ChicagoCaseyParticipantThe more I think about it John Wall probably is the most underrated great player. I believe he do not get the love from the national media and fans outside of Wizards/John Wall fans. He literally improves his play every single season, he carries a team to the playoffs the last 2 seasons, he literally makes his teammates better, and he actually have an all around game and plays defense. The national media / fans glorify fancy dribbles, three point shooting, and acrobatic lay-ups. The national media / fans don’t appreciate defense, passing, intangibles, and being a leader.
I typically rank/compare players based on who’s the better all around player. I tend to grade players on defense, passing, handle, shooting, rebounding, finishing, being able to lead a team, intangibles, and the ability to make teammates better. I been hearing/reading the Kyrie Irving/John Wall debate over the past 2-3 years and I don’t really think it’s really close in terms of who’s the better player (all around). John Wall is much better defender (that’s half the game), much better passer, rebounder, finisher, ability to lead his team to the playoffs, intangibles, rebounding, and the ability to make his teammates. It’s literally everything besides being able to shoot and handle better.
John Wall literally makes his teammates better. Look at Trevor Ariza 3 point percentage before he played with John Wall. You can go around with Bradley Beal, Martell Webster, Rusual Butler, Drew Gooden, and some more that I can’t at the top of my head. And look at the field goal percentage at some of the players he played before they came and play for the Wizards to when they played with the Wizards. This is the most underrated trait that John Wall game and the impact he brings to the Wizards top 7 ranked defense in the league. Last year the Wizards had like the number 2 ranked defense when John Wall on the court vs. the 24th ranked defense in the league when off the court.
I believe John Wall is the 4th best point guard, behind Russell Westbrook, Steph Curry, and Chris Paul and he’s a top 13-15 player in the league. But, if you see what the national media speak of him you wouldn’t believe so.

ZouldiersParticipantI agree that John Wall is the 4th best PG in the league and pretty much agree with what you said about him. The only reason why people underrate him is that he does not have a consistent 3pt shot and that’s about it.

SubZeroParticipantTotally agree. I’ve been saying everything you said for at least a year, but then again he’s my favorite player, so it’s not too surprising. The only time the media really gives him credit is when he pulls a 360 layup, but never when he gets 15 assists. He’s easily the 4th best PG in the league right now, and it’s only a matter of time before Paul starts getting old and Wall overtakes him. I think if you actually watched the series against the Hawks, you would truly understand his worth. He played with a fractured hand and still dominated. If he was healthy the whole series, they knock off the Hawks and meet the Cavs in the ECF

Memphis MadnessParticipantHe’s somewhere between 8-10 in my preseason NBA MVP power poll.
He is somewhere below AD, LeBron, Russ, CP3, Steph, and Harden. He and Marc, Cousins, Kawhi Leonard, Blake, and Lillard are in that range from 7-15.
My top five as of today for next year’s MVP is Westbrook, Curry, LeBron, James Harden, and Anthony Davis. CP3 is just outside my top 5 at number 6.
John Wall is at a disadvantage since the point guard position is the deepest and it is also TOP HEAVY with 3 or 4 MVP candidates.
Also, the Wizards are good, but not ELITE.
I think last year Russell Westbrook really broke out. We knew he was a superstar, but we didn’t know if he could carry a solid team all by himself (well he did). Russ also made the leap into being a TOP THREE guy. Few players were individually impressive or exerted their will as much as Westbrook did last year. He was up there with Steph Curry, LeBron, and Anthony Davis.
I think John Wall can do that this season. He has all the attributes. The skill set is there. The rest is intangibles and maturity. He SHOULD be peaking right about now…

Greek-BallerI think Kyrie is a better finisher to be honest, or it’s really close

HitsterParticipantJohn Wall IMO is a legit contender to be in the top 5 NBA PG’s. I agree that we cannot really put him in front of CP3, Steph Curry and Russell WEstbrook. But he is definitely in the mix or maybe ahead of the likes of Lillard, Irving etc and he has performed at a higher level slightly longer than them.
A fit and on form D-Rose would rank with the top 3 ahead of Wall but there isn’t any reason why should not challenge to get into the top 3, he has only just turned 25 and PG’s often don’t reach their peak until they are nearer 30.

Andrew1984ParticipantJohn Wall is nowhere the shooter that Kyrie Irving is, period. For his career, Wall goes 43-30-79 compared to Kyrie’s 45-39-86. It’s really not even close.
Wall is more durable and racks up a lot more assists, but he also finished first or second in the league in turnovers in three of the last four years.
I’m not saying Kyrie is far-and-away better than Wall, but I also don’t think Wall is far-and-away better than Kyrie. It’s pretty obvious that it’s close.

NBAjunkie81ParticipantHe is a real leader & he is just entering his prime…. The Wizards have a very nice young squad & if they can sign a top free agent to play w/ Wall & Beale they could challenge for one of the Eastern Conference’s top spots in a few years…

GBeeParticipantI actually think he’s overrated. Nobody dominates the ball like he does and that’s a fact. Not even Durant-less Westbrook enjoyed more time on the ball than Wall did. Yeah he gets his assists but I think he plays with the ball too much, turning his teammates into bystanders waiting for bail out passes as Wall backs the ball back out and calls a typical 1-4 set. It gets even worse at the end of games when he gets into hero mode, stalling the offense as a whole as he dribbles, dribbles, dribbles looking to take on the opposing defense himself. Pop in tape from last year and you’ll see just how bad the Wiz’ offense was in tight, end game situations where their offensive efficiency plummeted and Wall was actually a net negative (-12.4 net48 to be exact). He’s good but the ball can’t always be in his hands. That just makes team offense too predictable and easier to defend.

PulseGlazerParticipantWall is a great player, but a step below elite. I don’t think it’s the outside shot holding him back, but there is something. He’d benefit more than almost anyone from playing with even a B+ big and it’s a damn sin that the Wizards haven’t found one to pair with him.
