I read a report that the sixers won’t let Okafor, towns or Russell fall to the knicks. The problem I see is if Okafor is there at 3, the sixers will take him knowing they have 2 centers already and a HUGE need at the guard position. Are they playing to win or they playing to keep the knicks from winning or improving? The best option for the sixers is to take someone who can shoot the ball, someone with a decent mid range jumper or 3 point shot. Okafor does not fill that need. I just don’t get this team. I am a bit bias as a Knick fan because I want Okafor, but feels like the sixers are doing themseleves an injustice by simply taking a player at a position that is already stacked so another team won’t get them.

But I could see Philly drafting Okafor and then trading him, like they did with Elfrid Payton.  If NYK really wants Okafor, Philly could make them trade for him.

Its called taking the best player available regardless of need, and getting other assets if you can.

It’s not really hard to understand unless you are a fan (like me 5 plus years ago) who is addicted to “mock drafts”. Hinkie wants the best, highest upside player available whenever he picks period. I think they will try and get a second pick in order to land Russell or Mudiay, but the point remains: Hinkieism=Drafting for upside/star power, instead of fit first.

Here is how I see It,

If the Wolves take Towns, the Lakers take Okafor, and we trade Russell for Hezonja and a PG or future 1st round pick(Kings, Nuggets, Pistons, Hornets or Pacers could be in position to select Hezonja and include a Pg or Pick, Collison, Lawson, Jennings, Walker or Hill)

The 76ers are taking the BPA and may very well trade him for a nice hual if they get Hezonja and some assets back in the deal…

The Sixers very well may have the top three players ranked like this and will take whomever is left at 3. My guess is that they probably do.

However, what is certain is that they wouldn’t leak the truth. So, if they DID leak this, then it isn’t the truth, and if they didn’t leak this then the reporter is lying.

So, let’s assume for a second that they did leak this and it isn’t the truth. Let’s assume that the truth is that they want Russell, but wouldn’t take Okafor 3rd if the Lakers took Russell. They would be doing it to make the Knicks more likely to try to trade up with LA if they wanted to make sure that they could get Okafor, thus leaving Russell to the Sixers, who is clearly the best fit.

If the Knicks knew that the Sixers wouldn’t take Okafor, then they have less reason to trade with LA, or the Sixers for that matter.

Sam Hinkie will never let people know what he is thinking and that is a stone cold fact.

So take any reports supposedly saying what the Sixers are thinking with a grain of salt.

We won’t know what the Sixers are doing until draft night. Keep in mind they have traded their first round picks for the last few years: see Elfrid Payton, Michael Carter Williams, Maurice Harkless, Nikola Vucevic, Evan Turner, Jrue Holiday.

Combined at the Power Forward and Center positions, only 22 players saw 30 minutes per game or more last season, with Anthony Davis getting the most at 36 MPG.

An average amount of playing time for a regular big man is likely closer to 25-32 minutes per game. And guess what. There are 96 minutes available each game at the Power Forward and Center positions. Divide that by 3 players (Embiid, Noel, and Okafor) and they each can get 32 each game. More realistically, they each get say 28-30 minutes a game, with the spare minutes going to a 4th big or maybe Saric getting some time at the 4.

You may be asking why the Sixers would do this. Well, the NBA has shown time and time again that when drafting (especially at or near the top) you pick the best player available and worry about how it works later. The 76ers can definitely rotate all three big men together. The question then becomes can they play together. Noel compliments both Embiid and Okafor, but Embiid and Okafor may be a little trickier for the 76ers. But if you could have the best big man in 2013 (Nerlens Noel was projected to go first overall by many), the best big man in 2014 (Joel Embiid), and arguably best big man, if not the second or third best in 2015 in Okafor, I think you go for it and worry about it later. They could even trade the draft rights for more pieces.

The 76ers will likely take a step forward next year. But I don’t think many are expecting them to win the title in 2016. They can afford to load up at PF/C now and just worry about the guards and wings later. I’m not necessarily endorsing this strategy, but it’s not the worst thing possible to have Embiid/Noel/Okafor.

I’m starting to think that I would rather see the Sixers draft Porzingis and then trade back up for Terry Rozier.  I want like five bigs in rotation and Rozier and Wroten in the backcourt.  Should be interesting while we wait for next years draft and free agency.

This whole thing is silly because I doubt the 76er care what the Knicks do at 4. They have the third pick and will take the best player available. What would really make this whole thing interesting though is if Porzingas goes 2 or 3…thats the only real potential shakeup that could make the top of the draft interesting.
