So almost everybody in college and the NBA have jump shots. But in high school it is a rare thing to see someone with a jump shot(besides the big schools like Oak Hill). I am a freshman in high school and i am the only one in the southwest region of Minnesota with a genuine jump shot. My dad has always tought me to shoot with a high release and at the peak of your jump. And he is right because i have never gotten blocked on the varsity level and im only 5’9”. So if there are any young people here, learn to shoot a jump shot. Set shots seem like they have quicker releases, but they really don’t. and they are easy to see coming to block! Im sick of seeing everybody with a set shot. its too predictable and lazy.

There have been some guys with good set shots in the NBA. Brent Barry for one, but he had a high, quick release.

    I have a jump shot.

I’m a shooter, and my set shot is clearly more accurate, but my jump shot is more useful.

I’ve got a good shot, and I’m a great defender but I suck at everything else.

If we wanna give people advice say, LEARN HOW TO TAKE THE BALL TO THE HOLE..

that’s how MJ got good. On his clay court that was really windy, he couldn’t shoot shots beyond 15 feet because the wind would take control.

He drove to the basket and made the most out of his athleticism.

I’m the best shooter in my school, but my game is SO DAMN LIMITED because I can’t score in the paint.

People, if you wanna get better, score in the mutha effing paint.

Agreed Godfather. Im a solid shot, a great driver(i can dunk), and i great defender and rebounder and the best ball handler in the region. i play like a 6’2 player and im only 5’9”. Driving is the most usful thing on offense. Just learn to shoot a jump shot inside, and then you can start developing a jump shot from the outside!

there was a player at my high school about 2 years ago. he probably had one of the best jump shots in the state. he averaged 21 ppg. but he couldnt drive. if he couldve drove he could have averaged around 30ppg. but he never develped it.

    I can dunk, but I’m 6’1.

I can’t dunk in a game though – maybe if it is a fast break and I am 100% all alone.

But yeah, driving is more important because then you can get to the line which also puts your opponents in foul trouble.

Yeah, I don’t have a jump shot, but back in high school, I could shoot better than some of the guys on the Varsity team which is saying a lot because my high school basketball team were state champions and my cousin was a mc donalds all american from my school.. I would spends 2-3 hours every day during my summers off outside just shooting and shooting. I couldn’t practice dribbling too much because I wasn’t on an actual court, so I just shot. I could also play defense very well. During pick up games, I’ve always gotten comments about my defense from actual bball players at my high school. I’ve always been a quick guy, but I knew I wouldn’t have a chance to make the team, so I never tried out.

Learn how to dribble with your head up. And even when u dribble it should only be 2 dribbles most, either pass or shoot after. Puttin the ball on the floor isn’t a really good idea though it’s better to jus play ur motion offence and work it side to side. if u swing the ball fast enough ull get an open shot or a lane. As far as shooting ur shot should always be the same thats why u dont c ray ray shooting sets. But if ur not a good jump shooter. try the turn around fade away. it will create the space u need and its pretty much a one footed shot.

I think its beneficial to have both, when you are wide open you can get set and shoot a set shot, and also concerve energy, but when shooting off screens and with a defender in your face it’s to your advantage to have a high release. I’ve always used both and am a very good mid range shooter, but I’m not a 3 point threat, I probably would go 1 or 2 for 5 in game situations. Also learning the step back shot to create space, much like Kevin Durant does is great to add to your shooting arsenal.
