UnbiasedObserverParticipantThis would be a huge get for the Kings if they could somehow nab him. He is clearly the best option out there besides Thibs it looks like he wants the Timberwolves job.
The Kings desperately need a solid coach that will stick around for more than a year and show some semblance of stability.

XYRYXParticipantI would be really surprised if he considers them at all which doesn’t mean this interview might now be real.

Magic JordanParticipantHe’s trying to get his first interview out of the way before his big Lakers and Knicks interviews. Walton is a smart guy, no way he would pick the Kings as his first landing spot even though he acknowledges that he will have to go to a rebuilding situation. The Kings are the worst franchise in the league, this is nothing but a courtesy if there is any truth to it.

PurpleMonkeyDishwasherParticipantNothing good can come out of it if Walton accepts the Kings job. I feel sorry for Sacramento’s fans. Cousins is good player but has the makings of a coach killer and they don’t exactly have the strongest front office at this point. I see whoever takes the job as being setup for failure. Walton will say no. I think his dad would kick his a$$ if he even considered it.

MopgrassParticipantSacramento leads the league in most coaches over the past 5 years (if memory serves). Yes, Cousins is coach-toxic, but so is their owner. The owner clearly sides with Cousins and completely undermines the coach. Coaching the Kings is a death sentence, despite some talent on their roster.
As for Walton, I’m certain he’ll rock the X’s and O’s, but he’s totally untested in the locker room. Was he in charge in Golden State? Yes, but he was already in a great, established locker room where the guys buy into a team atmosphere. Like San Antonio, GS is not full of guys who are prima donnas who think they’re better than they are. A real test will be when Walton inherits a Cousins, a Howard, or even a Nick Young. Whoever from wherever he goes. I’m not saying he won’t be good at the locker room part, I’m saying he looks like a little boy and him being tough with someone would surprise me.

Hype MachineWalton will use the Kings job as leverage for the Lakers. Just showing up in Sacto adds another million, and NYC adds 2 more.
I know how this works after being headhunted by multiple billion dollar corporations myself. I was once a highly regarded fruit-picker during the great baked-pie boom of 1993.

wonzi_bellsParticipantI hope his daddy walks into the middle of the interview and drags him out by his ear, "What did I tell you Luke? We Waltons only surround ourselves with good basketball! GOOD!!!

HitsterParticipantIf the Kings could get Luke then it would be a major coup. I fully agree that Lakers and Knicks are more likely destinations for him. Having a meeting with the Kings does neither side no harm and as said above it gives Luke leverage. I would not even say leverage over salary as Luke had a decent playing career and is a well paid assistant before you even consider he was from a wealthy family.
I’d say it may be more leverage over having a say over Front Office moves, coaching personnel etc. If Luke said to the Kings I’d consider the job much more if I became VP Basketball Operations too then they may well be prepared to agree to it. Luke could then go to Lakers or Knicks and say I was offered this much power at the Kings. He wouldn’t get the same FO control of either Lakers or Spurs but might have an agreement he gets it in due course say when Phil retired or at least get more say in signings/drafts etc.

phila9012ParticipantI think Walton would be a great fit for the lakers and lakers would be a great fit for walton. They have time to develop, so that would give him at least 1 to 2 years of just focusing on developing players and learning as a coach. Also Walton has experience playing for the Lakers, so he knows the pressure and the environment. I think in cities like New York and LA, just being able to handle the media pressure is important. Thibs can get away with a lot more in Minnesota with out anyone caring or say something bad and not get hammered by the media. Walton seems like a guy made to coach the lakers. No way he does anything for the Kings. I am surprised people still want to interview for the job. Nobody leaves the kings looking better than when they got there especially their coaches.
