“The Boston Celtics are trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons and two second-round draft picks, sources told ESPN on Monday night.”

I guess this deal is made to bring in a guard that is less concerned about scoring. This lets Scoot and Shaedon take a step forward and Jrue to mentor them to take that next step.

This is stunning. I did not think a team in Portland’s position would take on Jrue Holiday’s three years and $100 million contract. I don’t really hold Simons in super-high regard, but Boston can either use him to help fill the scoring void left by Tatum for a year or re-route him in a subsequent trade.

Nice deal for Boston saving a load of money going forward and getting a 20ppg player who is 9 years younger for next season. Jrue is a fantastic team mate and has had a fine career including a couple of championships so will be a great mentor for likes of Scoot as BTPH has said.

I’m not quite sure what Portland gets out of the deal longer term apart from Jrue as a leader and a great locker room presence. Maybe they weren’t perpared to pay the sort of money Simons would be looking for on a new deal and thought Jrue was a proven guy for another couple of years.

Boston can shine Simons with Tatum being out and let him walk next summer or possibly trade him on if he has a good start to the season and his value is high.. If Tatumn returns sound Boston become contenders again and could offer Simons the chance of a title which might make him accept less money on a new deal than via a non contender. They then thus have a guy on the same timeline as Tatum and Brown.

The difference between Simons and Jrue’s salaries at the cut off point for this season and then next year is magnified by the amount of luxury tax Boston save too.

Good for Portland. Clearly making a push to compete. Not sure I like Jrue Holiday on the back end of his career with that huge contract but it clearly worked for Houston with FVV.

Portland went 23-18 in the second half of the season so they have the potential to be a play in team. Plus they have guys on big contracts so might as well try to do something next year.
