Who has the better squad? Who would win and what would the score be?  Also if you pick the Fab Five and Kentucky wins tonight would Kentucky automatically be rated better then the Fab 5?

Michigan would have beat them 10 times out of 10.

The Fab 5 absolutely would’ve steamrolled this team.

As big as they are, they still have no shot stopping Michigan’s big guys.

That Michigan crew were fearless and a better passing team, they played great together, something this Kentucky team struggled to do most of the season..I might be wrong, but i believe each of the Fab 5 averaged 2 or more assists..

But coming in as freshmen, the Fab 5 didnt have the high expectations that was placed on this Kentucky team….People were talking about 40-0….Webber and company played with a chip on their shoulders, becuz nobody thought they would amount to much or go that far..They would have no problem beating this Kentucky team….

This is a great question.  I think that Chris Webber is better than anyone on the current Kentucky Wildcats team.  Jalen Rose was good, but these Harrison Twins have been pretty effective.  James Young is a stud who can score, hit 3’s, and create his own shot.  Back in the day, Juwan Howard was a gamer, but come on, Dakari Johnson is HUGE.  … the other freshman — Marcus Lee — is a freak too.

That Fab Five team might have had more talent at the top with C Webb, or the rest of the Big Three with Howard and Rose, but Jimmy King and Ray Jackson are largely forgotten.  I am not even sure what they were good at.

This Kentucky team is comparable.  If they win, you have to give them credit beating a very good and well rounded UConn squad with a killer in Shabazz Napier and some silent assassins in Daniels and Giffey.

I think that this Kentucky team is even Bigger and LONGER than the Fab Five.  You could call this team (I would even throw Marcus Lee in there) as the LAW FIRM:  Harrison, Harrison, Young, Randle, Johnson, and Lee.  6’5 guards and freakish size inside that could probably give the Sixers problems.

I never bought totally into the Randle-C Webb comparisons but I am warming up to Randle and I already liked him.  He is a beast inside who can score and rebound.  He has a bit of that jab step jumper a la Zach Randolph and he hits his free throws.  He can also handle the ball.  I think he is a leader who brings intensity AND composure to the court.  He’s a no nonsense guy out there.  What I love, in this tournament so far, Randle hasn’t tried to do too much.

I didn’t watch the Fab Five their first year.  All I remember is that title game in their second season against UNC.  This Kentucky team looks as good as that Fab Five/Super Soph team.

… watching those Fab Five documentaries, it looks like the Fab Five freshman were helped out in the tourney by some veteran shooters and then Eric Riley on the inside.  This Kentucky team does have Poythress who has really done a good job, and did have WCS until recently, but they don’t have veteran shooters, or even guys who can create their own shots, outside the freshman.  So, in some ways this Kentucky team is more impressive.  Now with WCS out, Poythress is the only "veteran" factor for the Wildcats in their 7 man rotation, and he is a sophomore.  The creativity, passing, shooting, ball handling, and play making is 100% on the freshman.

The Fab Five is great, but they didn’t win a title.  They did change the game though.  They were a ground breaking team.  That team personified that generation.  This current Kentucky team is run by Mister Recruiter in Coach Cal, and is made up of a bunch of supposedly "one and done" guys.  This might be the closest we get to the Fab Five.  And, if Kentucky wins tonight, they will do something that the Michigan team never did.

C’mon now.  Chris Webber and Jalen Rose had enough talent to beat this whole Kentucky squad in a 2 on 5 handicap game.  No comparison !!!

Then why couldn’t C Webb and Rose beat Eric Montross, George Lynch, Donald Williams, and a bunch of 3 star stiffs?  And that team that played UNC was made up of SOPHOMORES.

This Kentucky team might have more 3 point shooting with Aaron Harrison and James Young.  Randle and Dakari/Lee are also a bit bigger, longer inside than C Webb and Howard.

Would be a great matchup though!  Very comparable squads.

I don’t know if Julius Randle is as versatile as Chris Webber, but Randle can play with anybody.

Webber made that one dumb mistake by calling that time out and it wound up costing the FAB 5 that game, but that’s not something that should be faulted on that squad as not being a championship caliber squad.   In fact the reason this Kentucky group has gone this deep is coz of the Twins’ last-minute LUCKY shot.  It could have gone either way and they wouldn’t be here celebrating had those 3 pointers not gone through.  Just like if Webber didn’t call that time out mistake,  then it might’ve been a different story.   We all know that pound for pound,  talent for talent,  that Fab 5 group would’ve turned this Kentucky group into ashes to ashes, and dust to dust, barring any last minute lucky shot from Aaron Harrison again.

its tough for people to compare because everybody is already aware on how Webber,Rose, and Howard’s NBA career turned out. so they take that into account when talking about this. which shouldnt be the case, but its tough to get it out your mind.

if UK wins the title, Randle turns into a fringe HOF’er like Webber, Young turns into the scorer Rose was, one of their big men ( Dakari Johnson, WCS, Lee) turn into a impact player in the NBA, and one of the twins turns into a good NBA player.. than people might come around and think " hey, maybe this was better than the fab 5 "

Talent-wise, this isn’t even close. Whilst Kentucky have more depth of talent, the level of talent at Michigan outclasses them.

Randle’s absolute ceiling is Webber’s career & Webber’s career was considered a disappointment based on his college career / early NBA days. Bear in mind that his peak was 27ppg, 13rpg & 5.4apg & his career average was 21ppg, 10rpg & 4apg, with 1x All-NBA, 3x NBA 2nd Team & 1x NBA 3rd Team (yet somehow only 4 all-star appearances?). He was bigger, stronger, more-skilled and equally relentless when he started, before starting to settle for the mid-range jumper once injuries set in. Statistically they’re fairly close, bar assists, but Webber had Howard alongside him.

Jalen Rose over James Young. Again, not even close. Rose is essentially Anderson and whilst Slo-Mo has athleticism issues, as a player he’s one of the best in the NCAA. Rose & King (27.5ppg 7.6rpg 6.3apg) outmatch Young & Andrew Harrison (25.1ppg 7.5rpg 5.6apg)

Juwan Howard was the 5th pick in a draft featuring Jason Kidd & Grant Hill. He is essentially the player that teams hope Vonleh will turn into if he bulks up and continues to improve his post-game. Arguable HOF’er vs underdeveloped big hoping to be picked mid-first round?

Only Ray Jackson never saw any time in the NBA, but the difference in the front-court is so colossal that any back-court deficiencies can be overlooked. Yes Aaron Harrison is better than him, but Jackson also had future NBA player Eric Riley. Not that the Harrison twins are necessarily a better combination, even if they probably edge King/Jackson in individual talent. King average 15ppg his senior year and Jackson 16ppg, so they were no scrubs.

    Marcus Lee 24 6.3 2.5 1.5 0.1 0.0 0.6 0.2 .619 .438 .000

Basically it boils down to this. 1 great player, 2 v.good NBA players, 1 borderline NBA players and a serviceable NCAA player, or 1 v.good player, 4 NBA rotation guys & 3 possible NBA players (if they were to declare this year).

Down the line the overall talent at Kentucky may be better, but Johnson, Lee & Poythress aren’t there yet.

Small correction; C-Webb had 5 All-Star appearances, and it would most certainly have been 6 but there was no All-Star game in 1999 (when he was second team All-NBA) because of the lockout shortened season.

The first Final Four I ever really watched was the 1993 Final Four with UNC beating Michigan for the title.  Yeah, Webber played great and the game went down to the wire, but those Fab Fivers were SOPHOMORES that year.  If Kentucky wins the title against a really good UConn team you have to give them credit.  As freshman, the Fab Five got blown out by Duke in the title game.  So its hard to compare C Webb vs. UNC to the current FRESHMAN Kentucky squad.

And Randle is doing this NOW.  Julius Randle would have KILLED in 1993.  Webber was a guy up for the top pick in the draft (which he was, then got traded to Golden State), and I think the same thing should happen this year with Randle being in consideration for the top pick.

Johnson and Lee are showing me a lot.  Why can’t these guys be really solid NBA players?  Maybe an all-star appearance thrown in?

Jalen Rose was really, really good.  Not an all-star though.  I think the Harrisons or James Young could one day develop into an all-star.

So the Fab Five had two all-stars in Webber and Howard with a total of 6 All-Star game selections between them.  I think this current crop of Kentucky freshman can get two all-stars and at least 6 all-star game selections.  C Webb was selected five times.  I think Julius Randle can get there.

Right now with WCS out, the Wildcats play about 7 guys with 6 being freshman (Poythress is a sophomore).  So outside of chip shots, dunks, and rebounds from Poythress (I am not discounting him though), the Kentucky freshman have given them ALL their production.  Supposedly the first Michigan Fab Five team got some timely scoring from some upper classman plus they also had a fringe NBA player at center.  This Kentucky team doesn’t have that.  Right now, its just the young guns for the Wildcats.

Yes, I take the Fab Five because their top 3 guys. Rose, Weber, and Howard were college stars. Randle is a college star. The other guys rotate nights to be the star.  It’s just that Randle is the only one who’s almost always on.

Having said that, this year, Randle, Young, Cauley-Stein, Harrison 1, Harrison 2 could all possibly go in the 1st round. Maybe.

Next year, Poythress, Lee, and  Dakari could go in the 1st round. Maybe.

That would make 8 first rounders on one team. I don’t think it will happen, but it’s humanly possible. Anything close would be historic.

    In a tournament game, you really can’t tell when the talent level is good enough. Upsets happen all the time. If I had to bet on it, I would say the Michigan Fab 5 teams, and either of them. The biggest reason is the competition… and please let me elaborate;

The Fab 5 weren’t in the “One and done” era. As freshman, and then sophomores they came very close against not teams with one and dones, but rather teams that had players talented enough to be one and dones such as Grant Hill, Mashburn, Shaq-the list goes on- as seasoned college players with the best of the class of the competition are staying in school. The smaller schools today compete more with the one and done teams because they are seasoned. Imagine if this Kentucky unit stayed together til’ they were juniors?

Ultimately both teams are special, anything can happen, but Fab 5 seems more logical.
