    My analysis

    1 leg
-more comfortable and natural when you are driving past someone and then finish all at full speed
-easier to get up higher because you ca now stretch that 1 arm all the way up
-easier to contort yourself and get around the D for an acrobatic lay-in or dunk
    2 legs
-better for finishing with contact against stronger players contesting your shot
    -provides more balance
-you can only jump off 2 after you use the hop-step or spin move

agree or disagree? which do you rather? any other advantages of either?

2 legs is a stronger base move. Post guys use it. I like 1 leg better because I jump higher off one leg, and it’s easier to make explosive play off 1.

For this topic. When I was in highschool I had tendinitis in my left knee(my jumping leg) and so most of my dunks were off of 2 feet. The reason more people can dunk off of one leg is because it stretches you out more. That’s why the vert test are stupid IMO. Good topic agree completely.

thanks, and yes vert. tests can be decieving and pretty nonsensical, but of course they do look good on paper if yours is high

yeah, a one leg jump you can get much higher not only because you can stretch yourself out, but you can use your non jumping leg and arms as added momentum on your take off. Just the simple movement of swinging your “off leg” up easily adds a couple inches to your overall jump.

I’m a 2 foot jumper. I used to think I got higher off 2 feet because it’s the only why I can dunk but I finnaly realized that it’s because I can’t palm a ball very well. I still prefer, probalby because of all those years of doing it, to jump off 2. I feel like I am stronger and can control the ball better when dunking or grabbing a rebound. Another thing about ne jumping off 1 foot is that I have pretty weak ankles so it makes me nervous as hell.

Who’s taking away points 4 people saying they can dunk?
I always had small hands in high school
and I had a weak left leg so I was always 2-footed myself 😉

actually you get higher off of 2 if you going by vertical test or drop step. you can take off from farther if you take off from one foot..so people cant jumpo high off of 2 and vice versa. one example is james white..cant really dunk on anyone off of 2 but he can take off off of one leg

I hear you, my post was based off physics, swinging your arms and legs does help you get higher, and I lost a point. Haha, oh well

think that physics/logic don’t exist eg 60 inch verticals 😉

i think 2 legs look more spectacular when you dunk but you discribed the advantages of 1 leg correctly….

I started jumping off of my left leg, but my knee starting hurt so… I learned to jump off two. Now, I can boom off the left leg, right leg or off of two feet. I say practice jumping every way, so you don’t wear your knee out by just jumping off your strong leg.

I played basketball, and did high jump, long jump and triple jump in highschool and you’re right tezo, you can wear your knees out just from the constant jumping and landing. What you are doing is smart, also doing high rep very low weight leg extensions and other leg exercises strengthen the tendons and ligaments in your knees as well. It’s pretty cool to load the bar up and squat a lot of weight too, but if you want to preserve your knees a little more and still gain the explosiveness you get from squats I would recommend doing hang cleans. Unless you are a freak lifter, you aren’t messing with nearly as much weight, and get the same explosive results you get from squatting. If you are looking to increase your explosiveness squatting can still help, but from my experience, I wouldn’t recommend maxing out and doing really heavy weight all that often.

Yea… Landing is VERY important. I see a lot of guys landing and putting all of their weight on one leg. SCARY lol. I practice landing just as much as I practiced jumping. The way I jump usually depends on the contact I think I’ll get.

Other than leg extensions, leg presses and calf raises with enough weight to feel the burn, I don’t really lift a lot as far as lower body. I stick to low weight and max repetitions like you said. I think too many basketball players are doing football workouts lol. I actually do excercises that use my own body weight.

Regardless of how you jump, my advice is to strengthen your calfs, thigh muscles and ESPECIALLY your knee ligaments, muscles around your knee, etc.

I always thought (and still think) I jumped higher off of two feet. That is the only way I could dunk it. I’ve dunked it off one leg a couple of times, but I would say jumping off two feet was the best for me.

Keep in mind I wasn’t some crazy acrobatic dunker, I didn’t start dunking until after high school and have yet to actually dunk in a game (church league, pickup, or intramural).

I remember in the dunk contest where the players had to spin the wheel and have their dunk picked out. J Rich couldn’t quite dunk it from the free throw line because he was a two feet type dunker where as Gerald Wallace was a one foot jumper. Correct me if those names are wrong, I’m too tired to look it up.

The first thing I though when I saw this topic was "Jason Richardson."

Regardless of how we play ball and jump, I’ve never seen a more explosive jumper off of two legs than J-Rich. It was almost like he couldn’t do a one leg takeoff. He would always jump-stop and then throw it down.
