ACC Player of the Year, but let’s be honest, Luke Kennard was the BEST player in the ACC this year.  Take him off that Duke team and I doubt Duke gets to .500 in league play.  I assume Justin got the nod because Carolina was better than Duke and took the ACC regular season title.  I’m guessing he goes pro after this year and goes anywhere between 20 and 30.  Solid athlete, not spectacular, worked hard to become a good three point shooter, skinny, lacks strength, moves well witihout the ball, not an advanced handle, but a good straight line driver, good floater and mid-range game.  Any NBA comparisons for this guy?

Perhaps a weaker/less athletic Caron Butler, or Eddie Johnson.

I’ve heard some people mention Rudy Gay as well.

Luke was the better player but the award always awards winning. That’s why I think Harden is gonna with MVP this year over Westbroo.

Also Rudy Gay was an explosive athlete, Justin Jackson has a slow first step and not really explosive. Outside of 3 point shooting and throwing up a floater he’s really limited on offense, sometimes he plays too much hero ball but he can be a decent bench player. Just needs to keep his 3s consistent and work on his defense. Maybe get bigger if possible so he can play the stretch 4 but I don’t think his frame will let him do that.

Jackson reminds me of Austin Daye and although he didn’t succeed in the NBA that isn’t suppose to be a knock on Jackson as I feel Daye’s game would be better suited in today’s NBA.

I think he can be a nice back-up wing at his peak or could be out of the league early, but he is starting to show that he is really getting it at the college level.

Body reminds me of Tayshaun Prince, though his shot is better than Princes at the same time and Prince was probably the better defender. Apart from that, very similar body types, both average handle, good line drivers, average/slightly above average athletes, lots of intangibles, very hard workers.

The argument for Jackson probably came down to best player on the best team.  Was Jackson actually the most valuable to his team though. Idk. Kennard, bonzi colson and John Collins were all at least in the discussion. If I had to choose I’d probably go with colson. However, Jackson did have a tremendous year and was arguably one of the most improved players in the country.

I had questions about Jackson as an NBA prospect before this year but I have few doubts now he’ll be at least a solid pro. The improvement in his shooting has been huge and his confidence level is night and day from last season. He seems like a spurs type of pick if he winds up lasting that long ( which I don’t think he will). Can’t really think of a perfect comparison for him. I see him as kind of mix between tayshaun prince and Danny Green if that makes any sense.

Rudy Gays talent and athletisism is just at a different level then most players and Jackson is no exception. I wanna say Mike Dunleavy Jr. but his all around game was and is way more refined. The obvious comparisons would be Austin Daye and Deandre Daniels but these dont add up for me. Both of those players had a tendacy to shy away from contact and while Jackson may not be a bruiser he has done a good job adding weight to his body and working on his slashing game.

He is also doing a better job distributing this year but still leaves alot to be desired. He also doesnt give much effort rebounding and while he is defenitely a SF at 6’8/6’9 200 pounds the team that drafts him may want to think of him as a shooting gaurd feom a tendency point of view.

Yea I like that Dunleavy Jr. comparison. Though you’re right Dunleavy was the better playmaker at the same age but they play similar.

Like I said, much similar I see him to Matt Barnes, and at the very best if he works really hard he could be like Demmare Carroll… and I also would choose Kennard with his unique 20ppg 50fg% season, I see him similar to Allen Crab in the pros…

Body wise he looks like Tayshaun Price minus the length being thin and the hunched shoulders. Game wise I agree with the Matt Barnes but with tremendous baskeball IQ. Justin Jackson is gonna be a really good pro and have himself a long career. His career trajectory is gonna be like Mike Dunleavy Jr. He’s just a kid that is very coachable and great work ethic. The best thing about him though is his incredible IQ. I know it’s cliche but this kid just has a nose for the ball and gets buckets. Remember when he was co MVP of the McD game with Jahlil. JJ was all over the place and got buckets in every way. Freshman year, soph, up to now his improvement has been leaps and bounds. Good shooter, good slasher, good passer and he still can get better while filling out that thin physique. Here’s a bonus, go youtube that game between him and Luke Kennard in high school. Nice foreshadowing of this season. They both had a great game and similar stats but Jackson got the win.

I actually heard at least a year ago now that both the Van Gundys both really rate him. I understand that he is on Detroits radar if they get a pick in the 13-18 range. Im not saying thats who I think best fits or they should pick, but apparently he is considered to be someone that can have a long career in the NBA as a role player.

     I like the Dunleavy comp.

To those saying Kennard was a far better player…that’s simply not true.

Kennard might’ve been more valuable to his team given Duke’s myriad issues but it’s not like Jackson wasn’t outstanding all year. He’s the only consistent player (until last week) UNC has and the Heels played with Berry, Kenny Williams, Pinson and Hicks at different points in the year. Jackson is one of the few shot-creators on that team and he’s a much better defender than Kennard.

It’s a different award than in the NBA. It’s "Player of the Year" not "most valuable player"
