OhCanada-ParticipantIm gonna make a bold statement and say Kawhi Leonard gets offered the max in next years offseason if he does not ink an extension with San Antonio. Alot of teams will have cap space and improving rosters ready to flip the switch and start winning.
Next years free agent pool is not nearly as deep as this years. Leonard could be percieved as a top 5 free agent behind, Aldridge, Love and Gasol. He definitely has the credentials but maybe not the stats.
With tons of teams with cash I bet someone offerers him the max. Does San Antonio match? Would you?

he_gets_bucketsParticipantI highly doubt that an extension isn’t signed this summer, but if it isn’t, I think Spurs match the max offer instantly. Duncan only has a season left on his 10 mil contract, and I would imagine that unless the Spurs repeat he’ll strongly consider hanging them up, that gives them the space both roster wise and cap wise for Kawhi to be a star along side Tony Parker.

ibe12ParticipantI agree as well. He’s a nice player but I’d rather see what he could do when he’s the second option instead of the third or fourth before giving him a max deal. Unfortunately so many players he is better than will probably get close to max so he’ll get it as well.

TRC1991ParticipantIf players like Gordon Hayward are being mentioned in the phrase "max contract" than Kawhi Leonard deserves a max contract…Gordon Hayward is a $9mil a year type player…But overpaying slightly above average players has become a mindless trend amongst overly-ambitious and under-smart GM’s

Chilbert arenasParticipantJust because Hayward being mentioned in the talks of "max" does not mean Kawhi would be worth it. No one on these boards thinks Gordon is worth the max.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantif they wanted. Wiggins/Parker/Embiid may have more potential but neither one will be better than Leonard for the next four years. The Cavs would have jumped on it in a heart beat and still would. I suggested they trade the pick for Leonard the moment they got it.
Only way he doesn’t get max is if he wants the 5 yar max, I mean he has done more in the League than John Wall, Paul George and Kyrie Irving. Kyrie as All Star game MVP and Kawhi was NBA Championship MVP.
Harden left OKC’s deal of 56 for 4 years to go make 80 for 5 years, Kawhi could do the same.

ShwiggydogParticipantThe thing is, he would have to sign the max offer sheet if a team were to give it to him. I think the Spurs culture has rubbed off on him and he’s more focused on winning than getting a few more millions.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantHe could sign a deal now only if San Antonio offered other teams can’t get involved until next year.

thparadoxParticipantLeonard is easily worth the max:
1) hyperefficient all round numbers. has potential in practically every basketball skill.
2) excels when his shot volume and playing time are increased. (small sample size, but still)
3) great defender. in particular, he can defend Lebron (better than almost any other player)
4) clutch.
5) can dominate over the course of a playoff series e.g. Finals mvp
6) entering his age 23 season (will be entering age 24 season)

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantThere are at least ten teams that would offer him the 5 year 80 million dollar early extension.

XYRYXParticipantAn interesting question but for sure the Spurs will silently extend him next season. Pop already said multiple time in the finals and after that Kawhi is the future of this team and will have an increased offensive role too.
btw there have been discussions (excuses) about players who have to carry the main load of the offense and are allowed to rest on the defensive end like Harden or Kyrie and still are viewed as good all around players. Kawhi is the complete difference as he is doing as much as he can defensively and still handling the ball alot penetrating, going in and out to find a cutting teammate or a shooter. I see absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t sniff 20 ppg next year playing 33 mpg and still be an elite defender.
I have absolutely no doubt the Spurs will extend him to a max deal without a hesitation and without all the media rumors like PG or Kyrie if they ink a new contract. Perfect fit for his team imo and still so much upside left with him.

mixtape2003ParticipantHe is worth the max, his numbers would be better if they actually ran plays for him, he got finals MVP and Pop even said he didn’t run a single play for him.

313LOUDParticipantSo some of you are saying…..let me get this right….that the 22 year old NBA finals MVP, that coach Pop LOVES is not worth 15-17 million a year over the next 5….? The big three are old…..they need and will pay him with no doubt…..

HitsterParticipantIn reply to Oh Canada’s question – yes the Spurs would match as a 4 year max offer from another team would not be as much as the max deal the Spurs could give him so in their eyes it isn’t a max deal and they will have huge cap space next summer anyway.
I agree with the thoughts that if Hayward is worth $15/16 million a year then Leonard certainly is.
Plus can anyone really see a shrewd franchise like the Spurs not extending Leonard this summer, they have their 5 year rookie deal to use so using it on Leonard is a no brainer. Will it be a max deal, no I don’t think so, the Spurs will want to keep a bit back but an opening offer of $70 million over 5 years would be very hard to turn down and they have room to increase it if needed to convince him to sign.

TallmanNYCParticipantHere is the deal. There are 30 teams in the league. The best teams should probably have two or three guys on Max contracts. The worse teams maybe one or none. And the teams in the middle one or two guys. Maybe closer to one. There are few guys, who are clear Max guys, but their rookie contract isn’t over. The Brow is an example. He’s just a Max guy in waiting.
So there are going to be a lot of max contracts in the leage. 40 or 50 at any one time. Just because you might think there are 20 guys better than Kwahi, doean’t mean he isn’t worth the max.
