mentioned in the Josh Smith scenario either. They own their draft pick this year so should get a good young piece or they look to flip that for a All Star level FA.
The amount of major targets out there next summer who are likely to move look a bit limited. But Phil will have to make moves sooner or later, he would not want a long term losing deam and the owners are paying Phil mega bucks to try and get the Knicks back in contention. They will not want him doing a Tom Hinkie type rebuild with the Knicks.
I’d have thought that Phil would have liked to have done something with STAT’s and Bargnani’s expiring deals unless cap space is his main goal for next summer.

knicksfreakParticipantI was looking for inexpensive free agents who could be a good fit in the triangle.
Robinson and Henry are reclamation projects who could realize some of their potential in the correct system.
Scola is a smart post player who can pass which could make him a good fit
Calathes fits the mold of a big PG that Phil likes to employ. He is an excellent playmaker and solid across the board in everything else
Fields was on the first team all rookie team not long ago. Melo ruined the chemistry of the team which hurt Fields who is a system player. He was the best rebounding SG in the league when he was getting minutes

OhCanada-ParticipantI don’t understand how they can go out shopping for players without knowing exactly what they have and need on the current roster. I think you deplete the Roster around trade deadline by trading or waiving Jr. Smith, Bargnani, Stoudemire and possibly Calderon and Dalembert and just play out the season and see what sticks.
I don’t even see that as tanking because Smith and Stat play so bad at times especially defensively it is addition from subtraction. By doing this the Knicks can properly assess their longterm needs.
