TarHeelRavenParticipantMVP of the ACC tournament and has been the second best player all season to Brice Johnson. He was the only Tar Heel to knock down a three pointer last night, going 3-3 as Carolina continues to struggle mightily from beyond the arc. He came in as the third best point guard in his class beyond Tyus Jones and Emmanuel Mudiay. I have spoken all season about how I thought Carolina plays soft, but Berry has been tough as nails. He can shoot, pass, penetrate, he’s strong and a really good defender. He has played with a swagger allseason that Carolina has desperatley needed since Paige has been in a shooting slump all season. Next year I believe he could be one of the best point guards in the country.

ChewyParticipantI agree he adds a toughness that UNC has desperately needed. Roy LOOOOVES his skilled but soft players. You have to have a few bulldogs mixed in, in order to be successful. I’m not big on comparisons, but he reminds me of Jarret Jack. Some streaky shooting, but so solid in every other facet of the PG game.
I’m excited to see what he can do with Paige gone and major minutes as a full time PG. I think 16 ppg, 6 ast, 4 rebs, 1.5 stl and 2.0 tournovers. So, an extra 2 buckets a game and double his assist numbers seems relaistic to me.
Side note: UNC fans, do you guys have any shooters in your recruiting class? Or is your team going to be terrible 3 point shooting team again?

TarHeelRavenParticipantBrandon Robinson. I think he’s ranked in the 60’s. He’s not a one and done obviously, but I don’t know what his role will be next year, but I thinnk by his junior year, he could be one of those knockdown shooter guys Carolina desperatley needs. Seventh Woods is an elite athlete, but not seen as an outside shooter. Of course Carolina’s shooting woes have been well documented. I believe Joel Berry will be Carolina’s best three point shooter by far next year. Theo Pinson will improve his shooting with another offseason of work, but he’s not a natural long range bomber. Justin Jackson has been the most puzzling outside shooter I have ever seen. He has a good stroke, but just doesn’t make any. He was considered a first round pick before this season, but I think he returns next year. Kenny Williams was a fringe 100 guy who originally committed to VCU before Shaka left for Texas and was considered one of the top shooters in the class. He made one three all year in limited minutes. Carolina has been starving for an elite outside shooting recruit for the past 6-7 years. PJ Hairston could’ve been one but he ruined his Carolina career with off the court issues. I’m still waiting for Roy to real in a top 20 guy who is an elite shooter. Carolina is absolutely starving for one.

ncballerAnyone know a website where I can get Joel Berry’s catch and shoot 3 point percentage? It’s got to be off the charts. When he gets his feet set, he is dangerous from 3. I think he and Isaiah Hicks will take huge jumps to be a great tandom next season. In regards to Berry’s future, would like to see him attack the basket more and show off his mid range game which was really tough to guard in AAU. Harder for him to get it off over bigger defenders in college. Would also like to see him improve court vision. There was one pick and roll last night where he had Hicks completely open and instead took a tough runner over Tobey or Nolte which went in. Had it not gone in, would’ve pissed me off haha.
In regards to future shooters, Brandon Robinson shot 44% from 3 on 6 attempts per game this season. His competition was slightly above average. Need him to put on more weight to get more consistent playing time. He is a lockdown defender and can be a really good 3 and D guy.
Woods is streaky. His outside shot has been scrutinized but his mechanics are not bad at all. He isn’t releasing the ball behind his head like Strickland. Just needs to develop more confidence from beyond the arch. Saw him hit 8 threes while being guarded by Dennis Smith.
Kenny Williams is intriguing. My guys in Chapel Hill say he is completely lights out in practice and plays with swagger in practice, but is timid in the games. However against Pitt and Virginia he looked like he finally belonged out there. He played OUTSTANDING defense as well. Made Brogdon go 0-2 and denied him the ball several times in his 6 minute stint out there. I think he makes a huge jump next season and can be a mini Bullock lite player.

D7H7NParticipantReminds me Jonny Flynn. Doesn’t have Jonny’s vertical though I don’t think. Berry’s going to be a monster off the pick and roll with Hicks next year.

airenn34ParticipantWe are really fortunate that we got Joel Berry. I keep saying this guy must be special if he was a 3 time Mr. Basketball. I was expecting him to be playing like this from the start of his freshman season but that was unfair and sometimes we forget that not every fresh can make an impact. Regardless this is what I was expecting and knewwe would eventually get out of Joel. He can do so much more if Roy really unleashes him. His jumper is money and when he drives to the lane and uses his strong compact body he gets a lot of and ones. He’s really solid in all facets without any flash. He’s got great demeanor and high character. Maybe things that he can improve upon are playmaking. I cant even think of anyone he reminds me of. Maybe Terrell Brandon or a more athletic version of Mateen Cleaves.
As far as shooters. I wanna see next years version of Kenny Williams. He’s got a nice frame, he’s active on defense and we all know his reputation of being a knockdown shooter. Hopefully he doesnt get discouraged if he falls in the depth chart. Sevenths shooting form doesnt look bad so I expect Hubert to develop him well. Brandon Robinson is rail thin. They said he’s a knockdown shooter but they said the same about Justin Jackson so I dont know till I see him at the Hill. Im thinking Marcus Ginyard 2.0 with him.

ncballerI like the Flynn comparison for Berry! I think Berry can be in the 16-18 ppg category next season as well and maybe looking at a late first selection.
airenn, I really hope that Robinson is not another Ginyard. We need him to be more especially if recruiting keeps trending the way it is. Though looking at the way they move, it’s easy to make that comparison. I would classify Robinson as a more dynamic athlete with better jumpshot and a 6’10" wingspan. Ginyard was never known for shooting.
I do think Williams will end up being somewhere inbetween McDonald and Bullock. He has a relentless work ethic as well, so I am sure the light will come on soon.

airenn34ParticipantYou are right! My Ginyard comparison is horrible. Brandon looks to have more offensive capabilties. Lets go with shorter Reyshawn Terry.

TarHeelRavenParticipantKenny Williams has a great opportunity to play meaningful minutes next year. He should basically lock himself in the gym this summer. He’s already a really good defender and is very quick and a very good athlete. He just needs reps and confidence.
