Anton123ParticipantSo, with the world cup over and nothing really going on, I was thinking this: could the Yugoslavian national team (if the country existed) – battle USA?
FYI Yugoslavia consisted of Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovinia, Macedonia and Montenegro.
Looking at the rosters – yuo see that there’s an immense pool of talent in these teams together. I tried putting together the Yugoslavian roster and here’s what I got:
PG G. Dragic (M. Teodosic, Bo McCalleb)
SG Z. Dragic (Bog. Bogdanovic)
SF Boj. Bogdanovic (D. Lorbek)
PF M. Teletovic (N. Bjelica, D. Saric)
C N. Vucevic (N. Pekovic, A. Tomic)Those who didn’t make the cut (but are available if injuries occur): M. Radjulica, N. Kristic, S. Markovic, D. Rudez, P. Antic
Young prospects: J. Nurkic, M. Hezonja, D. Bender, M. Arapovic, N. Jokic
Now, I think this roster could make a game with absolutely any team extremely competetive. The team has terrific shooters combined with guys who can work inside (Pekovic and Vucevic) and guys who can drive inside (the Dragic brothers, Saric).
The team also has amazing talent on the horizon with guys that have NBA all-star potential.
Basically, I think a team doesn’t need to have an all-star at every position to play great basketball, if this team could play as a cohesive unit – I think they could very well battle USA even if USA had LeBron, Durant and etc. Not saying they would win – they would make it interesting, especially with international rules favouring the Yugoslavian roster (Pekovic could just stay in the paint).
P.S. I chose Tomic over Radjulica because I think Ante brings something to the table that Pekovic and Vucevic don’t, while Radjulica is very similar to Pekovic in playing style.

King CaluchaParticipantIt looks good. However… Lorbek is more of an inside player than either Saric or Teletovic. He’s 100% a PF.

Anton123ParticipantI was talking about younger Lorbek – Domen (starting SG for the Slovenian team), I actually completely forgot about Erazem, he should be on the list of those who didnt make the cut but could contribute.

GronounoursParticipantYougoslavia is gone and won’t come back.
You could as well ask what an Austro-Hungarian, or a Kievan Rus team would look like.

Anton123ParticipantI absolutely understand that, however, I don’t see any problem in creating a hypothetical Austro-Hungarian team or USSR team just for fun.

ExumInfernoParticipantThat was fun, although I would start the two giant centers Pekovic and Vucevic, and grind teams into the ground in the paint and then have three shooters on the floor with them. E Lorbek really should be in the NBA, maybe next year, teams could use his size.
USSR, West Germany and East Germany, there would be other teams to create a roster for that are not around now.
A team with two players called Dragic and two called Bogdanovic on the floor at the same time, plus a center, that might confuse the other team.

B EazyParticipantIf the United States took over the world what would their team…jk.
Definitely some talent in that region. With teams like Argentina, Greece, and Spain aging, it seems as though those Yugoslavian countries will be on the rise. Not to mention Canada and Australia coming up as well.
Also keep an eye out for Dennis Rodman and them North Koreans……………

trelos6ParticipantI posted the same article idea last Friday but in International forum. Good to see no-one reads that forum!

McDunkinYeah man that’s been a problem for years here. The nba draft forum is pretty much the only used/looked at forum out of the bunch which has always bothered me because there have been many threads that go unnoticed from either being ignored or pushed off the 1st page too quickly.
The rest of the forums are pretty much the red headed stepchild around here.

DolanCareParticipantI was thinking the same thing. And they don’t even need to call it Team Yugoslavia, which is a politically charged title. It could be Team Balkans.
It actually makes sense since the USA is a massive country while all Balkan states are smaller than Kansas.
