ag-pennypackerParticipantIt looks like Chicago really wants a SG that can shoot and they are hoping that they will be able to get Rudy Fernandez. I’m not really sure why they don’t throw their hat in for JR Smith. It seems like he would provide them with the 3 point shooting and athleticism that they are looking for and they could get him for pennies on the dollar right now.
The risk seems small to me because he is a free agent at the end of the year and is only owed $6 million for this season. If JR was a serious locker room problem they could just tell him to go home and eat his salary and get it off the books next season. It seems to me like JR Smith is just as good if not better than Rudy Fernandez and he would come at a fraction of the price. Thoughts??

killerinstinct23i agree but i heard he was a head case but it would make it hard for miami so i would rather go with fernadez cuz of his aggressivness

tke744ParticipantHey first post guys!
But on your thoughts Rudy is actually still under rookie contract if i am not mistaken so he would actually be about 3-4 times less expensive then JR and i dont know how the bulls cap space is looking but if they are over the luxury thats a dollar per dollar fine so all of a sudden Jrs 6 million dollar contract is 12 million dollar contract. But if thats not the case then i do not see a reason to go after him especially if his contract expires at the end of the season he can spread the floor and he confident/cocky he thinks he can ball with any one and going up against Boston, Orlando and Miami you need players like that0 - Posted on: Mon, 09/06/2010 - 11:38pm #396084

doubledribblerParticipantI’m pretty sure Bulls are under the cap, but not enough to just trade a pick to get JR. Meaning that they would have to trade a player and the only guy I see as expendable on that team for a headcase like JR would be James Johnson. Not sure that is going to get Denver to trade him and still think it won’t work under league rules. Besides I think Rudy makes more sense, even though JR might be the better player. Rudy is less expensive and they would not have to sacrifice any rotation guys to likely land him the way his value is falling. Plus, the Bulls wanted absolutely nothing for him the first time they got him in a trade. They waived him as soon as he came over in the Tyson Chandler trade.

Toronto16ParticipantWhen I saw the title of this thread I thought a trade actually happened. But when you have a young guy like Rose, you don’t want to bring a head case like JR Smith around him. Especially when you know Rose, who is a good guy, gets influenced easily. (That gang picture)

MarxmusParticipantJR Smith is certainly talented. I was at the game where he dropped
11 threes on the Jazz.JR’s problem is that he’ll keep firing them whether he’s making them or not, which makes him a huge liability at the end of games. I don’t believe that Chicago should go for either of these guys. Neither one is going to help their chemistry and they’ve already picked up a couple of good guard/forwards this off season, one which will be great in defensive situations and one that will give you some great shooting on the perimiter.

midwestbbscoutParticipantwhy does it seem that Pax pulls the trigger like 2-3 years too late on everything???? He let J.R. go for nothing in the P.J. Brown trade….just like they shoulda hired Thibadeau (really need to learn to spell that right) 2 years ago instead of Vinny……

SwatLakeCityParticipantyou are absolutely right marxmus. JR Smith is like a two year old with a gun. Just not a good combination. Its almost worse than the Gilbert Arenas situation in Washington. Combine that with his liability for 3s, and the fact that he is already past his prime, and you already have Boozer’s attitude which even Utah could not control and keep it under wraps. I think that the only team(s) that could handle a player like JR Smith and not pay a “price” for it are Miami, Boston, and LAL. The Bulls just don’t want that kind of package on their team. This is why Fernandez is much more the guy they want. Yes JR is better, but just too much of the “bad boy” attitude.

joecheck88Participantlook im very excited to see the new bulls play and they are one of my favorite teams with one of my favorite players(d rose) but they set the team back by signing boozer. he is a very good player but i dont see them winning a championship with boozer. i think utah proved that when they couldnt get past the lakers in the playoffs. i dont like my power forwards being 6 8. that may just be me but it seems like most teams that win have 2 tall guys at the 4 and 5, ex lakers with gasol and bynum. it similar with okc, ill take them serious when they get a legit pf. thats why teams like nj and sac excite me for the future. they have size, skill, and power in their young bigs. favors and lopez could be devastating in a few years. cousin, thompson and whiteside could also be special.
point is guys like rudy fernandez and jr smith arent going to make the bulls much better where it counts, in the playoffs. they will win many games and could advance in the playoffs but there is almost no chance of a title in chicago with 6 foot 8 pf carlos boozer as your second option.
also i think utah will be better in the playoffs with al jefferson. they are my sleeper for 2nd seed in the west and deron williams is my sleeper mvp.

NJHooper95ParticipantI doubt the bulls want J.R now if they didnt keep him when they traded Tyson Chandler to New Orleans. I thought at that time even though they had Ben Gordon they could have kept Smith for even more fire power. Smith never made it to training camp. Smith is a loose cannon but if you can get him at a cheap price your rewards out-weigh your risks. I dnt think they should do it now, but definitely before.

midwestbbscoutParticipantbut they need that firepower now without BG…..one knock on Smith is that he can’t defend but he can’t possibly be a worse defender than Gordon was…..

ghettosermonParticipantChicago should make a play for Nick Young. His value isn’t too bad probably and he has limitless offensive potential. Not sure what the Bulls could give as compensation though. Bulls wouldn’t give up Taj Gibson, and Wizards would not want James Johnson as he isn’t an upgrade over Josh Howard and Al Thornton.

Lotto StudParticipantDeng makes $11mil & Smith $6mil it most definately would have to be a 3 team trade.

OhCanada-ParticipantI honestly think JR Smith should go to GoldenState (since they always end up with headcases) or Indiana should start picking up more headcases like Lance Stephenson and get back to what gave them success (when they had Tinsley, Jackson, Artest, Oneal if not for the brawl they may have won it all that year).
LOL at the end of the day Karl has a good relationship with “headcases” and I honestly doubt JR is going anywhere.
