 Why would you not take Embiid with the first pick?  This guy has franchise center potential.  Unless there’s a wing or a guard with Kobe/MJ/LeBron James type of talent, then take the guy who can be a dominant big.

For every Andrew Bynum and Andre Drummond, there is a Greg Oden, Daniel Orton, Hasheem Thabeet, BJ Mullens, Alexis Ajinca and so on.

 Except Embiid is very different from most of those guys you mentioned.  Oden was extremely promising in his two years playing in the league, the injuries did him in.  He contradicts your argument.  Orton didn’t even get court time in college.  Thabeet and Mullens were clearly an inferior player to Embiid.  

There are busts at every position.  Maybe Wiggins is the next Wesley Johnson.  Maybe Randle is the next Michael Beasley.  Maybe Exum is the next Shaun Livingston.  You can’t just right off Embiid because some people label him a raw big.  

Embiid may be "raw," but it isn’t like he is just a potential pick.  He has already shown an effective skill level and an ability to be productive in college.  By the end of the season, he could easily be the #1 pick if he ups his production.  We don’t know if he will, but he could easily have enough production to be the first pick.

I would argue that, for his age, Embiid is relatively advanced in terms of skill level and feel for the game, regardless of how little experience he has.  Alex Len and Meyers Leonard never showed the understanding of defensive rotations in college that Embiid does.  Embiid’s footwork in the post is also superior to any of the center prospects taken in recent years.  His court vision is certainly among the best of the first round center prospects of the past 5 years.  He certainly still has a lot of improving to do, but he is a lower floor prospect than the vast majority of the centers taken in recent years.

Right now, I think Wiggins and Parker are the two top tier prospects, with Embiid in a tier below.  But if Embiid can consistently score in double figures and develop as a player as the season progresses, I would have no problem changing my mind (based on his performance).
