TarHeelRavenParticipantReading everything about Dwight Howard’s move to Houston and people’s posts on Dwight Howard have really got me thinking about the coddling that today’s basketball players have gotten caught up in. Dwight Howard might be one of the most physically gifted athletes of all time as well as one of the most mentally weak ones. Simply put, Dwight Howard was not coddled at all in Los Angeles like he was in Orlando and Kobe Bryant called him out on his mental weaknesses in every way imaginable. Dwight couldn’t handle the LA spotlight in my opinion in large part due to him just being mentally weak. Athletes these days due to AAU play, agents, coaches and people telling young athletic phenoms from day one how great they are do not have the tough mental capacity to succeed at the highest level. Kids today are faster, stronger, quicker and more athletic than they have ever been. It takes a lot more than physical gifts to succeed at the highest level and our society has given rise to a generation of mentally weak basketball players. Jordan was the greatest because he was not only the most physically gifted, but also the most mentally gifted as well. Is there a way to help kids today become more mentally strong?

Sewok15ParticipantI don’t think Howard left LA because he couldn’t handle the spotlight…I just don’t think he liked Kobe and D’Antoni as a coach. He picked a better situation in Houston with more young talent and a better coach. You can say he is mentally weak but even in a bad year where he was dealing with injuries he was still easily a top 3 center in the league.
He took an Orlando team with nothing to the Finals at age 23. He clearly handled his impending free agency and the “Dwightmare” saga like an idiot but I don’t know that means he is mentally weak on the court. He got some bad advice and was very indecisive as well over that period. Now that he is on a good team and secure I would expect a lot of good things from him going forward.

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantYou act like this is a trend. MJ and Kobe have killer instinct, not everyone is capable of that, but I’m not sure that’s being “mentally strong”. Look at all the ‘kids’ nearing the NBA and in the NBA and you say they’re becoming mentally weak? Wiggins, Parker, etc.. None of them have I noticed anything weak about their mindset. Look at how D Rose handled the pressure of returning when he wasn’t ready? He ignored the media and kept working every day and wasn’t even affected by the constant criticism.
