OhCanada-ParticipantIs it just me or is Henson just too talented to be buried on the bench on a young Milwaukee team. I expected him to win out the starting position and post huge numbers this year. Does anybody know where a good spot for him would be.
Id like to see him in Boston somehow. I think he would complement Sullinger and Olynyk quite well. He could also be a good target for Rondo and Smart as a quicker option then Olynyk and Sullinger.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantWouldn’t make sense to keep him down if you are Coach Kidd…
Maybe he’s not that great yet???
I’d like to see him in Philadelphia next to Noel and Joel, I’d like to build the longest frontline possible, blocks leading to breaks and all that…

OllstarParticipantLong North Carolina guys seem to do well in Dallas, could revitalize his career like Brandan Wright did a few years ago.

MattP31ParticipantI like this kid but think some over rate him. His length and athleticism make him productive in spurts, but his lack of strength would be exploited inside over 30 MPG.

HitsterParticipantSince Larry Sanders returned to fitness, John Henson seems to have gone down the pecking order a bit and with Zara Pachulia also looking for minutes Henson’s playing time seems to have been a bit limited. I wonder if Jason Kidd sees Henson more as a C so won’t use him as PF alongside Sanders.
The Bucks have been using Khris Middleton and Ersan Ilyasova as their main PFs and have chosen to use Jared Dudley as starting SG so it means that Giannis, Henson and OJ Mayo are all bench players.
We know that Kidd is a fan of Sanders and we assume that Giannis gets a starting role in due course so Kidd has to decide where best to use the Greek Freak and Jabari Parker. There has been talk of Giannis playing anywhere form 1 to 4, more realistically it will be between 2 and 4 plus Parker might be considered a PF in due course.
If Kidd did look to use Giannis or more likely Parker at 4 then I do wonder where Henson might fit in. He’d see good minutes from the bench and his length makes him a great defensive option. So I don’t see the Bucks rushing to trade him unless they got a great offer. A lot could depend where the land in the draft next year and who they take.
Henson would be a nice fit at Boston and compliment Sullinger and Olynk nicely plus their backcourt would feed him some nice dunks, put backs etc.
Another team that sprang to mind was Utah, could he fill the perimeter defensive need they have. He’d have Favours guarding the basket behind him so would not have to play inside so much and his length would be a huge asset on the perimeter.

B-ball fanParticipantHenson just is in a tough spot because he is not yet as good a player as his stats make him look. While he is an excellent shot blocker, he struggles against physicality, hence his being benched immediately against Detroit after Drummond came in and scored on him, and he lacks court awareness on defense. Sanders has been terrible on offense for the Bucks this season, but his defense is absolutely incredible, so it is hard for Henson to earn minutes over him.
Plus, the Bucks have finally figured out how to use Giannis over the past three games and it involves playing him a lot at PF. Giannis is not yet a natural moving without the ball as a wing, so he is best when he is involved as a screener and is forced to do things off-the-ball to make the defense pay attention to him. And, while he is lean, he is gaining muscle really quickly and he probably has the longest reach of any PF in the league (he is noticably taller than Larry Sanders). Giannis has shown serious ability to blow up PnRs and in this game the Pistons offense ground to a halt when he entered the game late in the 1st quarter – not just because of him, but his active defense played a big part.
So backup PF minutes are out for Henson because Giannis has been doing so well with the Bucks’ 2nd unit and starting center minutes are out. That just leaves him some backup Center minutes and he only gets those against good matchups. The Bucks have had struggles passing the ball, which were partially alleviated tonight by benching Khris Middleton, who has been a ball stopper this season, in favor of Kendall Marshall, but they still count on Zaza for passing. Benching him would be a problem and his passing and physicality makes him a good complement for Giannis. So Henson can’t even earn all the backup center minutes.
Henson really would be better off with a change of scenery, but he is more flawed than he looks on paper. His lefty hook is great, but he has no effective counter moves and he isn’t a good passer in the post. Plus, his lack of focus on the court can’t endear him to the coaching staff. It is kinda too bad he doesn’t fit with the Bucks, as he still has good chemistry with Kendall Marshall on the court, which they showed off in the preseason.

OhCanada-ParticipantGreat post thats exactly what I was wondering. I have Henson on both of my Fantasy Teams I was really banking on him being a core developmental piece for Milwaukee. Id hate to drop him because with an injury in Milwaukee he could end up being extremely valuable in fantasy terms or if hes traded to the right place.

HitsterParticipantVery good insight by B-Ball fan, I haven’t really seen much of the Bucks this season and obviously Jason Kidd is figuring out how best to use his line up and needs to find the best way to fit the pieces together. I’d be interested to know how much dual court time Jabari and the Greek Freak are seeing together or are they used in seperate units. There was a lot of hype on here about them being a great future duo in tandem once it was decided who plays which role.
The Bucks are probably already looking a lot better than they were last year with Jabari now in situ and Knight scoring well. I think that Jason Kidd is still figuring his rotations out and may use a "horses for courses" type line up depending on who the opposition are.
Back to John Henson, I wonder if his lack of bulk might ultimately hold him back a bit, he is 24 next month so if he isn’t bulking up by now, will he ever. He might be the sort of tall skinny guy who can never really bulk up too much, the Bucks would have trainers, dieticians etc so if they cannot bulk him up who can.
Good also to know that the Greek Freak is getting even bigger – one of the longest PF reaches in the NBA as B-ball fan points out. You just wonder how much of a monster this guy could become.

B-ball fanParticipantThe Bucks were staggering Jabari’s and Giannis’s minutes early in the season, but they have started playing them together. They actually combined to score 10 consecutive Bucks’ points late in the 4th quarter last night, before Detroit pulled away. They may be great complements long term because both are combo forwards whe can cross match well. Parker has struggled early this season, but his talent is obvious once he develops a little more patience and trust in his game.
When they played together rather briefly in the preseason, Giannis mostly played SF and Parker played PF except when Ersan was in the game. But these past three games, Giannis has had his position basically switched to PF and he has had his three best games of the season and perhaps the best three game stretch of his career, not just because of the stats he is putting up but because of him actually consistently playing good team basketball. Against Chicago, Giannis was at PF when he and Parker shared the court and I think that mostly continued against Detroit, although Detroit crossmatched on defense and put Butler on Giannis and Smith on Parker in the 4th.

HitsterParticipantThanks for the extra feedback B-Ball fan.
The Bucks would get a lot of interest for Henson given his defensive ability and the fact he still has two years left on his rookie deal. Contending teams could fit him into their cap and would worry about the 2nd contract when that comes around.
Ersan would also be a good rotational fit for a few teams but his trade value will be much higher next year when he is in the final year before an $8.4 million team option in 2016-17. I’d guess that John Hammond may try to package the two of them.

HitsterParticipantWright and Henson are a bit similar in my mind, the Cavs would be a decent fit but with K-Love, Thompson and Wild Thing would he see many minutes especially as Marion can also play PF.
One other team that did spring to mind is Atlanta, he’d be a different sort of big to Millsap, Horford, Brand etc.
