I’m sure most of you haven’t had a chance to see Jonny Flynn play this season besides the Rookie-Sophomore game, but he has been nothing short of a disappointment this season for Wolves fans. Not to say he won’t be a decent rotation player in the League, but his play looks nothing like a PG’s. He doesn’t make his teammates better, he over dribbles on almost every offensive set and takes very ill advised shots, see last night’s game at Miami when he tried to hit a three and then turned it over while trying to make an acrobatic pass with less than 2 minutes left. I’ve been speaking to many Wolves fans on Canis Hoopus and all seem to be in agreement that his best role will be as a 6th Man/Instant Offense type of guy, what do you all think?

I wouldn’t write Jonny off yet. It is his ROOKIE season and he is playing on a pretty damn weak team. My wolves really don’t have a legit scoring option (maybe you say Big Al but he isn’t aggressive enough) so Jonny puts alot of that weight on his shoulders. He is still learning and when your learning on a team that lacks a scorer, your PG is going to operate in a different fashion than a Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, or CP3 type.

Give him some time to adjust. This team is transitioning and learning a difficult triangle style offense. Its gonna take some time, not just 3/4 of a season.

Sounds like you’ve been watching them too, that’s a really good observation I never thought of, once they have a legit perimeter scorer I think he’ll need to play more within himself, to his strengths, I remember him on several occasions saying he was just trying to make something happen, fearless leader? Yes. High Basketball IQ? No.

Give him more time until you write him off as a 6th man…He’s got a good deal of potential, and he’s shown that he’s not a SG at all. I don’t see that in him. He just needs a sharper basketball IQ, which comes with experience…..

I expected more as a Cuse fan. I kept calling him the best point guard in college last year. With the arrival of Darren Collision, the Wolves drafted EVERY wrong point guard. Assuming you wanted someone to step right in and be Deron Williams, etc.

Honestly, it’s early. I too expected more from Flynn this season. But he’s still adjusting. He didn’t take bad shots at SU. Plus, he’s not surrounded by great players.

666BlancoDiablo I agree with you, Johnny Flynn is an undersized SG. I think he can carve out a nice career as a mini SG, but his game isn’t suited to being a PG. Yes he can play the point but scoring is Flynn’s real strength.

I don’t see the problem with Flynn. I think he has the quickness and ball handling skills to be a good point gaurd. He does often look to pass the ball to other players but we Wolves fans know, our options aren’t that good. Wait until we get a good shooting gaurd in the backcourt with him to decide if he’s the real deal or not. But all in all if this Rubio kid ever shows up on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, I wouldn’t be upset with Flynn coming off the bench. he’ll be a great backup. When you look at it on a good team Jefferson is the only legit starter on our team. Love and Brewer are both back ups on many other NBA teams

I honestly think that Flynn has the ABILITY to be a good point guard.

The only thing is, on the T Wolves, there’s no one else who can create stuff off the dribble, nor are there great pick and role targets (Jefferson and Love are above average, not great).

I GUARANTEE you that if Flynn were on the Lakers or Cavs, people would have a much better opinion of him thus far. No one will call him a SG because he’d have so many targets to hit who are BETTER than Johnny Flynn.

On the Wolves, there isn’t that commanding presence that demands the ball, that’s why he tends to over dribble and turn it over.

Oh BTW, his shots are NOT as ill advised as people imply. I honestly would rather Johnny Flynn take a few contested jumpers late in the shot clock instead of running a WEAK A$$ pick and roll and kicking it out to poor shooters (Brewer, Wilkins, etc).

Put Flynn on a good team, and there won’t be anymore of this “sixth man at best” talk.

Im on the fence right now, i see both sides of the argument. I agree with the guys like DHAMP, JNixon, and Dymes but i also see what 666BlancoDiablo is saying too. to defend 666BlancoDiablo, my argument is even as a rookie on a bad team shouldnt Johnny Flynn who handles the ball alot get more than 4 apg. I mean he almost get 3 turnovers a game. I thought he could get aleast 6apg this year in his 30mpg. His scoring is good for a rookie PG too. But he is very young and I can see him panning out as a very good PG in the future. I think if he can get 17ppg and 7apg and play solid defense he will be worth the selection and honestly he isnt far off from those numbers. Ill give him til after his third year before I judge him(I would give most players less time but im a Johnny Flynn believer). If in his 4th year he isnt showing much improved PG skills ill agree that he is an under sized 2 guard.

Another great move by the Wolves, way to go Kahn!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’d rather watch an expansion team than watch the Wolves this year, especially Flynn, he hasn’t looked anything like a PG. I can’t believe any of you are trying to look at him positively, you obviously haven’t had a chance to watch Wolves games this year, that kid is too stubborn and cocky to ever change his game, good luck Rambis. Who takes sub 6 foot PGs in the Top Ten of drafts? And just remember Flynn isn’t even a PG. He’s the next TJ Ford at best. If you were Rubio, would you want to come to a franchise that selects sub 6 foot scorers in the Top Ten of drafts?

I support David Khan 100%. He knows this team is far from a championship caliber team. And rather than building right away into a decent playoff team by drafting guys that fit the bill as far as position he is going for the BPA and drafting what he refers to as “assets” instead. Last years draft was filled with talented PGs so he took them. This years draft has basically John Wall as the only star/all-star potential PG. He can move our surplus of talented PGs later once we have some talent on this team and then we can get pieces that fit the bills to make us a championship contender rather than 1 and done in the playoffs like so many other teams. Playoffs are nice but at the end of the year all that matters is who has the title. All 29 other teams just end up as losers and what differs between them is the biggest losers end up with higher picks and generally more cap since they didn’t try to build a playoff team that wasn’t gonna take a title.

I still love Wayne, even though Thornton is the better player, but both have bright futures. I do think we need to get Wall, Turner, or Cousins, we need star potential, but I’m still on the fence with Favors, Johnson, Monroe, and Aminu though, one of those seven will be a Wolves player next year, I don’t see them taking Aldrich or Whiteside.

I think it’s stupid to write off ANY player in their first 50 games or so of their rookie year. A lot of guys struggle in their first year and turn out to be stars, especially guards…Nash, Billups, Payton, Joe Johnson…you need to have patients, the Wolves arn’t going to be winning games for a few years, so it’s probably best not to call every player, who doesn’t come in and be an allstar instantly, a bench a player.

Diablo I think he has a decent basketball IQ, its just he is surrounded by alot of guys who don’t necessarily know how to play in the NBA at a high level. And then you combine that with trying to teach those players a concept as complex as the triangle offense and that creates a problem. Personally, on the court I feel I have a high basketball IQ. People I play with compare my game to a street style white chocolate like Jason Williams. Reasoning for that is that I make alot of plays for other guys by being creative. But when I am on the court with people who don’t know how to play ball (always look for an oncoming pass!!!) or move off the ball, my game suffers because my passes can quickly bounce off those guys and turn into TOs. I think Jonny is suffering a bit in the same regards. If you have a guy who plays as a scrappy as Jonny Flynn, he needs to be paired with guys who have enough awareness to keep up with him.

He reminds me a lot of TJ Ford. Same size and quickness, pounds a hole in the floor with his dribble, then chucks up an off balance J. He’s a guy who could start for many teams, but is better suited to lead the second unit as a scoring point.

remember people said the same thing about Chauncey Billups early in his career. I’m not saying that Flynn is the next Chauncey, but i think he will be okay. He really doesn’t have anyone else on his team that can create his own offense. Big Al is good, but he has been somewhat disappointing this year. Flynn is staying aggressive and is doing a pretty damn good job. Once he gets better player his assist numbers will rise and he wont force things as much.

Deron Williams average less point and about the same assist and 2.5 to in his first year.
Not saying he will be a Deron Williams but he will be fine the Wolves don’t have any talent of course you get more assist playing with player that are treats to create or can hit shoots when you set them up will get you more assist. Sure Jennings and Curry or maybe even Collison are out plaing him right now.
But Kid is a leader he is tough, when he learns the NBA game he will be a problem.
I will wait till next year and see how he progresses. Rubio is not coming through that door, draft a sg and get a center and the wolves will be ok. And tell your coach without Kobe or MJ type players in the line up the triangle does not seem to work as well. Change the damn offense to fit the payer they have if they ran I bet his averages would be why better then they are now.

I dont see what makes Flynn from what yall say any different than Jameer Nelson who in all honesty i hate him as the point for Orlando. I wish they had more of a true passer like Jason Williams in when Nelson is on the bench.

Cmon man this guy is not even finished his rookie year, averaging 13, 2.5, 4.3 wit a steal a game on a terrible team, and has a huge upside. Give it time and T’wolves fans, if you don’t want him I will take him off your hands.

OK, here we go….Eight years ago, this would have been a good season for Flynn. However, when Derron Williams, Chris Paul and Derrick Rose landed in the NBA, the expectations for point guards increased because overnight, the NBA became a point guard league.

i have to agree with blanco.. i havent watched as many games as you but ive talked to 2 wolves fans who watch all the games and feel almost the same as you. i dont think hes just gonna be a rotational player though, i think hes gonna be a starter but it wouldnt suprise me if his career ended up like bobby jacksons. my friends tell me that hes more of a scorer then a pg and looks for his shot alot more then he looks for teammates
