Every year, there is at least one player who was on nobody’s draft boards who then later on cracks the lottery only one year later, sometimes even higher. For an example, last year Victor Oladipo, Trey Burke and Kelly Olynyk were not projected as lottery picks by anybody prior to the start of last season. Neither were Damian Lillard, Dion Waiters, Thomas Robinson and Meyers Leonard in 2012. If I had to choose one player to have similar success to those guys I had just mentioned, I would go with Johnny O’Bryant from LSU. I have been following him since he played on those USA Junior National Teams with Bradley Beal, Andre Drummond and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. O’Bryant had an impressive Freshmen season with limited minutes only starting about half of the games. After Justin Hamilton went pro, O’Bryant took the lead role for the Tigers as a Sophomore. He then led the team in both points and rebounds.

What I admire the most about O’Bryant’s game is his rebounding ability. Not only does he have a gifted ability to grab boards but he as well fights aggressively for every missed shot that goes his direction. He is a very hard worker on the floor especially when it comes to rebounding. He is also an aggressive finisher when the ball is fed to him in the post. A recent article said that he now weighs 25 pounds less than he did than his arrival at LSU two years ago. One of his main weaknesses is how he can float around outside of the post while he is not being coached as he also tends to lose his chance to score by pump faking too often. He supposedly looked very impressive at one of the summer camps, saying he is a more powerful player down low which shows a great sign of improvement. With him being named to the Preseason All SEC Team this potential breakout year for O’Bryant could really improve his reputation for the NBA.

I agree I currently have O’Bryant 13th on my mock draft (haven’t changed it once) LSU will be a team to look out for this year. It is also crazy how underrated Jarrell Martin has been they are going to make a tough front court.

Johnny’s problem is that he’s a spastic player who doesn’t think the game well and doesn’t let the game come to him. His feel for the game is poor. With his frame, there is no reason for him to be shooting under 50% (let alone under 40% as was the case is frosh season). He makes some odd WTF decisions with the ball in his hands, which is why he’s also TO prone in addition to shooting poorly from the floor.. If he just concentrates on doing the little things that big men do and finishing he could maybe make it as a bench, energy big. IOW he needs to stop the ugly turnaround fadeaways and other no-hoper shots that he takes.

Seen him the other day while walking to class, dude has slimmed down but he’s still huge, he’s also been working on his all around game with coaches, but he said he’s trying to play mainly inside this year.

I think he will automatically be better though because of Jordan Mickey and my boy Jarrell Martin. He won’t be a 1st round pick, but look at him sort of like Boozer coming out of Duke.
