Toronto16ParticipantAccording to reports, Michael Jordan has called off the deal that would have sent Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw to Toronto in exchange for Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans. This is a big blow to the Raptors as getting rid of Jose’s contract was great for the franchise, and Tyson Chandler would have really improved the Raptor defence.

IndianaBasketballParticipantGreat decision by MJ in my opinion…

TRC1991ParticipantThis also means the Suns don’t get Turkoglu and Childress

Stojakovicfor3ParticipantThe suns still get Hedo and Childress. Also MJ didn’t kill the trade, he just delayed it. It will probably still happen.

NashyMingParticipantFrom what I have read so far, it seems the deal is not entirely dead, but other pieces might be involved.
MJ is reluctant to include Tyson Chandler in the deal because MJ felt Ty Chan was the only reliable big man on the Bobcats. He’s probably ok on the Calderon for Diaw, but the other fillers would be different.
There is also a report that Ajinca was told that he’s traded, so maybe they would include Ajinca in the deal instead.
Regarding the Turkoglu to the Suns part of the deal, it’s a confirmed regardless if the Bobcats is involved or not. Only the fillers included in the deals may change, but Turkoglu is definitely going to Phoenix and Barbosa going to Toronto.
Childress’ deal has nothing to do with this 3-way trade. He’s a S&T between the Suns and the Hawks. It would go down regardless of the Turk deal.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI wouldn’t say it’s dead yet either… All of the teams are supposed to be going over it again right now.

PaulsJayhawksParticipantI hear Chandler was the issue that MJ didn’t want to send him. Diaw for Calderon may still be alive. Then it allows you to still use the TPE on Collison/Okafor and I am a happy man!

mikeyvthedonParticipantBecause as of right now it is just a rumor that Michael has cold feet. I do not know why the Bobcats were going to do this deal the first place, as they already have DJ Augustin who they chose 9th in 2008 (Who I guess they have given up on?) and if they trade Tyson and Diaw they would seem to have little chance of getting to the play-offs, not to mention wouldn’t they want the favorable cap situation with Tyson’s expiring contract? Made little sense to me, but as I live in Toronto, I wanted it to happen as I think we get two great players for our system and one who could move Andrea Bargnani to the 4 (His playing Center hurts to watch). Jose is a good player and all, but I think his time here is done. He would be an offensive upgrade over Raymond Felton (he is a great shooter and one of the better playmakers in the league), but his defensive issues are well publicized. It is not that he doesn’t try, as I think most players tend to at least TRY and play defense, but lacking athleticism, especially at a position which usually has the fastest players in the league, can really hurt. Charlotte struggled scoring last year, but it was their defense that kept them in games, and you would think they might want to at least take a gamble that Chandler stays healthy this year and that Augustin works hard this summer, which I am sure he will as he seems like a player who works quite hard. They would be getting a trade exception if they do the Raptors deal, but trade exceptions just leave questions. The fact is, good PG’s are easier to find than good big men, their are simply more to choose from, so I would say if Michael stops this deal he is showing he cares about his team. However, if he lets it go through, than he better have something else up his sleeve or the Bobcats will likely not be back in the play-offs. Their certainly seems to be a hole in Cleveland, and they would probably still be better than Toronto, but I think New York is very likely to make the post-season, and I think other teams are improving as well. I would not be surprised if a healthy New Jersey team improved significantly, and injuries killed Indiana last year as well. Charlotte maybe is looking to the future with this trade, or has some plan on who to spend the exception on, but it appeasrs that it would just make it harder for them to take the steps forward they achieved last season.

doubledribblerParticipantWhen Larry Brown coaches a team expect high turnover rates. Guys falling in and out of favor just like Nelson with the Warriors. I don’t think it’s a bad trade for the Bobcats though. It gives them a starting pg and a nice rebounder. I believe that having one bad defender on your team typically isn’t going to kill you. The problem with Toronto is that they generally trotted out 5 guys on the court at one time that could not defend.
I like Diaw, but he has a habit of coming into the season out of shape and he proved to be less effective once Jackson arrived. Diaw needs to handle the ball a lot to be at his most effective even if it’s creating for others. Him and Tyson were both miserable on the boards last year. Wallace averaged as many boards as they did combined. The only positive of keeping Tyson is that he may have a good year because it’s a contract year (not sure how much that means if there is going to be a lockout the following season though). His best year was 11pts, 11 rebs, 1 blk and that’s playing with Chris Paul and before we heard of these potential injury issues from the OKC trade that fell apart.

NashyMingParticipantSo all those rumors that said MJ likes Ty Chan is false.
The truth is that Dallas Mavs got into the deal (after they failed to get Al Jefferson from TWolves) had made MJ an offer of Dampier, Najera, Carroll for Chandler and Ajinca.
The move is to save a little bit of money but not by much really.
I don’t understand MJ’s logic here.
Dampier is a walking buyout as his contract is non-guarantee, but Najera (~3mil, 2yr left) and Matt Carroll (~4mil, 3yr left) are not gonna be too useful and they don’t really come cheap for future saving.
This is a worse trade than trading with Toronto. I guess only MJ can really “top” his move and get even worse.

NashyMingParticipantWojYahooNBA
Charlotte has traded Tyson Chandler and Alex Ajinca to Dallas for Dampier, Matt Carroll and Najera, a league source tells Y! Sports.
I don’t really get why MJ did this trade. It’s worse than the Calderon trade.
The original deal with Raptors for Bobcats,
In
Jose Calderon (9mil, 3 yr)
Reggie Evans (6mil, 1yr)
D.Jones (from Suns) (min, non-guarantee)
Out
Diaw (9mil, 2yr)
Chandler (13mil, 1yr)This deal would let MJ save a little money this year but take on Jose’s last year. It gives the Bobcats a PG that is pass-first and a good shooter.
The new deal with Mavs for Bobcats,
In
Erica Dampier (11mil, non-guarantee)
Matt Carroll (4mil, 3 yr)
Eduardo Najera (3mil, 2yr)
Out
Chandler (13mil)
Ajinca (<2mil)This deal would let MJ save a little money this year but take on 2 more year of Carroll and 1 more year
of Najera. Also, Diaw is still with the team. They get two backup that probably won't contribute much while shipped out a young atheletic 7-footer (although raw, still has potential). There's no logic for MJ to prefer a worse deal. Any idea?
