Can someone please help me understand why the Kings would still be showing interest in Smith, are they trying to get him at a below market value…?

Josh Smith sort of offers what the Kings need at the PF spot with his shot blocking.  Smith is also an above average passer.  I would assume Derrick Williams would be the primary piece in the trade, along with some garbage contracts the Kings always seem to have.  I always thought Williams would be better, and I think he would be an ok fit as a stretch four off the bench for the Pistons.  The Pistons would prefer Monroe long term over Smith, I hope the trade happens.

I hope the trade happens as well because, like you said, Smith offers what the Kings need at the four spot. Smith’s best years came playing alongside Al Horford in Atlanta, whose skill set is similar to DeMarcus Cousins, so it is not out of the realm to think that the fit would work nicely.

Smith is a versatile defender at his position, as he can guard post up and stretch fours alike, defend the P&R as the screener’s man and as a weakside defender/shotblocker, and guard 3’s on the wing if need be. Offensively, his limitations as a shooter are well chronicled, yet he can attack off the wing and create in the half court due to his ballhandling and passing ability (almost as a point-forward, similar to Lamar Odom in his prime).

If I were the Kings I think I would make this trade, despite the risks involved. The fit on the defensive end seems like it should work very well and, if Mike Malone watches some old tape of Smith’s and Horford’s Hawks days together, has the potential to work offensively/in the half court with DeMarcus. His athleticism will allow them to play fast when need be, as he can lead and finish the fast break. If the Kings need more floor spacing, simply sub out Smith and move Rudy Gay to the 4 and play McLemore and Stauskis on the wings. If the experiment fails, suck it up for the season and look to move him to a contender, as he will have 2 years left on his contract and a cap number that won’t be so terrible if the cap increases as expected. There is risk involved, absolutely, but if the move works the Kings may find themselves in playoff contention sooner rather than later (has anyone used the words “Kings” and “playoff contention” in the same sentence since 2002 while talking about the NBA?).

    Hofstrapride25 I agree completely.

The only way for the Kings to become good and relevant again is to either A: Draft VERY well. (I.e. Demarcus Cousins) Or B: Take gambles on disgruntled veterans or stars and hope they play well with the talent that’s already established. (I.e. Rudy Gay and Josh Smith)

I actually hope the Kings do acquire Smith. He actually PLAYS DEFENSE, is a good fit next to Cousins. And last but not least ANYBODY is better than Jason Thompson. And I mean ANYBODY!

Good analysis guys and I agree, that Smith is a good fit there.

His contract still doesn’t look good but the Kings owe Thompson, Landry and Williams more than 6 million each next year while Terry gets also 5 mio.

Why not flip let’s say Williams (who doesn’t make any sense on this roster since Gay arrived) + Terry (who doesn’t want to be there) and Thompson/Landry into Smith? Smith may already be on the decline and has a lot of miles for a 29 year old but he plays defense and doesn’t have major injury problems. A move like this would leave the Kings with a very competetive roster for next year and even if it doesn’t pan out as expected, they have cap space next year depending on what they want to do with Gay.

I like this trade, maybe a pick goes to the Pistons as well or 3rd team (contender with the need for a veteran with an outside shot) takes Terry and gives a pick to the Pistons and this should work. Only problem could be that the Pistons don’t want to have Thompson or Landry. But Landry should be fine and a frontcourt of Drummond, Monroe, Landry and Williams should be better then what they have now.

is this still a rumor? I thought this died off awhile ago. Either way, I think its a great deal if Sac-Town can get J-Smooth for D-Will and some filler.

I don’t understand why so many people don’t like Josh Smith. Yes, his shot selection is questionable at times. But hes a shot-blocking, high energy, athletic PF/SF who doesn’t need the ball.

The main question for me is how will his personality fit with Cousins???

As for Derrick Williams, he’ll definitely be the Piston’s target. I agree his best chance at being relevant will be playing alongside a post player like Drummond and being a stretch four. I however see him as their starting pf as the future, if he improves, rather than Monroe. Seems as if the ship has sailed and Monroe is ready to leave either this year or next Summer.

if they get smith  I wouldn’t want to give up much  derrick smith and another contract no picks  because smith and the logjam  doesn’t equal a first rounder.

Rajon rondo is the target  I wonder what they could package to get  a rondo

    Demarcus

    Smith

    gay

    ?

    Rondo

is a odd line up for sure but we seen smith work well with a offensive big in horford and we seen rondo win a ship and put up  big assit numbers on the  current cletic roster that’s  A TASK  he has knack for making players better.

No ones coming to sac any other way  unless trade and they have landry and Thompson on horrible deals.

It would love to see them become  the upset team in the west how Memphis use to be .  not good enough for a high seed but competitive enough that teams fear playing them as the 8th seed.

    they should have kept Thomas.

I’ve been arguing with my buddy about Smoove goin to Sacramento since midway thru the season. I would of traded him for Rudy Gay. The Pistons could of kept Monroe and had the natural 3 they may be missing. if they could get B.Jennings to play at all like a point guard they could be a decent team in the east.
