Last year at picks 36 and 37 sam young and dejaun blair were picked. At 39 Jerebko was picked. At 43 marcus thornton. was picked. At 44 Chase Budinger was picked. These are 5 high value guys all selected around where the knicks are picking. The advantage of the position the knicks are picking in is that there are still some guys who were supposed to be first round picks, are still available. I think a couple of guys that have a very good chance at being available then who are very good players are willie warren and lance stephenson. I think they fit the Knicks needs and will be able to contribute right away. Name guys who you think will be available then and will be contributors to the knicks

Finding guys who can make a rotation and play a supporting role is not difficult. The problem is finding the difference makers to make an awful team like the Knicks decent to good. The 2nd round is not going to fill that massive need. The large uncertainties of who the 4th-15th men on the roster will be supporting makes taking those draft picks all the more difficult. It is a lot easier for teams with a core and a system to fill needs than a team shooting aimlessly into the dark.

If a skilled player drops, they’ll probably take a chance on him. Not knowing how everything will play out, I tend to believe it is safe to guess that they’ll take a shot on a point with one of the picks. The free agent market at that spot in almost non-existent. I’ve gone back-and-forth with the typical names and right now pegged Denis Clemente. He had a good workout in NY, likes pushing the ball, handles the pick-and-roll decently, and is a brighter player than is often given credit for.

Well if the Knicks plan works out and they get 2 maxes (if it doesn’t their screwed either way and a first rounder wont change much) they will need a lot of role players because their roster is pretty bare. With 4 active players now, 2 maxes or close to max, 2 veterans minimum (for example) they still need a good draft to round out the depth with the 7th, 8th, 9th man type of players. Luckily for the Knicks the 2nd round is perfect for finding that.

Okay, but the 2nd round is not perfect for that. They can just as capable talents in the NBDL, Europe, and minimum free agent pool with the added benefit of knowing who will be their feature guys. It isn’t like Jerebko, Blair, or Budinger were so remarkable that their contributions could not be matched by a minimal free agent signing. How did Phoenix do filling out their rotation with Channing Frye and Lou Amundson? Do you want to weigh the value of Blair to San Antonio versus that of Amundson to Phoenix? It is really grasping at straws.

If the Knicks think they will come away with two max players and make some kind of run towards relevance, then they would rather not have the back half of their roster not be green 20-22 year old rookies. D’Antoni didn’t want to play Jordan Hill, what chance does a second round pick have? I do think they’ll look to buy into the first round. It wouldn’t surprise me if they go after a first to get Bledsoe, but that would be to get a point guard prior to a summer where there really are not going to be that many of them available.

I agree with you but I feel like they need a mix of everything… If the whole free agency thing works out for them I would like to see them sign players like Kurt Thomas, Eddie House etc. for minimums but then also try to add players like Brackins, Stephenson, Warren, Bledsoe etc by buying into the first round and using 2nd rounders wisely, I really feel like this draft is very deep and has a lot of late first round talent in the 2nd round.

Plus I really just think Jordan Hill was a big mistake and a bust. Watching him play made me cringe how lost and uncoordinated he looked out there. He had the worst hands, was allergic to the paint, played wayy to fast and just looked incredibly uncomfortable out there. Toney Douglas on the other hand was the 29th pick in the draft and got significant minutes the 2nd half of the season.

I also feel like the draft can help convince the stars that the Knicks have some depth. I know its not much but any two out of stephenson, brackins, warren, bledsoe make the team slightly more attractive.

No free agent is going to give two thoughts of Stephenson, Brackins, Warren, Bledsoe, or any other mid-late draft rookie. Remember what Kobe Bryant thought of Andrew Bynum in 2006 and 2007? LeBron didn’t want to make his playoff run with J.J. Hickson, he wanted Amare or Jamison. This is how every single veteran views rookies and kids who have proven nothing.

AND 2 2nd ROUND PICKS WILL NOT MAKE THEM MORE ATTRACTIVE TO A FREE AGENT…

Thats also true, it would just be nice to have more than 4 active players on the roster lol
I am kind of hopefully that (somehow not sure how yet) Knicks can pull off a trade on draft night involving Curry (probably have to involve chandler and save some team A LOT of money) that would help add talent to this team heading into free agency.
