newgenduderParticipantA lot of you guys here can remember that Julius Randle was a decent mid-range and off the dribble shooter in high school. Of course he then barely attempted jumpers in college – but he had a really good shooting pre-season in 2014 before his injury.
This past season he shot a new form, it didn’t work out well. http://www.youtube.com/watch here’s a breakdown of the two different forms we’ve seen from Randle. I also have a Randle defense critique video on my channel if you’re interested. The Randle shooting vid ties into the "hair shooting" theory.
Thanks guys, cool to share with a draft following who remember that he was a decent shooter in high school.

Meditated StatesParticipantConstantly playing out of position= Perry Jones. Never working on NBA skills. They are told to post and hide those other abilities until they are pro. Kills players.

newgenduderParticipantI agree that college limits a lot of players games, but I don’t think that hurt Julius much. He shot very well in his rookie 2014 pre-season

Ahkasi ClayParticipantByron Scott stunts players growth.
Randle is going into his 3rd season. We need to see some growth.

GBeeParticipantRandle was never a good shooter at any level, not even HS. Don’t mistake a willing shooter for a good one. In HS he shot a flat, sling shot, heavy ball and on top of that he had bad shot selection, especially when it came to trying to showcase his jumper.

newgenduderParticipanthe certainly wasn’t bad. he would hit one a game, and some games hit a few. did he shoot a good % no. But last year he shot the worst % on midrange shots for someone who took that many. He was never that bad. And his rookie preseason (’14) he shot the ball well man. stroke looked way better than now

GBeeParticipantI don’t agree. I have never seen him as a good or decent shooter at any level.
Form is bad, his release changes (release gets slower the further out he shoots), he shoots a heavy ball, he short arms his follow through, has poor touch and he has small hands (less ball control, less margin for error).
I distinctly remember watching him in HS starting his junior year. He didn’t like dealing with double and triple teams so he drifted out to the perimeter where he could catch the ball more easily, either that or he would bring the ball up so he wouldn’t have to worry about receiving the ball. Other than bully drives, his perimeter game sucked, mainly because he was a bad shooter who could get suckered into taking bad shots.

newgenduderParticipantI think his release started to be fine. I mean, people see the cockback and automatically think it’s a bad release, but Zbo was a deadly midrange shooter, so was Boozer — and Randle had cockback but it worked for him decently imo. And i also think higher of his ball handling. His downhill/drop hesitation move is just automatic, it’s a 2nd move in the lane/finishing move that he’s lacking and causes him to plow into the guy, and that doesn’t work at this level.

Anton123ParticipantIt must be said that in some of the "before" clips Randle shoots from way above his head, sometimes he brings it all the way down.
I guess that is the problem, back then his release was inconsistent as well. I like the "hair theory", but I don’t like the players you use ase proof (Marcus Smart, Julius Randle and DeAngelo Russel) – two of them were always bad shooters and we’ve never seen Russel shoot NBA threes before he grew his hair out longer.
But you may be right. The fact that all the greatest shooters have always had either short hair or wavy hair that couldn’t affect a shot is very interesting.
