Josh smith stock has fallen worse then MySpace. A guy who once was talked about as an all star player now jumping from team to team. He was a beast in Atlanta even though he took a lot of terrible shots. I know he’s getting older and a bit of a head case but I would love the celts to sign him on the vet minimum 1 year deal. Brad Stevens had a knack of bringing out the best in players and he is a talented guy. Even Turner , Jordan Crawford and Marcus Thornton are past examples. He could come off the bench guard multiple positions and he played with Horford on Atlanta. Anyone else think josh smith has anything left in the tank.

I also still think he has something left in the tank.

If he’s playing the power forward position (not out of position at the 3) he’s much more effective, so that’s important for him. He’s still a solid rebounder and defender, can finish around the rim, protects the rim a bit (not as much as he used to but still better than many PFs) and of course, he’s a monster in transition. He’s also a well above average passer with nice vision for a power forward.

The cons with him are well documented, we all know he takes too many long twos, can’t hit 3s as well as you would like, and can sometimes be a bit of a headcase off court(although this hasn’t been the case lately with him and that might be a thing of the past.). He coughs up a fair amount of turnovers as well.

Having said all that, I would much rather have him on my team for 5 mil a year than, say, Kenneth Farried for over 10 mil a year. They have a lot of the same qualities, but I feel Smith is much more skilled and while he’s not as good of a rebounder as Farried, Smith is a better defender, shooter, passer, ball handler, and has a comparable set of physical tools plus Farried has very little in terms of ball skills and bball IQ.

Not trying to pick on Farried, it’s just someone who I thought was comparable as a player who makes way more money and who is thought of as a solid player (if a bit overpaid). Yet, people talk about Farried as a hard worker and somewhat ignore the fact that he had a lot of the same weaknesses as a guy like Josh Smith, while Josh Smith is trashed for those same weaknesses, Even though he’s a very versatile guy with a lot of skills. I think if we look past Josh Smith’s reputation we can see that he still has something to offer.

What constitutes one being a headcase?

I’d say not being coachable whatsoever makes him a headcase.

Wouldn’t mind seeing him back in Atlanta, coming off the bench. He’s a good PF and played decent with Dwight in Houston.

Josh Smiths days of being effective are done.  His talent is such that you want his negatives on your team.  He will bitch when he doesn’t get his way as he did while in Detroit and his skill level doesn’t commensurate with the problems he will cause.

How many millions did Detroit pay him just to leave?  Stan Van Gundy isn’t going to do that if it isn’t necessary.

He didn’t &$#%#&@ when he didn’t get his way in Detroit. He was very graceful when he went out and had no bad things to say in Detroit. While he was there, there was in no way an instance of real documented locker room issues between he and other players. Or even he and his coach.

He wasn’t a great fit, and Stan Van knew it, but he did not pout his way out of Detroit. Where did you get this perception again??

It seems like Josh Smith is just less interested in defense, which is a problem considering that was his bread and butter during his great years in Atlanta. He use to get a ridiculous amount of blocks and had the ability to guard the perimeter.

On the Clippers, he was always slouching a defense which only made his poor shot selection less forgiven.

Detroit waived him because he refused to play team basketball, instead hoisted up stupid shots that he wasn’t capable of making and played poor defense.

He might get some run in the NBA for this season 2016-17, but then I think it will be off to China for Josh Smith for the 2017-18 season…..

Josh Smith update – he did go to China

On November 8, 2016, Smith signed a three-month, $1.5+ million contract with the Sichuan Blue Whales of the Chinese Basketball Association.

Give the guy a break he played 12 seasons and averaged 15ppg, 7.5 rpg, 3 assists, 1.5 dpg and the 2 bpg. Thats a decent career. He also made tons of money.

    chucking up nearly 8 x 3’s per game !!

According to Kelly Iko of ESPN, Josh Smith is “very interested” in a return to the Rockets.
Iko adds that a deal could be in the works soon, meaning the interest is mutual. Smith spent last season in China and played well with 18.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.8 steals and 2.0 blocks. However, he also attempted 7.8 triples per game, making 2.3 of them on a 28.9 percent clip. Smith has always taken a lot of heat for launching triples at will and his shot selection is one of the reasons his NBA career went downhill. The Rockets have been shopping Ryan Anderson, so Smith could be in the mix for minutes if he lands in Houston.

For a guy who was considered to have a very good defensive game, it was strange that he fell out of favour in the NBA so quickly. He was perhaps one of the first players to fall foul to the current need to have forwards who have a legit 3 point range.

If his defensive game is still solid, I’d have thought a fair few teams would have looked at him. Perhaps he is one of these guys who were drafted young and tend to have played their best basketball by the age of 30 or he may have lost that athletic edge he had on other players and doesn’t have a B game to fall back on.
