what are your guys thoughts on him? I know with how bad the lakers are playing its always easy to say the stats are meaningless for bad teams because someone has to get them, but rebounding is a trait that translates really well regardless of circumstances and julius is a very good rebounder. He is currently one of only a dozen guys in the nba averaging a double double and all 11 of the other guys play more minutes then his 27 minutes per game. In fact his per 36 min rebound average is 5th in the nba of qualified players. He also is a fantastic ball handler and athlete with the ability to blow by guys. He has soft touch around the paint, but he really needs to work on finishing with his off hand more which it appears he is trying. If he ever gets the jumper down he’s going to be scary because teams play him for the drive and he still is able to get into the paint when guys are 5 feet off him. If guys actually have to come out 20 feet to respect his jumper hes going to be getting into the paint all day drawing fouls.

I had really high hopes for him back in preseason when he was killing it and looked like the teams best player in October. Then when the regular season started he struggled a lot more then I expected. He eventually lost his starting job and scott was giving him a short leash.

Then a few weeks back larry nance went down with an injury and randle was thrust back into the starting spot and given more minutes. His stats over the last 12 games since he got the starting spot back: 13.3ppg…12.2rpg…47%fg shooting(this is big because he was really struggling finishing shots this season and now he is hitting the mid range a lot better and finishing over guys a little better down low).

Also he should be in the rising stars challenge.

Havent seen much of him THIS year, but one sure thing is he can score and he can rebound. Ive also seen flashes of his ballhandling, which i think he could keep developing and be a sort of Terrence Jones type with more polish around the rim and better rebounding skills. He just needs to stay in shape and be patient with the Lakers rebuild.

I honestly feel Julius has played well throughout the season in what most would consider his rookie season do to his injury last year, his jumper is coming around as well as his right hand, I’m in love with what I’ve seen in the last two games against playoff teams, against the Spurs he put up 15 Pts, 16 Reb, 4 Ast, & 2 stl and lost by four, and against the Pacers he put up 15 Pts, 19 Reb, & 3 Ast and lost by two, Randle must be part of the Lakers long-term l future.

Especially when you consider this is really his Rookie season….. When he slid a bit in the 2014 Draft, I understood b/c he lacks length & gives up a bit of height at that PF spot…..

But to average 11 pts & 10 reb as a 21 y/o NBA 1st year player is incredibly impressive to me…. Other than Wiggins – no one else except Randle – no one else in the 2014 Lottery has done much of anything: b/c of injury or still too young……   I really like the Lakers Draft picks the last 2 years: Clarkson, Brown, Nance jr, Russell & Randle…. That is some nice young talent there…. I believe they have a nice young core….

Who would you guys like to see the Lakers Draft? & what do you guys think?

Brandon Ingram might be the best fit for this Lakers team even though Simmons is looked at as the best prospect, I’ve watched both guys and to me Ingram will stretch the floor to give Randle more room to work in the post and give Russell & Clarkson someone to kick the ball out too, and if the Lakers can’t get Simmons or Ingram at 1 or 2 because they fall to 3 I think Bender might be there 3rd option.

I love Randle, obviously he is a Laker so that helps but I have been a fan of his since highschool.  I think he is a unique athlete at his size in that he is extremely fast endline to endline.  For someone who is 21 years old it’s rare to see grown men bounce off of him as he moves around the court.  Anybody who has played basketball knows that sometimes there are certain guys that you hate to play against because their bodies just seem to be like a rock everywhere.  I feel like he is one of those guys.

Of course the pundits (you know who you are) will say he has short arms and no jumpshot.  For those that treat prospects as being complete at 21 years old, they might be sour on Randle.  I however believe in growth, and progression and Randle is showing some right now with his jump shot.  For what is essentially being his rookie year, he is having a great one…

Jabari Parker has showed me nothing, same with Gordon.  Exum is out. Embiid hasn’t played basketball in 3 years.  Marcus Smart is Tony Allen 2.0.   So as it turns out, unless I am missing some people, Randle will probably end up as the 2nd or 3rd best player in his draft class.

As far as who the Lakers should draft… well the only real question comes down to if they end up in the 3rd slot.  If they are 1 or 2, it’s obviously going to be Simmons or Ingram.  If they end up 3 the decision becomes a little more difficult.  I lean towards Brown or Bender.  Most importantly, if the Lakers keep their pick they will be able to take the BPA, which also fills a positional need.  Keeping the pick is imperative.

Jabari Parker is still getting his bearings right after that Knee injury, The Bucks were dumb letting Parker gain all that weight, its messing with his speed and responsivness on the floor.. As far as Julius Randle, I think what made him so great in College was his ability to attack of the dribble for his size.. he could be a really solid offensive threat if he worked more on his ball handling in the mid post/high post.. Almost the way Bernard King did.

As I’ve said before, developing a consistent mid-range shot will go a long way in determining what kind of career he will have. To his credit, he is showing more confidence in his shot even though the form definitely still needs work.

Randle has an aggressive and relentless approach to the game that you just can’t teach. I already think he is one of the best rebounders in the league. Even though he is not long and probably doesn’t project as much of a shot-blocker, he is sturdy and moves his feet very well for a player his size. It’s just a matter of being focused and in position more, but I think he could ultimately be a pretty good defender.

He gets himself into trouble sometimes by trying to do too much off the dribble and getting himself into positions where he is forced to fling up wild shots in the paint. The fg% isn’t where you want it to be a for a guy that primarily scores around the basket. However, I’d say overall he’s having a pretty decent rookie year and there are a lot of positives in his game to build on. I hope, whether they start or not, Scott commits to playing both him and Russell at least 30 mins a game for the rest of the season.

I was cautious about him because of the fact he was so reliant on his physicality in college, and I saw a lot of similar tendencies to a guy I was wrong about in the NBA (T-Rob). While he wasn’t undersized, per se, he wasn’t as polished a perimeter threat as he needed to be in the NBA.

His rookie level production is about what I expected. He certainly has his strengths as a player, but he’s shooting just .549% at the rim (when compared to his more athletic rookie counterpart Larry Nance’s 71% at the rim…and also 6’1” Lou Williams’ .589% at the rim )

His perimeter game just isn’t good enough to make up for that kind of struggle down low. On the plus, he’s been really nice on the defensive boards, and he’s only 21 years old.

I’m in no way ready to close the books on him, but he’s looking to me a lot more like a future role player. On a good team, I feel he’d be getting really limited minutes, but this is a good opportunity for him to learn. It’s where he takes it from next year, that will be important. He’s just so in-efficient offensively, and that’s kind of what I was afraid of a few years back when he was coming out of Kentucky. He even really slowed down in SEC play, and against bigger NCAA teams.

no question he needs to finsh better around paint. But hes a unique talent that I wouldn’t compare to other bigs in that regard. His ball handling and one on one ability means hes not just a catch and finish guy like larry nance. If you told nance to go and try and get 20 points his shooting percentage would drop like a rock. Plus hes getting better each month which is always what you want to see from rookies. Like I stated in the opening, his shooting percentage is going up and its not just because of more good looks, hes actually making shots he wasn’t finishing early in the year.

David Lee could achieve the same empty 12/10 stats if he got traded to the Lakers.

Randle and Russell have been called out at least once for laughing after losses.

I get the feeling that Randle will always be about his stats more than winning, kind of like a short, less talented Al Jefferson.

As a bench energy and scoring guy Randle could help a real NBA team, except that his attitude will always probably be poor in a situation like that, even if his team is winning.

God forbid people laugh.  You probably haven’t been to many social events or had many friends,  but sometimes people laugh… Even after something as dramatic as a loss in an 82 game season… Especially kids.

This is right up there with your remarks about D Russes haircut.  I bet Randles new frosted tips are giving you nightmares.

I think he will be a Luis Scola type player.

A bit quicker and a bit less crafty, but decent offensively with some go-to moves despite being undersized. Whether he starts or not, he should be good for 30 minutes a game in a frontcourt rotation for a playoff team. If he can shoot above 35% from deep, hes especially dangerous because hes quite good off the dribble.

I see limited defensive potential though…but hes a hard worker and 50% of defense is effort.

Not being disrespectful cos Scola was a handful in his prime.

I see him becoming a more athletic version of Z-Bo once he reaches his prime. This is basically his rookie year so I anticipate his finishing ability will increase and he will add some post moves.

Julius Randle will be scary…..he’s big and strong and has an elite first step. He just has to polish that jumper and improve his off hand. He also can definitely improve on the low block, but he is impressive as a young prospect to me
